o Started functioning with headquarters at Guwahati with effect from 11th January 1982

Main objective:Planning and integrated implementation of measures for control of flood and bank erosion in the Brahmaputra Valley and for matters connected therewith in association with concerned states 2

Jurisdiction

The jurisdiction of the Board includes the States of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura and Northern part of West Bengal falling in Brahmaputra Basin

Major Functions

B) Anti-erosion Schemes Under Execution

(ii) Avulsion of Brahmaputra at Dholla-Hatighuli

Migration of Dibang and Lohit River forming Multi-channel created threat to Dholla-Hatighuli area as well as to Saikhowa Reserve Forest in Tinsukia and Dibrugarh District of Assam

On approval of Ministry of Water Resources this scheme has been taken up in Phases

B) Anti-erosion Schemes Under Execution

• On account of avulsion, apart from loss of huge commercial land, 49 villages and 48000 inhabitants got severely affected

• Out of above, 11 villages and about 2400 ha of land got protected so far

• A large number of farmers deserted earlier on account of avulsion returned back for farming

• Total expenditure of ` 71.23 crore has occurred on implementation of the scheme

• West Bengal Government entrusted the Brahmaputra Board to execute the following schemes-

Anti-erosion measures in Bhajaner Charra area in Cooch Behar, W. Bengal

Bank Protection work in Bhogdebri area, Cooch Behar, W. Bengal

Administrative Approval, Expenditure Sanction and allocation of additional fund is required for execution of the schemes

Water Resources Department, Government of Assam framed one proposal amounting to ` 336.76 crore for protection of North bank of Majuli Island along Subansiri River and Kherkatia Suti

A Comprehensive Proposal amounting to ` 929.08 crore including both the proposals of WRD, Assam and Majuli Phase-IV with certain additional works has been submitted to MoWR,RD&GR
