BROADWINDSOR GROUP PARISH COUNCIL It was yet another busy meeting in February. The council formally welcomed a new member, Susanne Laurie, who was co-opted to represent the Seaborough ward. The council is back to its full complement with 15 councillors. Contact details for all of them can be found on the council website. The annual parish meeting has been set for Monday 15 May at Drimpton Village Hall. A formal agenda will be published nearer the date. Please get in touch if your group or organisation would like to speak at the meeting, or if you would like to reserve an exhibition space. Please come along. It’s a great opportunity to celebrate the activities and achievements of the local community, hear about the role and work of the parish, district and county councils, ask questions, raise important issues and enjoy some delicious home-made refreshments and a good chat. At the February meeting, Councillor Jacqui Sewell provided an update on the proposals for local government reform and reported that six of Dorset’s councils want to replace the county’s existing nine local authorities with two new ones - one urban, one rural. The Secretary of State for Local Government and Communities has been formally requested to support this proposal. Further information can be found at futuredorset.co.uk

Members heard about the forthcoming volunteering trip to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands by Grace Reeder, a student from Broadwindsor, who has successfully raised nearly £4,000 towards the expedition which takes place in July. Grace will be teaching children to speak English, helping to restore local infrastructure damaged by recent earthquakes and learning about the area’s heritage and wildlife. Further information about Grace’s trip will be posted on the council’s website. For some time now, the parish council has been aware of the poor condition of some of the local fingerpost signs. These signs are very much part of a village’s cultural heritage and the council would like to see them remain. Dorset County Council will no longer fund their restoration and costs have to be met by the parish. The parish council is currently liaising with other parishes which have restored their own signs, in order to share best practice and resources and reduce costs. The next council meeting will be at 7.30pm on 13 March at Comrades Hall. Please join us, members of the public and press are very welcome. The agenda will be posted on village noticeboards and online. As always, please get in touch if I can be of any help. Helen Cudmore, Clerk to the Council 01308 488440. [email protected] COMMUNITY LAND TRUST Site feasibility surveys of the proposed Netherhay Lane site in Drimpton should be completed by the end of February. This information will inform the initial layout design sketches by Trewin Design Architects, to form the basis for discussions with planning and highways departments at Dorset County Partnerships. Once the proposed layout plans are at a more detailed stage, BGP CLT will hold a public consultation meeting during the summer at which proposed layout plans will be on display and comments invited from the local communities.

The CLT will also host a housing ‘clinic’ at which Yarlington Housing Group and Dorset Councils Partnership’s housing enabling officer will be present to respond to questions on the housing register, tenancy and shared ownership. The CLT’s engineering consultant (Barnaby Associates) has had initial discussions with the highways department, which has indicated it does not wish to have a pavement installed on Netherhay Lane, and that any entrance splay to the development should be designed for mixed use (traffic and pedestrian). As there is an existing regular bus service along Netherhay Lane, there is the possibility of negotiating for the bus stop to be moved into the development entrance, causing minimal disturbance to the current road layout arrangements. The CLT has highlighted the issue of sewerage problems currently experienced in Drimpton. Our preferred option would be to install an on-site sewerage system for this development, which would not impact on the mains sewer. This would be similar to the successful arrangements in place in the Bramble Hay development in Marshwood. Dorset Councils Partnership is in the process of collating housing need information for the Broadwindsor Group Parish area. The CLT, along with development partner Yarlington Housing Group, is developing a housing allocation plan, covering priorities and definitions of ‘local connections’. Dorset Councils Partnership will receive an allocation from central government’s community housing fund. BGP CLT will be able to apply to this for capital grant funding for the next stage of the project, to develop a planning application. A video showing an example of another rural CLT project in Devon (Christow CLT) was shared by Wessex CLT Projects. BGP CLT will publish its first quarterly Newsletter in March. BROADWINDSOR PRIMARY SCHOOL www.broadwindsor.dorset.sch.uk We have got off to a flying start in 2017 with continued hard work and plenty of activities and plans ahead. January saw a new badminton club start (in addition to a day time session for two KS2 year groups) and sporting activities including cross country, football and netball matches. We also invited ‘Dan the Skipping Man’ into school for a day to show each class tricks and tips for learning or improving skipping skills. This coincided with the annual visit of the Life Van, talking to the children about health issues appropriate to their age. We took 31 pupils and many of their parents to the Young Voices mass choir event in Birmingham at the end of January. This is the fourth year we have organised this trip, joining more than 6,000 other children from around the country. The children had practised and rehearsed for several months prior to the event. It was a fantastic spectacle. February plans include more sporting fixtures, fundraising for World Heart Day and a film night for the children. As I mentioned in the January issue, we are looking for a governor to join the governing body in the capacity of authority governor. We will also have another vacancy – a co-opted governor, from April. If you think you would like to be involved in school life and have time to commit to this important role but would like more information, please contact either myself or Eddie Gerrard, Chair, or Sally Dawson, Clerk to the Governors, on 01308 868376. Nigel Arnold BROADWINDSOR WI It was a pleasure to welcome Christine as a new member. We would like more new members so please contact Brenda on 01308 868392 for details.

