Library
The school library is a key part of life at The Friary School –
whether it be reading for pleasure, researching online,
exploring text-books or catching up on a Home Learning
Assignment. It is always a hive of activity.
The library opens at 8.30am before school and closes at
4.30pm after school so there is lots of opportunity for you to
do independent study or relax with a book. The library is
equipped with plenty of computers and a printer as well as
tables to do group work and a comfy reading zone to
escape within the pages of your favourite books.
During Year 7 you will have library lessons as part of
Enrichment and you will learn how to work
independently and get the most out of the resources we
have.
Mrs Cresswell our Librarian will be on hand to help you find
your way around and guide you to the resources you need.
Welcome Back!
Welcome back to the second edition of the Friary School
Transition Times. Over the coming weeks we will continue to give
you an insight into life at The Friary and tell you a little bit about
what it will be like during your
first few days and weeks. As you
read through the articles you will
notice one or two activities that
we hope you will try out in
preparation for your first days at
school. Give them a go so that
you can feel better prepared
for joining us in September.
Best wishes, Mrs Hearn
Assistant Headteacher
Reading Activity!
Here at The Friary, you will be encouraged to
read. Practicing your reading will help you to do
well in all of your subjects. You should try and
read every day. When you start at The Friary
you won’t have a weekly reading book but we
will encourage you to take part in reading
competitions and to try and read the books on
the Year 7 reading list. Take a look at this year’s
list by following the link to the Library page of our
website https://www.friaryschool.com/library/
Maybe you could try and read one or two over
the summer holidays and practice your reading.

Good morning!
When you arrive at school the first teacher you will meet is your tutor. Each morning they will take the register and
check you are ready for the day ahead. Tutor Time is a key part of the school day, not least because it is at the
very start it is also when vital learning takes places which links to Personal, Social, Health & Economic Education
(PHSEE), British Values and the School’s Focus Week programme. You will also work on House projects as well as go
to weekly assemblies in the Theatre.
On your very first morning you will all arrive at school and go to assembly. During assembly we will welcome you to
The Friary and introduce you to your tutors and the Heads of House. They will then show you the way to your
classroom and introduce you to your new classmates as well as give you your timetable and school planner.
Your tutor will get to know you really well and will be there to help and support you through your transition to The
Friary. If you’re worried or unsure about anything, they are here to help!
Activity!
Why not practice your walk to school. You could do this as a family or with an older brother or sister. If you are
going to get the bus or a lift to school, look at a map of the local area and see if you can plot your route. Where is
the bus stop? How many minutes will it take you to do each stage of your journey? What time will you need to get
up and be ready to leave in the morning?
Millie
Hello!
My name is Millie and I'm the school dog. I'm a twelve-year old Border
Terrier and you can usually find me with Mr Neale in the Learning Hub.
I like to go for walks around school and sometimes I sneak off into
lessons to see my favourite pupils. At lunch time I like to meet up with
everyone, so if you see me when I'm on duty, please come and say hello!
My job in school is to help pupils and I'm a good listener should you be
feeling worried about anything or just want to hang out for while. If I
can give you any advice for joining the Friary, I would say that being
friendly and positive and not being afraid to ask for help would be a
good start. Oh, and try not to lick people's faces too much. Apparently
it's gross.
I'm looking forward to meeting you.
Millie
School Planner
Your school planner should be
brought to school every day. It
contains lots of really useful
information about school for you,
your parents and carers. You will
be able to use it as a homework
diary and your teachers, parents
and carers will be able to use it to
write important notes to each
other.

Head of House
Fact File Mrs Plested - Johnson
Why is your house the best house? Our success speaks for itself. We are the reigning champions of Sports' Day
three years running. We work hard and work together in order to achieve our
goals. Our students are full of life, character and charm and will always help
you out when needed. We look out for each other and share in each other’s
successes.
What is your favourite food? Anything Italian or with seafood. It reminds me of being on
holiday which is just blissful.
Do you have any hobbies? Running, I just completed my 100km for May challenge, crossfit and
shopping!
What music do you like to listen to? I don't have a particular favourite genre. I grew up listening to my
dad's CD collection which included Queen, The Beatles and The
Jam and now listen to a wide range. I'm still loving Lewis
Capaldi's Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent but also love
listening to anything I could dance to!
Do you have any pets? No pets.
Which football team do you support? I don't I'm afraid but I like to keep track of the local teams and teams
that members of Johnson House play for.
One other interesting fact about you? I once played the role of the Pantomime Fairy in Dick Whittington.
What's the best piece of advice you can give to y6 students
starting in September? To borrow a few words from Frank Ocean: "Work hard in silence. Let your
success be your noise."
Favourite book and why? As an English teacher, I don't think I could pick just one book that is my favourite. A couple of my favourites include
Dickens' Great Expectations and Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, but I still remember the first time I got lost inside
the first Harry Potter and wished that my letter to Hogwarts would come through the post. I was once told to always
read what makes you happy and I would certainly advise others to do the same.
Favourite film and why? Terminator Two: Judgement Day - it's the best sequel ever made! I also love the Marvel films and went to a double
bill that started at midnight just to watch Endgame on the day of release.
