Year 6 home learning during school closures

Welcome back to the summer term everyone!

Hi Everyone, I trust you are all well and keeping safe at home. I have missed

teaching you all and I am really looking forward to the day we can all get back

together as a class. In the meantime, it is really important we keep learning and

completing tasks at home because our brains need to keep on growing and

developing just like our bodies.

Make sure you log in every week, to see what tasks you should be completing

from home.

Don’t forget to send us pictures either via our school Twitter @Northcotesch

or directly to my school email address:

[email protected]

I can’t even begin to explain how much I have missed your fantastic work so

would love to see as many examples as possible!

We will be displaying the best examples of your work with next week’s learning,

so remember to still use your nice neat writing and think about creative ways of

showing your work! We are excited to see what you produce!

Reading:

Everyone in the juniors should now have a login for Reading Plus. Please see the

guide some of our Year 6 children have made if you are struggling to log on.

Reading-Plus-Guide-for-Northcote-Parents

Task 1: Reading speed and questioning: Make sure you keep reading daily on

your Reading Plus.

As the weather is still nice, make sure you are using some time to sit and read in

sunshine. Although we cannot go out to different places, reading is able to

transport us to wherever our imagination takes us.

Task 2: Reading for pleasure: Draw and label your favourite character from a

book you have read this week and label with descriptive words/phrases from the

text. Why not warm up by trying some of the ‘draw-a-long’ workshops?

Writing

Thank you to all of the children who have provided us with your favourite

memories from your time at Northcote. If you haven’t already don’t worry,

there is still time to do it, but time is running out. Send your memory to your

teacher’s email address this week – we are enjoying reading them!

Well done to all of the children that completed the research task on Vincent

Van Gogh from last week’s writing task. Here are some examples of the

excellent pieces of work produced.

Task 1: Vincent Van Gogh Biography: Using the information you researched

last week (you can find all last week’s tasks in the link above), I would like you to

write a biography about the life of Vincent Van Gogh. As this is a tricky task, I

have provided a few things to help below:

Features of a Biography

Roald Dahl Biography WAGOLL

Extra information on Vincent Van Gogh

Task 2: Creative writing: Pobble 365 upload a new picture every day. Go on the

link for one day this week and write a story about the image you can see. Make

sure you tweet or email it to us so we can see what you’ve been doing – it also

gives me a chance to enjoy some exciting new stories!

https://www.pobble365.com/

*Don’t forget all of the sentence types we have learnt, to help engage your

reader:

2A, 3 –ed, the more, the more, -ing openers, emotion openers, you could even use

dialogue between characters in your story!

If you have forgotten these, click on this school’s link, which has posters for

each sentence type:

Wow! What a great

piece of writing.

Maths: division

This week, we will recap on some of the learning we have done throughout the

year. If there is anything you find tricky to remember, don’t worry – there will

Page 6: Welcome back to the summer term everyone! · Van Gogh from last week’s writing task. Here are some examples of the excellent pieces of work produced. Task 1: Vincent Van Gogh Biography:

be videos to help you remember important information when attempting each

task.

Task 1: Order of Operations (BODMAS) – Can you remember what each letter

stands for in BODMAS? Never fear, this video should help you understand how

the nmemonic BODMAS can help us with our Order of Operations and what each

letter stands for!

Now you’ve had a recap, attempt the worksheet below. There are 3 different

levels to try. So there should be something for everyone!

BODMAS

Task 2: Percentages – For anyone who likes to pick up a bargain when shopping,

percentages are a must. When shops have sales they will often discount

products. If a t-shirt is reduced by 50% that is half price. If you can’t

remember how to find a percentage of an amount, this video should be useful.

Now that you have had a recap, can you attempt the percentage worksheets

below? Just like in task 1, they are differentiated so attempt the sheet you

think is best for you. Remember: 10% is a magic percentage – we can use our

place value knowledge to find it and then we can use it to help use find any other

percentages. For example:

10% of 240 = 24

10% = 24

20% = 24 x 2 = 48

60% = 24 x 6 = 144 etc…

Have a go – you can do it!

Percentages

Task 3: Arithmetic – I have set two arithmetic papers below: tricky and

trickiest. Start with tricky and move up (if you dare!).

Y6 aritmetic test – tricky paper

Y6 arithmetic test – trickiest paper

Task 4: Think you are an expert on Order of Operations or Percentages? Prove

it! Create a poster informing younger children how to answer questions on

either of these topics. They must be clear, colourful and correct!

All tasks have answer sheets attached to them.

Here are some examples of some of the fantastic maths work you produced last

week:

Here are the answers for last weeks’ work.

Science: The human body

Page 8: Welcome back to the summer term everyone! · Van Gogh from last week’s writing task. Here are some examples of the excellent pieces of work produced. Task 1: Vincent Van Gogh Biography:

This week our focus is: Considering the importance of our diet.

Using the healthy eating and discussion cards below, consider what types of

food you eat mostly in your diet and how balanced you think your diet is. Each

card has a fact and a question relating to that fact. You could write your

answers down, put them on a pic collage or even use the questions in a discussion

with your family. Diet is hugely important and you are never too young or old to

change it for the better.

Healthy eating cards

Last week we looked at the impact of diet on the human body and you were

asked to create a food diary.