We don’t always have a speaker at our members’ evenings, we meet to enjoy each other’s company over a glass of wine and tea or coffee. We can discuss resolutions that have been put forward by the WI at a national level. It is rather good to think that a small group of ladies in a little village in deepest Dorset can vote to have topics discussed that can make a difference in the country/world, such as climate change and female genital mutilation. Lynne collected our yearly subscriptions of £39, which works out at £3.25 per month. Not bad for a night out. Once we had finished our business we carried on with the fun part of the evening, a quiz set by Rita. It was good fun but I’m not sure whether the wine helped or hindered our brain power. We wished Donna and Ann well in their zip wire in Weymouth later in the month and congratulated the committee for organising a very nice evening enjoyed by everyone. Camille Newall BROADWINDSOR AND DISTRICT OVER 60S’ CLUB Chair Annette Nunn opened our first meeting of the year with several announcements. There were lists for us to choose our outings from May to November this year. Club membership fees are rising from next month when subs are due. An early reminder was given that this year’s meeting will be on Wednesday 23 August so we don’t clash with the Melplash Show. Pearl was welcomed back after recovering from ill health. Sadly, one of our members from Beaminster, Mary Graves, has died, and a Broadwindsor ex-member, Lionel Pike, has been in hospital for several weeks after a car accident. Annette asked for suggestions of speakers for the coming year and beyond. She read us a few historic details about the club, from its birth in May 1972. It started with 100 members and we have only improved on that figure by 20. The best details she had found in these notes was the ‘Duties of The Chair’ which were: stand up, speak up, shut up!

Speaker Martin Newbury, from the Bridport branch of the RNLI, explained the many and varied situations the charity’s magnificent volunteers carry out all through the year, even on Christmas day. Volunteers come from all walks of life and give up their time - and lives at times - to carry out sea and flood rescues all over Great Britain, from Jersey in the south to The Shetlands in the north. The volunteers have to be trained to paramedic standards, as often there are medical situations involved in rescues. There are 330 lifeboat stations around the country. The cost of the latest, all-weather lifeboat was £2.2 million. The smaller inshore boats start at £48,000. And for all this, the RNLI receives no Government funding. The organisation relies solely on charity. Martin explained the role of the main depot at Poole, the amount and variety of equipment stored there and the virtual reality training carried out there. So many aspects attached to this wonderful organisation and the wonderful people who help it to succeed makes one feel very humble. I do hope the little lifeboat collection box on the speaker’s table was very weighty when he left! Alice Moule WHITE LION NEWS It’s been a busy time really, considering we are still in the winter months. January and February have seen us fully booked on many occasions. One of those was our Mexican night, for which we sold 40 tickets in just four days. We all had a great night and the food was superb. We plan two theme nights a year. The next one will be a Spanish night. The past few months have sadly seen us all be quite poorly. We had a holiday in January and, thankfully, we were able to go even if a seagull had other ideas. Our plane from Bournemouth to Tenerife had to make an emergency landing at Gatwick. When we are away, we leave the pub in the capable hands of the staff, who do a fantastic job. Without them the pub would not be what it is now, so a big thank you to them all. This month sees the start of our

