The Sixth Sunday of Easter May 17, 2020

The people of Samaria came to worship the Lord and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

It is the same Spirit that leads us into the truth.

In the body, Jesus was put to death; in the Spirit He was raised to life.

We are called to this same glory. Next Week’s Readings

Prayer for Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Restarting Masses: A Letter from Fr. Ron Recently, our own Archbishop, His Excellency Alexander Sample has released, to the priests of the Archdiocese of Portland, his plan for the limited re-opening of Masses in accord with the current restrictions put forth by Gov. Brown. He emphasized some points, and I want to emphasize them as well.

• The obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation will continue to be dispensed. If you don’t feel comfortable returning to Mass yet, that is OK. • Masses will continue to be live streamed from St. Mary Catholic Church. • In accordance with Governor Brown’s executive orders, the number of people at a Mass cannot exceed 25. This includes the celebrant, essential ministers, cantors, musicians and anyone present. • Appropriate social/physical distancing (minimum of 6 feet) and adequate cleaning of the church after each use will be maintained. We will do what we can to ensure a clean environment, but know that you are coming at your own risk. I cannot guarantee the health of anyone, I can only guarantee that we will be vigilant about cleaning and maintaining the proper directives about social/physical distancing, etc. • Those who are at all sick must not come to Mass, and those in vulnerable, at-risk populations are urged not to come to Mass.

We will provide a way for you to sign up for Mass on our website for attendance at a public Mass. Please note that this list of people will be on a rotating schedule, so you may get a daily Mass or a weekend Mass. Our goal is to give people the opportunity to receive our Lord at some point during the week or month depending on the length of the list. The procedure for getting onto the list to attend Mass is on the website. One can also call the parish office at 541-342-1139 to get on the list. Or one can email the office at [email protected]. Please note that you will need to be on the list in order to get into the Mass. We will need a phone number and first and last name of each person who is coming to the Mass. Families do not count as one person, each individual member of the family will need to be on the list individually. If you have five members in your family then they take up five of the available 25 people that are allowed to come to the Mass. I will try to maintain the Mass time of 12:15pm for funeral Masses on Thursdays, trying to refrain from scheduling parishioners during that Mass time in case there is funeral, otherwise those who were scheduled would need to be bumped in favor of the family members attending the funeral. Please only sign up for Mass at one parish. Do not sign up to attend Mass at St. Alice, and St. Mary, and St. Thomas, and St. Peter, and St. Mark. No, do not do it. Be charitable and allow others their opportunity to attend Mass. What are we doing to ensure your health? One entrance will be used for allowing people into Mass. We will have someone at the door to check if you are on the list in order to ensure the maximum capacity of 25. Remember no walk-ins are allowed… only people on the list. Those attending Mass are encouraged to wear a mask. Pews will be assigned to maintain the physical distancing. We have taped off some of the pews in order to maintain the physical distancing. Masses will probably shorter in order to minimize the length of possible exposure. Once again, I urge you, if you have any symptoms of sickness, stay home! All books or cards or bulletins in the Church have been removed. The pew cushions and Holy Water fonts have been removed. Anything that could be a vector for transmission of contagion has been removed from the Church. For your protection, our priests will wear a mask during the distribution of Holy Communion, and he will purify his hands before the distribution of Holy Communion. Only the Precious body of our Lord will be distributed during Holy Communion. And the floor is marked in order to maintain the physical distancing. During the consecration the Sacred Hosts to be distributed will be covered in the ciborium to ensure that the Sacred Hosts have not been breathed on by the celebrating priest. Between each Mass the pews, and restrooms, and door knobs and handles, push plates, will be cleaned. We will keep a record of all in attendance at Mass, so that in the unfortunate event that someone that had attended a Mass becomes sick, that person could let us know, and we would know all those that had been present, and they could be notified of the potential exposure. Please know that we care about you, we love you, and all of this is in place to ensure your well-being safety. I look forward to seeing you at Mass. Welcome back, and please be patient as we deal with all of these challenges and restrictions together. In Christ, Fr. Ron Nelson.

