Ways in which counselors assist students:
• Help students stay on track for on-time graduation
• Personal issues: friends, family, school, general
• Crisis intervention and support, mediation
• Academic support, advisement, and encouragement
Our goal today:
• Introduce you to Auburn Riverside High School• Give you an Auburn School District catalog (name)• Help you learn how to register for classes next year
SCHEDULE
• School starts at 8:05 a.m. and ends at 2:35 p.m.
• 6 classes per day – approx. 55 min. each
• 5 minute passing time
• 2 lunches determined by 4th period class
• Lockers are available
How does high school differ from middle school?
• Non-attendance impacts grades significantly
• Treated as a young adult responsible for actions and decisions
• The teacher/student relationship is a partnership. Need to talk to your teachers
• Less drama and fewer rumors. Fighting and “drama” are considered immature
TRANSITION: FREEDOM, OPPORTUNITY, SELF-RESPECT
Freedom
More independence Choosing classes Choosing career path Personal choices – peers, work
habits, activities Special events, Dances
Opportunity
Clubs Sports Activities Honors & AP classes Tech Prep classes Running Start Jobs
Self-Respect
Good choices can lead to respect . . . of peers of family of community . . .diploma/graduation, honors,
awards, work, monetary rewards, feeling of accomplishment, self-confidence, resilience
Advice from Counselors:
Take the most rigorous classes you can (family access) Maintain highest grades possible (transcript) Get involved Develop clear goals for your future Begin networking with your teachers, counselor,
coaches, etc. Stay organized—use planners and calendars Learn to be resilient
What can you do to prepare for high school NOW?
Attend school every day (absences hugely affect grades)
Practice taking notes in core classes—science, math, social studies
Complete every assignment and turn in on due date
Ask your teacher for help, increase your class participation
Study over time for a test rather than cramming Improve your ability to memorize, summarize,
and integrate knowledge

More things to think about…
• Do we get lockers?• Are we going to be in class with seniors?• If I take Algebra 1/2 now is this a high
school credit?• Who is my counselor?• When can I take a higher level PE like
weight lifting?
Any Questions?
