What stands out to you?

15/21 or 71% of them are born within the first three months of the year.

The Matthew Effect

It is those who are successful that will be given special opportunities that lead to further success.

Sociologist say success comes from “accumulative advantage”o The cut off date for playing international

soccer is January 1…the best day to by born to play soccer. These kids can be a full 12 months older then some of the kids they are playing against.

Page 5: Welcome class of 2019!!! Administrators Dr. Michael Schumacher– PrincipalDr. Michael Schumacher– Principal Mr. Jason Malaschak– Asst. PrincipalMr. Jason

Why does this phenomenon happen?

More developmentally advanced because of their age.

Chosen for elite/select teams/programs.• They get better coaching/teaching.

• They get more practice time.• They play more games…against better

competition.• Overall they have more “contact” time

in the activity. (10,000 hour rule)

Page 6: Welcome class of 2019!!! Administrators Dr. Michael Schumacher– PrincipalDr. Michael Schumacher– Principal Mr. Jason Malaschak– Asst. PrincipalMr. Jason

So What?

Personalized student learning• Your child will be one of about 600 students

at PHS• It’s our job to personalize their learning…to

ensure they get what they need – “fair isn’t equal”

• Every Child at PHS will have opportunities for success; independent of what accumulative advantages they have or do not have
