Rotarians also recognize the importance of education as a key component in breaking the cycle of poverty. In 2009/10 the Rotary club of London Hyde Park joined over 300 Canadian Rotary clubs, in building a school in Afghanistan for up to 4,000 girls and boys. Since it opened in September 2010 the school has become one of the best in the country and currently has 1,560 girls and 1,950 boys enrolled for the 2014/15 school year.

Rotarians recognize play is essential to development because it contributes to the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of children and youth. In 2014 the Rotary club of London Hyde Park partnered with the City of London to install new playground equipment in Nor’West Optimist park located in North West London. The new playground was dedicated on June 26, 2014 (the last day of school) with a free community barbecue. It is estimated over 300 families attended. The club is currently organizing a second community barbecue for June 25, 2015 at the same location.

In 2016 Our club purchased an automated external defibrillator (AED) for Sir Frederick Banting High School in Northwest London. An AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient, and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.

It is estimated 300 members of the community attended the free event, many of them students from Emily Carr Elementary School.

On October 16, 2015, 90 members of the community braved a dark and foggy morning to attend the Rotary club of London Hyde Park's "Meet the Mayoral Candidates" event at West Haven Golf and Country club. They were treated to 10 of the candidates speaking about their platform and vision for London.

What We Do! Community Engagement

This annual community engagement event was implemented to introduce the local business community to its local Rotary club while also providing a valuable service by bringing the mayor back to his constituents. There were just over 40 members and guests at this year’s breakfast, which was close to the same number as last year. Considering the challenging year the Mayor of London has had so far, this was a good turnout. He focused his presentation on the accomplishments of himself and council with the first multi-year budget in the city’s history and the approval of the London plan that will help London develop for the 21st century. He also spoke of this council’s focus on tackling poverty that inflicts 17% of Londoners with the March 2016 publication of the “publishing of the London for All: A Roadmap to End Poverty report.

What We Do! Community Engagement

On Saturday, January 31, 2015, the Rotaracters and Rotarians joined together for the 13th. annual Day of Giving whereby teams of 3 or 4 will visit elderly, disabled, and individuals who need a few light chores done. Washing windows; cleaning kitchens and bathrooms; are just a few tasks that are easy for the young and healthy but challenging for those who are not. The appreciation we received from those we helped and the camaraderie of our team was a wonderful reward. Overall, the volunteers helped 60 clients around London, and made their day a little bit happier.

The Rotary Club of London Hyde Park once again staffed the Salvation Army Kettle at Remark Fresh Market on Saturday November 26th and December 3rd 2016. Each member was invited to sign-up for a two hour shift and it was so popular that not every member had the opportunity to participate. The picture to the left is of members Michael Wibbing and one of our new members, Carl Silke. All funds raised through this annual campaign in London will be used in the London area; so residents who contribute can rest assured those in need in our own community will benefit. In 2015, 5,600 households in London received Christmas hampers.