wood-fired pizza oven, which I’m sure is going to go down very well. You can also book us for your own party if you would like great pizza. We look forward to March and having Spice & Rice back with us after their holiday. There is lots going on at the pub. Always look out for the boards outside to keep you up to date. Thank you for all your continued support. Without the village, the pub would really struggle to stay open. BROADWINDSOR & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY At our January meeting we reviewed the classes to be included in this year’s show schedule. In the open horticultural section, the only change is a new class for red onions under 250g. This replaces the one for pickling shallots. In the flower section, new classes have been introduced for upright fuchsia, cosmos, clematis and penstemon. The photographic classes were confirmed as Tree(s), Single Flower, In My Garden, Food, My Family, Derelict, Movement and Black & White (any subject). The young people’s photography class is Pets. In the homecraft section, there will be classes for a tea-loaf, lemon drizzle cupcakes and shortbread fingers, while the men will have the opportunity to display their skills at making fruit scones. Our next event is the coffee morning on Saturday 22 April. As well as the usual cake and plant stalls, we are planning to have a display of old photos of Broadwindsor. If you have any such photos that you could lend us, please speak to Harold Jenkins on 868091. Brian Stone DRIMPTON NEWS Kath Taylor 1920 - 2017 Kath was born on 23 September 1920 in a cottage opposite the school in Drimpton, which she later attended at the cost of one penny a day. Kath had poor health as a child and missed quite a lot of schooling. When she left school she went into service for Lady Gibbon at Greenham Court. It wasn’t her first choice but her dad thought she would be safe and be looked after. Kath loved dancing and often climbed out of the window to meet George and cycle to the local dances. She later worked at Merriot Moulding, making munitions, a job she really enjoyed. She cycled from Drimpton to Merriot, did a day’s work, then

cycled home. And if there was a dance in the area, she’d hop on her bike and dance the night away. In 1938 Kath moved to No 1 Spearmead with her parents. This was to be her home for almost 79 years. Kath and George were married in 1942. Jean arrived in 1943, followed by Judith in 1945, Elizabeth in 1951 and Richard completed the family in 1955. Kath loved being a mum. She was skilled with the needle and made most of the clothes for the children. She was very particular about the way she dressed. The right shoes were very important, with trainers being a definite no-no. George died in 1992. As well as dancing, Kath enjoyed playing whist and was still playing at 90. Shopping was also one of her favourite pastimes and she especially liked lunch at Morrisons in Yeovil. She just loved to be out anywhere, even if the location or occasion was not her cup of tea. Netherhay chapel was very close to Kath’s heart and where, until recent years, she regularly attended. In the early years, she was involved in various activities such as drama and a choir. Being unable to attend services, Kath maintained a keen interest in what was going on at chapel. In paying tribute to their parents, the family said that they were always encouraged to be themselves and never pressurised to conform. When decisions had to be made, the pros and cons of the situation were discussed and the youngster had the last word. The children always felt that they were always supported, for which they were very thankful. Richard Heal ST MARY’S CHURCH ANNUAL CHURCH MEETING Chaired by the Team Rector, Rev Canon David Baldwin, the annual meeting on Tuesday 7 March at 7pm is open to everyone. Please come along and hear about the activities of your parish church in 2016 and plans for 2017, including services, celebrations and the financial report.

