What is a Scientist?
Close your eyes and imagine a scientist. Try to imagine:What does the scientist look like? What is the scientist wearing? What equipment is the scientist using? Where is the scientist?
Now draw what you imagined on your paperAdd as much detail to your scientist as you canWrite a description of your scientist on your paperBe prepared to share your work
22
Many students and teachers imagine this person when they think of a scientist.
23
Student examples. Did your scientist look like this?
24
More student examples. Did your scientist look like this?
What Do Others Think?• What kinds of pictures do you think you would
see if you did a Google image search for the word “scientist”?
• Look at the search results on the next slide. What do you notice?

Your Scientist
• Did you draw a woman?• Was your scientist African American, Asian, or
Hispanic?• Did your scientist work outside of a lab?• Was your scientist collaborating with other
people?
