Welcome to Our Parish Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be a part of a Catholic community and a commitment to the life of the parish family. Being a registered parishioner makes things easier when it is time for infant baptism, school registration, weddings, funerals, affidavits and when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor. We can only do this if you are a registered, active and contributing member in the parish. Please call, visit the office or go online to our website to register.

Tweet From Pope Francis We don’t have to go far or come up with grand projects to be charitable. Often the people closest to us could use our help. 11/16
G reetings my brothers and sisters in Christ,
Today we begin the Advent season as we prepare for the coming of Jesus Christ in a stable in Bethlehem. How awesome is that! All the scriptures, this weekend, challenge us about the need to be prepared and ready, for we do not know the time or the moment when the Lord will enter our lives. We have just celebrated the feast of Thanksgiving, and you all know the preparation put into that dinner, the traditional turkey and stuffing, potatoes, cranberries and pumpkin pie. During the next few weeks, many of you will be out in the stores, shopping for gifts for your loved ones, or putting up the lights in your homes and decorating the Christmas tree. There will be lots of preparation so that we can all celebrate Christmas the traditional way.
The Church, through the journey of Advent, wants us to slowdown and focus, not on the exterior, but on our interior lives, our spiritual lives, so that we can have a better understanding of the Incarnation - the coming of God in human form. All the preparations we do in our homes and neighborhoods, and all the gift buying, are all necessary. The Church invites us into a deeper journey of self-awareness of who we honor on Christmas, and what we can do to truly appreciate the gift given by God.
St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans (13:12-14) states, “Let us then throw off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light...put on the Lord Jesus Christ...''
The light is always a great sign of the Risen Christ in our lives. Christ is the light which shines brightly to welcome all in love. On this first Sunday of Advent, the scriptures challenge us to wake up to the signs of the times. Wake up to the call of the Lord to follow and live the Gospel of love. Wake up and stand firm in the truth of Jesus Christ. Wake up from fear and believe that it is only in the Lord that you will find true and lasting happiness. Wake up and put on the cloak of Jesus, which will protect you and keep you from all harm.
Be prepared for the Lord’s coming and you will be saved. One may ask, how can I prepare myself? Simply pray. Prayer helps us to focus on the holy in our lives. It helps us to live good lives, and it challenges us to acknowledge that God must be the number one priority in our lives. Material things and possessions never give lasting happiness and are second to our Lord and God.
As Catholics, it is our obligation to attend Mass on Sunday in our parish church. Why not start, this Advent season, to do just that; come to Mass with your friends and your children, and make an extra effort to receive the Sacraments. Why not consider going to the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Many Catholics do not go to Confession, but it is a very powerful Sacrament. Why not spend less on all those gifts you buy during this season, and give to the poor instead. Just have a look at your closets, many are filled with clothes, while some poor have no clothes. These are just a few examples of how we can prepare ourselves spiritually for the coming of the Lord, both the birthing in Bethlehem and the Lord’s Second Coming.
“So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.” (Matthew 24:44)
W e have a long tradition,
here at Assumption, during the Advent Season, of collecting toys for Christmas. This year is no exception, please take a tag from one of the trees and support our toy appeal by the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Assumption Conference.
Also, we will be having a Penance Service here at Assumption, on Tuesday, December 13,
at 7:00PM. Prepare the way of the Lord by attending this service.
God bless you all for your presence here Sunday after Sunday, for joyfully supporting YOUR PARISH financially and praying for its growth.
Welcome to any visitors here this weekend and all those of other faith traditions. We offer special prayers for all our homebound. We love you all, and please pray for all of us here at Assumption.
In Christ’s Love,
Fr. Gerard

Society of St. Vincent de Paul Assumption Conference
Our conference has been busy! We have served six additional individu-als or families in the last two weeks.
In the next few weeks, we will be collecting Christmas gifts. Our truck
will be here on “Bundle Sunday”, December 11th, to pick up your usable discards of clothing, and household goods. These items will help stock the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store in Los Angeles. We will also provide some things to the friends in need that we serve. Your items will be put to good use and are greatly appreciat-ed.
The Christmas Toy/Gift drive begins today. You proba-bly noticed the Christmas trees set up in the church en-trances. Please select a tag for a child or family, pur-chase a gift, and place the unwrapped gift with the at-tached tag under the trees by December 11th. This year your generosity will help our parish families, our parish military families, autistic children, needy children at two Pasadena schools near our parish, and the Read-ing Partners program in Pasadena. Thank you for your continued support of this traditional Assumption out-reach.

Year-End Giving Appeal Support Assumption Parish
During this Advent season, we tend to reflect upon our many blessings. Assumption Church is a blessing to our families. Each
week, we celebrate the Holy Eucharist together and cele-brate and share God’s love. While you plan on how to thank God for your many blessings, please consider a generous donation to your parish.
Our Year-End Giving Appeal is being mailed to your homes on “Giving Tuesday”, November 29th which is the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. It has become a grow-ing national movement that celebrates and supports giv-ing and philanthropy during this time of year. Prayerfully read it over, then please complete and return it.
When we add a ministry, expand a current one, plan for landscaping, fix a simple plumb-ing issue, or replace burnt out light bulbs in the church… it is all dependent on your generous and continued giving. God bless you!

Archbishop Gomez was elected vice president of the U.S. Con-ference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) during the bishops’
annual fall General Assembly in Baltimore. He was elect-ed to a three-year term. Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, was elected president.
The bishops’ conference president plays a significant role in coordinating and leading charitable and social work and education, while providing a public face for the Catholic Church in the U.S.
Archbishop Gomez has worked extensively in Hispanic ministry and played a key role in creating the Catholic Association of Latino Leaders. He has also been out-spoken on pro-life issues, immigration, and the death penalty. In 2008, Archbishop Gomez was appointed as a consultant to the Pontifical Commission for Latin Ameri-ca. He has served in various roles for the US bishops' conference, including in cultural diversity, doctrine, and Hispanics and liturgy. Congratulations Archbishop Gomez!