Norman Marsden LEWIS EDWARDS 11 March 1926 - 30 December 2016 The family of the late Lewis Edwards would like to thank all relatives and friends who attended his funeral at Yeovil Crematorium on 20 January and for all the cards, messages of sympathy and donations in his memory to Dorset Air Ambulance Service. Special thanks to Neville Adams for conducting the service, and Linda Paget for the catering. CLAPTON, WAYFORD, DRIMPTON & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY January and February have been busy months for our society. In January, we had a very successful food and quiz evening. Some 19 teams competed, with opportunities to sample the savoury tasters and puds between questions. Drimpton food was of its normal high standard, so even if a quiz was not your thing the evening was still great fun. Thanks to Bob Shepherd for his excellent questions, Rosemary Shepherd for organising the catering and Andrew Pastor for racing between the tables, adding up the scores and ensuring the evening ran smoothly. There were 160 people at our tenth annual Potato Day. In addition to seed potatoes, there was an excellent selection of Heritage seeds, onion sets, fruit trees and bushes. This year, we had 50 entries for our potato growing competition to see who can grow the heaviest crop of potatoes from a single seed potato. This will be judged at our annual show on 12 August. One of our local artists, Jenny Beck, organised potato printing

for children and there was more excellent Drimpton food, organised by Rosemary Shepherd. Thanks to Pennards Nurseries for making the day possible. Next year’s event will be on 3 February. Our March meeting is on the 15th, at 7.15pm at Drimpton Village Hall. James Cross will be talking about the development of the Bishop’s Palace, Wells, where he is head gardener. The garden is an RHS Partner Garden, a status awarded only to gardens of ‘outstanding and exceptionally high standards of planting and design’ - a great achievement for the team working under James. The garden extends over 14 acres, with protection from a moat, and includes an arboretum, a garden for reflection and water pools. This promises to be a fascinating talk which will add so much to any future visit to the Bishop’s Palace. Non-members welcome. Martin Rowan-Robinson

BURSTOCK NEWS After a busy Christmas at St Andrew’s, things have been quiet at Burstock, with only one service in January. February has started well with our first service being eucharist and baptism. Henriette Constance was baptised by the Rev Elfrida Savigear. She is the daughter of Andy and Emily Shute of Burstock. The church was full of family and friends. As reported last month, our Pancake and Coffee Morning will be held on 28 February. Our Three Churches Walk and Lunch is on Saturday 1 April at Broadwindsor. The walk starts at 10.30am and lunch served from 12.30pm in Comrades Hall. See advert for details. We were all sorry to hear that Dorothy Ewins has had an accident and damaged her hand. We all wish her a speedy recovery. Our flower and cleaning lady for March is Mrs M Jenkins. John Hansford

BLACKDOWN WI

At the January meeting, the winner of an early spring flower competition was Jane Rudkin, with Margaret Studley as runner-up. Julie Rudkin and Margaret Studley were joint winners of New Year Resolution. At the February meeting, competition winners were: New Year’s Resolution, = 1 Julia Borland & Margaret Studley. Early Spring Flower, 1 Jane Rudkin; 2 Margaret Studley. Sue and Sue are going to ‘Meet the Federation’. The annual outing date has been set for 8 June. Suggestions welcome. The evening’s talk was by Neil Lovesey, of Picket Lane Nursery and Gardens, entitled The Bee-Friendly Garden. Without bees, 70% of all food would be unavailable. There are over 260 species of bees in the UK, and they have been in steady decline in the last 30 years, due to the introduction of the Asian Bee which carries a parasite Varroa destructor (Varroa mite), which attacks British bees and sucks their blood. We were informed of the many types of bees including Tree Bees, Mining Bees, Carder Bees and Honey Bees to name just a few. He explained the workings of a bee hive and the beneficial factors of having bees in your garden. He explained how he collects a swarm in a skep and then introduces them to his hive. He said that one colony of bees could produce 150lb of honey. He explained a bee’s life cycle: Born – two weeks are spent feeding grubs, two weeks on sentry duty and then they start going out and about near the hive to learn local geography. Then they forage pollen for protein, nectar as a carbohydrate and water. We also learnt that bees don’t hibernate and that they don’t go to the toilet all winter, only popping out in spring on a ‘cleansing flight’. Neil said the best plants for bees were long flowering and those that produce seeds, such as buddleia, hypericum and verbena. He also

