PASTOR`S LETTER
5TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, FEBRUARY 5, 2018
The power of Jesus keeps giving information about his miraculous
activity which assembles crowds of the people. Jesus does not limit
his salvific work to serve only to acquaintances, as was the case of
the healing of the mother in law of Simon Peter, but He wants to
embrace with his divine care all the people who come to Him.
There is some logic procedure in His way of attracting the people
to God: first He heals them from physical suffering in order to show
them the goodness of God. It is the first step to let them know about
a salvific mission of Christ which stays behind His teaching and
acting. It is also the sign of God’s interference in human’s misery which Jesus wants to aim pointing out at its source:
the sin and the way of its healing by a divine grace. Job, the hero of today’s first reading, can serve as a representative
of a human condition being out of God. Enduring in fidelity to God’s commandments and to tradition of the fathers,
in spite of breaking down of justly social relations, brings as a result fruit in a happy life inured by particular difficult
moments of life. This is what Job teaches us today and as a price of his fidelity to God in the middle of his struggle he
receives a special blessing from heaven: new families and friendly relations. Jesus Christ, as a second Job, reminds each
human being of the source of salvation in God and about our duties to search God always and everywhere in order to
experience His salvific grace.

“HOT TOPICS”!
!
St. Celestine, St. Cyprian and St. William Parishes join together for a fourth year to host a series of lectures to discuss “Hot Topics” in to-
day’s challenging society. Please mark your calendars. We hope you can join us for what we feel will be very attention-grabbing discussion!
Monday, February 5, 2017 @ 7:00 PM Topic: “Spiritual Sloth” Presented by: Very Rev. Fr. Jeffrey Grob, J.C.D./Ph.D. Hosting Parish: St. Cyprian Church, 2601 Clinton, River Grove, IL
!
About the Topic: Spiritual Sloth – sometimes referred to as the “noonday devil.” What is it? Considered by some to be among the greatest
modern day stumbling blocks to the spiritual life. Do I have it? If I am inundated by distractions and have lost the ability to care about
work, life, faith – how can I overcome it?
About The Speaker: Very Rev. Jeffrey S. Grob, J.C.D./Ph.D. was born in Madison, Wisconsin, and ordained to the priesthood for the
Archdiocese of Chicago in 1992. University studies include the Pontifical College Josephinum, Columbus, Ohio (B.A., 1988); University of
St. Mary of the Lake – Mundelein Seminary, Mundelein, IL (M.Div., 1992; S.T.L., 1999); Saint Paul University, Ottawa, Ontario (J.C.L.,
2000; J.C.D./Ph.D., 2007). Father Grob wrote his thesis on the revision of the Rite of Exorcism. Father Grob has served as Associate Pas-
tor of SS. Faith, Hope, and Charity Parish, Winnetka (1992-1998), Assistant to the Chancellor (1994-1998), Associate Vicar for Canonical
Services (2003-2008), pastor of St. Celestine Parish, Elmwood Park (2008-2013), Judicial Vicar (2013-2015), and Chancellor (2015-2017).
Father Grob was appointed Judicial Vicar in 2017 by Cardinal Blase Cupich.
A small reception will follow discussion!

First graders are well on the road to
reading. We enjoy reading about the
Superkids in school
and at home with our families.
But our favorite way to read is with our
partners in school. We all get a chance to select a book,
fiction or non-fiction. We find a cozy spot in our
classroom and get lost in a book.
What a great way to share our love
of reading with each other!

THE SEASON OF LENT – LENTEN CALENDAR “40 OFFERINGS” PRAYER, FASTING, AND ALMSGIVING .
We will begin the Lenten Season on Ash Wednesday February 14th. While
many look forward to this time for opportunities for spiritual growth and
renewal, quite often many of us see it as a liturgical season to dread. We
focus on “What am I going to give up?” “How long can I live without
whatever it is I am going to give up?” “How many more days before I don’t
have to give up whatever it is that I am giving up?” Who wouldn’t dread a liturgical season with such a narrow focus?
Over these next few weeks, we are all encouraged to begin reflecting anew on the real purpose of Lent, the power
such a season can be for us, and the real potential for a deeper commitment to our Catholic faith, and most important,
a deeper communion of love with God. Such a deeper understanding could give us a new attitude for Lent. Please
check the bulletin for the “Lenten Calendar” insert and also weekly for suggestions of prayer, fasting and Almsgiving.
Offerings may be dropped off at the baskets around the altar rail before or after all Mass times.
All catechists and catechetical leaders are invited to the first annual Chicago Faith Congress on Saturday, February 10 at Loyola University Chicago. Through recognition, faith
development, and empowerment, the Chicago Faith Congress will provide attendees with unprecedented
opportunities to collaborate with one another and grow in their faith through English, Spanish, and Polish tracks.
Keynote speakers include Bishop Frank J. Caggiano, Bishop Witold Mroziewski, and Father Guillermo Campuzano, CM. For more information and to register, please visit
www.pvm.archchicago.org

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION takes place in our parish every Thursday, beginning after the noon Mass till 4:00pm. At 3:00pm Chaplet of Divine
Mercy in Polish language and 4:00pm in English followed by Benediction.
2018 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL - “COME, FOLLOW ME” This weekend, our parish will be conducting the Annual Catholic Appeal in-pew Commitment Weekend.
Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection.
It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments.
The ACA theme, “Come, Follow Me” was selected to remind us to continue to answer Jesus’ call
to follow Him in thought, word and deed by providing the necessary contribution to fund ministries
and services to share God’s love with many others in our Parish and our Archdiocese.
Each pledge makes a difference because all Parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts
of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR PRAYERFUL CONSIDERATION AND GENEROUS RESPONSE.