Here is an example of the science task from last week:

Humanities – Geography: America

Page 9: Welcome back to the summer term everyone! · Van Gogh from last week’s writing task. Here are some examples of the excellent pieces of work produced. Task 1: Vincent Van Gogh Biography:

Carrying on with our focus of America, we are still finding lots of information

about the country.

Task: To research population figures in America.

Do you know which state is the most populated in America? How about the

least? Why would that be? What is it about one state that makes it so desirable

to live compared to others? Hopefully this task will help you answer all the

above questions and more.

Your task is to fill out the worksheet below to understand which American

states are the most popular using the website www.worldpopulation.com. On the

worksheet, there is a QR code which will take you to the website. At the top of

the website find US States as an option and away you go!

Art: Drawing

Last week, our task was to recreate ‘Starry Night’ by Vincent Van Gogh. Here is

an example of the fantastic work you produced below:

Page 10: Welcome back to the summer term everyone! · Van Gogh from last week’s writing task. Here are some examples of the excellent pieces of work produced. Task 1: Vincent Van Gogh Biography:

Task : This week, I would like you to try to sketch ‘Sunflowers’ by Van Gogh. If

you have paints, you can paint it. If not, you can colour it with anything you have.

The great thing about Van Gogh is that he was an impressionist – often using

colours that weren’t accurate to life, but told us how he felt. What are you

waiting for? Give it a go!

Use this video below to help you with the sketching:

PE

Communicating, Collaborating and

Competing.

Our focus is communicating, collaborating and competing/comparing

performances against previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve

your personal best.

Task 1: Shuffle Stop takes

In one minute, do as many ‘Shuffle stop takes’ as you can. In addition to this,

teach a member of your family to master this skill. Evaluate your performance

and your family member’s performance, suggesting ways to improve

performance.

Record how many you and your family member get each day and see if you can

improve daily.

I’ve put a link here if you need help with these:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=J77JFvfdm4k

Task 2: Sit up challenge

In one minute, do as many ‘sit ups’ as you can. Record how many you get each day

and see if you can improve daily.

Task 3: Lockdown game

Create a fun game that you can play at home during lockdown. You need to use

items that are available around the house e.g. toilet roll, rolled up socks,

baskets, paper cups etc.

Share videos of your game, including rules, on the school twitter page for other

children to watch and play at home.

Spanish

This week’s focus is: Asking personal questions

Task 1: Match the English and Spanish questions.

Task 2: The Spanish questions have been written incorrectly. Re-write them

correctly (use task 1 to support you with this).

Task 3: Only the letter of each word has been provided. Can you work out what

the question is?

Challenge: Write down as many spanish questions that you can think of.

PSHE

This week’s focus: Long-distance friendships

At the moment, we have probably never relied on social media more than right

now. Although the child on the clip below is missing his friend in another

country, his situation will not be too disimilar to yours when you go to different

high schools. But just like Reilly in this video clip, you should realise that social

media allows us to always stay in touch with people who are important to us.

I have suggested two tasks for you to try after watching the clip on the link

below. You could do both of them or just select the task that inspires you most

– the choice is yours:

Task 1: Consider the pros and cons of different social networking sites.

What is good about each site that you use? What are the down sides? You could

rank them in order of importance to you.

Task 2: Create a poster on internet safety.

If you don’t already, you should know the importance of staying safe on the

internet – it is something we talk about regularly in school. Can you create a

poster about staying safe online? The do’s and don’ts of the internet. Aim it at a

child who is younger than you. They will need your expert opinion on how to stay

safe online. Remember, if it is aimed at someone younger, it must be bright and

colourful to get their attention, and above all, correct! You must give out

accurate information – so do your research!

Religious Education

Last week, we focused on creating poems about God or Jesus. Some of your

ideas were fantastic and I have placed some examples below:

Task:Poetry Competition

This week, we will continue our focus on poetry, but you will have a much larger

range of themes to consider and explore:

– God’s Good Earth

– Inspiring

– Holy Words

– Where is God?

– Picturing Faith

Task 2: Create spiritual place with art

Have a look at the examples and themes for the Spirited Arts Competition and

have a go at creating a piece based on the themes provided. You should also

write a short commentary about your piece.

We already have an entry – a 3D model of a mosque (below). It is surrounded by

flags from around the world as he said, he wanted ‘to show that Muslims can be

from any country but can share the one faith of Islam.’

you some fantastic examples to inspire you. Remember to send us your amazing

poetry!

Music

This week’s focus: Pulse and Rhythm

Watch the video clip below. It will tell you all about pulse and rhythm – how it is

essential to any music that is made.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zcbkcj6/articles/z2mqw6f

Task 1: Create an instrument

Use the worksheet below to help you create your very own musical instrument.

How creative can you be with household objects?

make your own musical instrument

Task 2: Practise using pulse and rhythm

Now you have created your own instrument and learned about pulse and rhythm,

can you put it all together and produce pulse and rhythm on your musical

instrument? Even if you don’t make an instrument, you could always try to do

this with your voice, hands or thighs (just like in the clip). Are you brave enough

to post a video of yourself demonstrating it on our twitter page? Go on, I dare

you!
