About the gospels
• The gospels are narratives about Christ• The gospels strengthen faith in Christ• The gospels present different
responses to Christ or various views about God
21
Luke’s gospel shows…
• That when you’re in the ministry of Christ… you can be a committed and faithful follower.
• Anyone can follow Jesus
• Because anyone can in Jesus’ ministry
22
‘Anyone Can’ in Luke’s gospel
• We will look at 5 passages from Luke that show the expectations of God
• We will also see that Luke presents people who meet those expectations despite their circumstance
23
#1 Anyone can sacrifice
On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise him, he was named Jesus, … When the time of their purification according to the Law of Moses had been completed, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord … and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.” – Lk 2.21-24
24
#1 Anyone can sacrifice
and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.” – Lk 2.24
25
Digging deeper• Sacrifice=required Jewish offering according
to Law (Old Testament Torah)
• [The mother] is to bring … a year-old lamb for a burnt offering and a young pigeon or a dove for a sin offering…offer them before the LORD to make atonement for her, … If she cannot afford a lamb, she is to bring two doves or two young pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. - Lev 12.6-8
26
Digging deeper• Leviticus 12 provides a backup
plan for poor people• Ang kakulangan sa pera ay
hindi dapat hadlang sa pananalig!
• Standard sacrifice – lamb/goat‘Socialized’ sacrifice –doves or pigeons
27
• Joseph & Mary were so poor that they couldn’t afford a lamb. Yet they still sacrificed as prescribed by God. They gave to God what they could afford.
• So J&M had a different sacrifice, but the standard was still the same!
• How do you respond to God’s call to sacrifice?
• God expects you to give your best in whatever situation you are in.
28
#2 Anyone can learn
[Jesus] came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
29
#2 Anyone can learn
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” – Lk 10.38-42
30
Digging deeper• During Jesus’ time, women were not
expected to learn from rabbis.• During Jesus’ time only students of
rabbis could ‘sit at their feet’ to listen.• Are were learners? Do we expect our
Bible talks, our d-partners, our spouses, our kids…to be learners?
• Luke shows us that against culture and worldly ways, anyone can learn.
31
#3 Anyone can be thankful
As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him… When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan… - Lk 17.11-16
32
#3 Anyone can be thankful
[cont] Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.” - Lk 17.11-16
33
Digging deeper
• Samaritans were outcasts, considered ‘dogs’ by Jewish nationals.
• Jesus lifts up this Samaritan for his thankful heart.
• How grateful are we in our circumstances?• No matter your situation or background,
you can be grateful for what God has done in your life.
34
#4 Anyone can changeJesus entered Jericho…A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but being a short man he could not, because of the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today." So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. All the people saw this and began to mutter, "He has gone to be the guest of a `sinner.' "
35
#4 Anyone can change
But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount."Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.“ - Lk 19.1-10
36
• During Jesus’ time (Roman occupation), tax collectors were seen as suspicious characters or traitors.
• Luke shows us that in Jesus’ ministry, people’s prejudices don’t lessen God’s ability to change people.
• Do we really believe that anyone can change?
• Anyone, even those we don’t expect, can make a positive impact for God!
Digging deeper
37
Conclusions• Luke shows us that Jesus’ ministry
highlights people who fulfill the expectations of God despite challenges.
• Despite external challenges…• Anyone can sacrifice• Anyone can learn• Anyone can be thankful• Anyone can change
38
Conclusions
• These examples show us that his standards are the same, God does not show favoritism, and that he enables people to be faithful in any capacity.
• God believes in you, and you can be faithful whatever circumstances you’re in or will be in.
• Let’s be a Jesus ministry in our area!
