Sociologist say success comes from “accumulative advantage”o The cut off date for playing international

soccer is January 1…the best day to by born to play soccer. These kids can be a full 12 months older then some of the kids they are playing against.

Why does this phenomenon happen?

More developmentally advanced because of their age.

Chosen for elite/select teams/programs.• They get better coaching/teaching.

• They get more practice time.• They play more games…against better

competition.• Overall they have more “contact” time

in the activity. (10,000 hour rule)

• KSHSAA (state) rule– Must pass 5 classes in the previous semester

in order to participate in extra-curricular events.

– Must be enrolled in 5 new classes each semester of participation.

• PHS rule– Eligibility reports are pulled every other

week and students must be passing all classes to participate.