Words of blessing from Pope Francis

“The Virgin Mary teaches us what it means to live in the Holy Spirit and what it means to accept the news of God in our lives. She conceived Jesus by the work of the Holy Spirit, and every Christian, each one of us, is called to accept the Word of God, to accept Jesus inside of us, and then to bring Him to everyone. Mary invoked the Holy Spirit with the apostles in the upper room; we, too, every time we come together in prayer, are sustained by the presence of the Mother of Jesus in order to receive the gift of the Spirit and to have the strength to witness to Jesus risen…. May Mary help you to be attentive to what the Lord asks of you and to live and walk forever with the Holy Spirit.”

--Address, April 28, 2013

May is the month of

Mary, Mother of the Church.

Consecration of Skyla Chamard Sunday, May 24

It was announced last December that one of our parishioners, Skyla Chamard, will be consecrated as a consecrated virgin living in the world, along with Miriam Marston, at the Archdiocese. Fr. Ron wrote: “You will probably recognize Skyla as the dedicated volunteer who takes care of the candles in the church. This will indeed be a happy day for our parish. What is a consecrated virgin? The consecration of a virgin is one of the oldest sacramentals in the Church, and one of the fruits of the Second Vatican Council was to restore this profound blessing on virgins living in the world. A consecrated virgin is a woman who desires to live in the world, but to be betrothed mystically to Christ and to be dedicated to the service of the Church. Her life is one of perpetual virginity for the sake of Christ and His kingdom. There is a special rite of consecration performed by the Archbishop, after which she enters a public state of consecrated life in the Church. She lives her life individually, under the direction of the diocesan Bishop. There is no particular service or spirituality that is imposed, but in addition to her regular work, her time is spent in works of penance and mercy, in apostolic activity, and in prayer, in accord with the state of her life and spiritual gifts. She remains in the secular state, providing for her own material needs. She will not wear a habit or use the name sister, but she will wear a ring as sign of her betrothal to Christ, living a simple lifestyle and the evangelical councils. It is a subtle yet public and powerful witness. After her consecration, Skyla will continue to live her witness among us which I am sure will be a blessing for our parish. We are so happy for Skyla as she moves toward this important step. Let us support her with our prayers.” Skyla says, “The ceremony will be small and private. I'm disappointed all you, my friends, will not be there physically, but I hope you will be there with me virtually and spiritually. You will be in my heart. It's a great honor to be consecrated. I've had some people ask if I will move or change jobs. My reply is, not that I'm planning on. I'm so grateful for all who helped and supported me in this journey. Please, know I'm praying for you and continue to pray for me. I must admit, I will miss having my Saint Mary's family with me. You all have been such a support for me throughout the years.” The consecration Mass will be celebrated by Archbishop Sample on Sunday, May 24th, 2020, at 11:00 am, at the Cathedral in Portland. All are welcome to join the live stream through the link Watch Live Masses at the Archdiocese website www.archdpdx.org.

Mary, Health of the sick

O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith. You, Salvation of the People, know what we need. We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

IDEAS FOR GIVING IN 2020 Congress recently enacted several tax law changes. These resources may help you with your tax planning and offer some ideas for you to consider if you are thinking about making a gift in support of our mission during this time. These changes include:

CARES ACT – allows those who do not itemize on their tax returns, be allowed a charitable donation of up to $300 to reduce their tax liability.

Donor Advised Funds – allows a gift from DAF without affecting your personal financial security.

Charitable Gift Annuity – allows a donation of stock, CD, or cash for guaranteed lifetime fixed payments. You do not pay capital gains when you fund this annuity

Restricted Gifts – If you have made a gift to support a particular project or purpose, removing the restriction will help us meet our current, most pressing needs, including supporting staff and overhead expenses.

SECURE Act – limits stretch payments to IRA beneficiaries to 10 years and heirs pay higher taxes on inheritance. Consider funding a testamentary charitable remainder unitrust with your IRA balance.

If you are interested in learning more about any of these ideas, please contact the Parish Office at 541-342-1139 or at www.stmaryeugenecom.
