WHO ARE THE COUNSELORS?
qIt is important to realize that the role of the school counselor is to help your child to make decisions that will affect his/her future.
qYour role is to be involved and supportive but to allow some room for growth.
qChildren should start to form self-advocacy and independent thinking skills. Please encourage your child to make contact with his/her counselor, if a need arises. The better we get to know your child, the better we can assist him/her throughout high school.
qAdditional resources: Learning Lab, Peer Tutoring with NHS Students, and Naviance – a web based college/career learning platform.
TRANSITION FROM MIDDLE TO HIGH SCHOOL
q You should think of the school counselors as a resource.
q Counselors are responsible for providing many services some of which include:§ Maintenance of Student Records§ Career Education§ College Planning and Application Preparation§ Course Registration and Academic Planning§ Academic Resources§ Guidance Information Nights for Parents§ Standardized Test Administration§ Special Education Support§ Short-term Counseling§ Career Readiness
ROLE OF SCHOOL COUNSELING OFFICE?
q If you have concerns about your child’s performance in multiple subjects or you feel the school should be aware of any special circumstances, use the school counselor as a reference point.
q If you have concerns about a particular class, contact the teacher directly.
q Questions about your student’s IEP should be directed to the student’s case manager first and then, if necessary, your child’s counselor.
q Grades, attendance and discipline information is available through Power School Parent Portal
WHO SHOULD I CALL TO CHECK ON MY CHILD?
q Don’t wait.q As soon as you have a concern, please call
or email the appropriate teacher, school counselor, or grade level principal.
q It is easier to address a concern early on.q If teams and/or counselors identify issues
sooner, we may contact you.
WHEN SHOULD I MAKE THE CALL?
Go to the school website (www.eastpennsd.org/ehs):q Use the personnel directory on the site. You can email
every teacher, school counselor, and grade level principal directly from the site. In most instances, you will be contacted within 48 hours of your initial contact.
