The Seventh Sunday of Easter ~ The Ascension of the Lord May 24, 2020

Jesus, having completed the work of His Father, speaks of returning to Him and of being glorified.

As we share in His glory, so too do we share in Christ’s suffering.

We have nothing to fear, however, since the Lord is our refuge.

In His name do we gather, attentive to the Spirit. Next Week’s Readings

A pair of ducks found their way to the same little corner of the property year after year. Sheltered by a little grove of trees, they quickly made their preparations to build a nest, lay eggs, and welcome in a new family. Then one year, only one of the ducks came to that little corner. She went about the business of building a nest, but this time, she was clearly unsettled. She would wander around, sometimes seemingly without purpose, almost hoping perhaps that her mate might come along. But, she remained alone. There were many times when we could hear her “crying”, mourning her loneliness and lack of purpose, sitting on a batch of eggs that would never hatch. One day, she quietly left that little corner never to return again.

Many human beings approach life this way. We silently grieve our loneliness, lack of direction, and sense of purpose. Maybe life once had meaning for us, but nothing seems to claim us and settle our restlessness any longer. We wander around looking and hoping for someone or something to come our way. We may even sob at times, wailing as we sit with the misery of our pain. Will happiness ever come our way again? Or will we simply leave where we are never to return again? Many are lost, wandering souls who are not quite sure where to settle or where to make a home.

We are meant to be in Christ. This glorious feast of the Ascension shows us, with clear vision, who Jesus really is! Understanding ourselves in Christ really changes things up and reorients us to our greater purpose, mission, and meaning. We are part of the cosmic wonder of creation and part of a bigger plan and mystery, destined to be much more than what we now know ourselves to be. Could Jesus’ friends know who he would become? If we can find the Christ present within and see the Christ bursting forth in all creation and beyond, then we can come to know our truth and understand where our home and life is meant to be.

Advancing upon the blessing of each new day with the certain knowledge that you are an unconditionally loved child of God gives you the axis and the safe harbor to cope with whatever comes your way. The gift of joy will be yours, and you can discover your true meaning and purpose. Look within, look without, look above, and look below. You are not alone. Trust that God will lead you where you need to be and transform you into who you really are.

May is the month of

Mary, Mother of the Church.

The Intentional Rosary The Intentional Rosary, as described by Gus Lloyd, Sirius XM host of “Seize the Day!”

For each Hail, Mary that I pray with the mysteries (50 in all), I offer up a specific intention.

When I first started this, I thought, “I can’t think of 50 intentions! This will never work!” Boy was I wrong. Every time I do this, I run out of beads before I run out of prayers. I want to encourage you to try it. Here are some hints for you. First, pray for each member of your family – parents & grandparents (even if deceased), siblings, children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, even cousins. Then, pray for your friends, co-workers, people you serve in ministry with, even casual acquaintances. Then pray for the clergy – your priest, bishop, deacons, sisters and brothers and, of course, the Holy Father. If you still have beads, go back and recall friends from your past, even if you haven’t seen them in years. At this point, you’ll run out of beads. If needed, write down your intentions before you start praying your Intentional Rosary. As you practice this devotion, you’ll find that the Holy Spirit will call to mind people to pray for. Enjoy!

Prayer for Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Prayer to our Lady, Help of Christians

O heavenly Lady, help of Christians, I come to you, for you never refuse help to anyone. Mary, help of Christians, you have often answered the prayers of nations. You have helped the Pope, bishops, priests, religious, all Christians. Whenever those who love you put their hope in you, you hurry to them with your mother’s love. Your greatest wish is to help the holy Church of your Son still here on earth.

My mother, my hope, O Lady, help of Christians, make me love in the love of your holy Son, Jesus Christ. Help me in my every need.

Consecration of Skyla Chamard

On May 24, Skyla Chamard and Miriam Marston will receive the Rite of Consecration of a Virgin living in the World, at the hands of Archbishop Sample at the Cathedral. All are welcome to tune in to the 11:00 am Mass on the Archdiocesan Facebook page, or Vimeo channel: https://vimeo.com/event/49424. Please keep them in your prayers, and pray for all those who are discerning vocations at this time.

IDEAS FOR GIVING IN 2020 Congress recently enacted several tax law changes. These resources may help you with your tax planning and offer some ideas for you to consider if you are thinking about making a gift in support of our mission during this time. These changes include:

CARES ACT – allows those who do not itemize on their tax returns, be allowed a charitable donation of up to $300 to reduce their tax liability.

Donor Advised Funds – allows a gift from DAF without affecting your personal financial security.

Charitable Gift Annuity – allows a donation of stock, CD, or cash for guaranteed lifetime fixed payments. You do not pay capital gains when you fund this annuity

Restricted Gifts – If you have made a gift to support a particular project or purpose, removing the restriction will help us meet our current, most pressing needs, including supporting staff and overhead expenses.

SECURE Act – limits stretch payments to IRA beneficiaries to 10 years and heirs pay higher taxes on inheritance. Consider funding a testamentary charitable remainder unitrust with your IRA balance.

If you are interested in learning more about any of these ideas, please contact the Parish Office at 541-342-1139 or at www.stmaryeugenecom.