Page 15: WELCOME! [broadwindsor.files.wordpress.com] · 3/2/2017  · flowers or decoration. Yet it is a time of hope, of new beginnings, a time ... enjoy some delicious home-made refreshments

described the importance of autumn and spring flowering plants that provide the bees with essential food during the colder months. For more information on bee-friendly gardening, Neil has some notes on his website www.picketnursery.co.uk A Red Flower: 1 Jane Rudkin; 2 Pauline Bowditch. A Valentine Heart: 1 Teresa Carter, 2 Mandy Stead. We look forward to welcoming people for our coffee morning on Friday 14 April. It is with great sadness that we have had to unexpectedly say goodbye to Shelagh who will be so missed throughout the group Julie Rudkin

SEABOROUGH NEWS In the chilly and mournful month of February, it was a sad moment to say goodbye to the late June Creed, so long a villager and now buried in the churchyard with her husband. Our thoughts are with their family. But there is the promise of better things in the future. The month of June will see the church celebrate a wedding for the first time in over a decade. We are also very lucky for the incredibly generous repainting of the interior thanks to the father of the bride, Chris Harwood. Thank you. A little sooner there is a date for your diaries. On Sunday 21 May at 3pm, we will ‘Beat the Bounds’ of the parish of Seaborough, an ancient ceremony at Rogationtide, brought back here this year. We hope you will join us then and on Easter Sunday, April 16, in the church. Steven Loveridge

The first two mentioned wish to submit their names for re-election. Anyone else, who is a shareholder, is invited to put their name forward for election to the committee and should contact the secretary, Susannah Madigan on 868806 or email [email protected] Closing date for applications is Friday 10 March. Fraser Hughes, Chairman BADCE RAW MILK Would you be interested in buying locally-produced, raw unpasteurised milk straight from the farm, with nothing added and nothing taken out? Do you want to help reduce food miles? We are looking to sell fresh, raw milk from our family farm just outside Broadwindsor on the Drimpton Road, with plenty of off-road parking.

Our milk would be available at the farm gate via a purpose-built, hygienic milk dispenser. The Food Standards Agency have strict rules with which we would have to comply to ensure that hygiene and testing of our milk are of the highest standard. You can be confident that what we produce is fresh and to the highest standard. Would you buy our milk? We are looking to gauge whether there is sufficient support for us to proceed with this venture, so we would be grateful if you could either text, call or email us with your views. THE BISHOP’S KITCHEN Two recipes from a friend’s supper party

CURRIED PRAWN RISOTTO (serves 4)

1 tbsp olive oil, 100 g butter ,1 large onion finely chopped, 300g Arboriorisotto rice, 70 g frozen peas, 30g medium curry powder (adjust quantity to suit), 200 g peeled prawns chopped in half ,1 litre vegetable stock, approximately 1 large glass white wine, 100 g mascarpone cheese, sprinkle of white pepper.

Melt the oil and butter on a medium heat in a flameproof pan/dish. Add the onion and cook until soft. Do not burn. Add the peas and stir for 1 min then add the curry powder and mix. Add the rice and stir in the wine until the rice has soaked it up. On a medium to low heat, gradually add the veg stock constantly. Do not let it dry out. Do this for approximately 15-20 mins until the rice is cooked al dente. Add more curry powder if required. Add the mascarpone and stir in, then stir in the prawns to warm through. Serve immediately on warm plates.

CHOCOLATE POTS

225g plain chocolate (at least 60%), 15g soft butter, 4 egg yolks 150ml double cream, 150ml full cream milk, 50g caster sugar.

Break chocolate into a heat proof bowl & place over a pan of simmering water. Leave until melted, then remove & stir until smooth. Stir in melted butter & the egg yolks. Put the cream, milk & sugar in a small pan & bring to boil then stir into chocolate mixture. Pour into 6 x100ml pots & leave somewhere to cool to set, do not refrigerate. Serve with a spoon of crème fraiche and a dusting of chocolate powder.
