Voluntary Work Experience

• Lasts between 2 and 8 weeks

• This can be extended for up to a further 4 weeks if the claimant moves

into an apprenticeship

• On average it is between 25 and 30 hours per week

• The claimants benefit remains in place for the duration of the placement

Sector based work academies

• Designed with the employer to up-skill potential recruits

• 3 elements - training, work experience and a guaranteed interview

• Lasts between 1 and 6 weeks

Work Trials

• An opportunity for you and a perspective candidate to try the job

• Lasts up to 4 weeks (usual is around 2 weeks)

• The claimants benefit remains in place for the duration of the placement

APPRENTICESHIPS: CONTEXT AND IMPACT

Context:

The government is committed to significantly increasing the quality and

quantity and of apprenticeships in England and achieving 3 million

starts by 2020.

Impact:

Employers experience tangible improvements to their product or

service as a result of apprenticeships

Apprenticeships create real benefits for the taxpayer and the wider

economy

Apprentices complete their apprenticeship with highly marketable

skills and are more likely to remain employed, including with the same

employer

APPRENTICESHIPS DEFINED

Features:

• All apprentices are employed in a job

• Minimum 30 hours /week

• Minimum duration 12 months

• Paid at or > national minimum apprenticeship wage (£3.40/hour)

• All ages 16 and above

• New recruits and/or existing staff

Apprenticeship:

• Job with an accompanying skills development programme

(apprenticeship framework or standard: technical knowledge +

practical experience + wider skills). Mix of learning in the workplace

+ formal off-the-job learning.

• Training and assessment by registered apprenticeship training

provider/assessment organisation.

• Levels: intermediate, advanced, Higher (including Degree)

WHO PAYS IT

APPRENTICESHIP FUNDING AND SUPPORT

(FROM MAY 2017)

There are two types of employers who will be benefit from government

support towards the cost of their apprenticeships training:

1. Employers who haven’t paid the levy (Pay bill <£3.0m p.a.) and

want to purchase apprenticeship training from a provider

2. A levy-paying employer who with insufficient funds in their

digital account to pay for the cost of training and assessment they

want to purchase

• The government will pay 90% of the costs of training and assessment.

• The employer will be responsible for paying 10% of the costs.

USE OF APPRENTICESHIP FUNDING

Digital and government funds can be used for:

Apprenticeship training and assessment

Against and approved apprenticeship standard or framework

With an approved training provider and assessment centre

Up to maximum funding band for that apprenticeship

Digital and government funds can not be used for:

Wages

Travel and subsistence

Managerial costs

Work placement programme

APPRENTICESHIP FUNDING BANDS

Every apprenticeship will be placed in a funding band.

15 bands ranging from £1,500 to £27,000

The upper limit of each funding band will cap the maximum:

• amount of digital funds an employer who pays the levy can use towards an

individual apprenticeship.

• that government will ‘co-invest’ towards, where an employer does not pay

the levy or has insufficient digital funds

Employers will be able to negotiate the best price for the training

they require

APPRENTICESHIPS: ADDITIONAL

SUPPORT/FUNDING

Prior Qualifications

You can train any individual to undertake an apprenticeship at a higher level than a

qualification they already hold.

From May 2017, an individual can be funded to undertake an apprenticeship at the

same or lower level to acquire substantive new skills

Apprenticeship workplace

Funding through the English system will be based on whether the apprentice’s

main place of employment is England.

Smaller Sized employers

Employers with fewer than 50 employees will have 100% of the training

and assessment costs covered when training a 16-18 year old (or 19-24 year

old formerly in care or has a Local Authority Education, Health and Care plan)

16-18 year olds

Government will pay £1,000 to employers, and a further £1,000 to training

providers if they train a 16-18 year old apprentice.
