Meet Joseph: Hi! I’m Joseph!

Did you know: I have

11 brothers! 11, can

you believe it??

I’m also like the

second youngest,

which means I don’t

get heard much!

What’s the first

thing you think of

when you think

about my story?

I live in a place called

Canaan (“Kay-nun”)

with my father,

Jacob (who’s also

called ‘Israel’

Most people think

of my colourful coat,

or Egypt, where lots

of my story takes

place (hence the

funky theme!)

The most exciting thing

about my story, is that it all

points to Jesus (yes, like

actual Jesus, in like 1000

years time! Crazy right?

Joseph Intro Questions:

• Have you argued with siblings or family members this week at all? • Do you have a favourite item of clothing? How would you feel if it got

broken or ripped? • Have you ever visited Egypt or been in a desert? What are you like with

heat? Are you someone who likes sunshine or shade? • Have you ever sold something? (toys, clothes, games etc) What is the

most amount you’ve sold for?

The Story so far…

Do you remember the story of Joseph so far?

Joseph is the son of Jacob (also called Israel)

and has 11 brothers. Together they live in the

land of Canaan. Now, Joseph was Jacob’s

favourite son and he gave Joseph a

spectacular robe! But his brothers got jealous

of this (I can see why!) and began to hate him.

Joseph then had two dreams from God, one

involving grains of wheat and the other the

moon and stars. Both dreams were about him

ruling over his brothers (remember these

dreams we real and from God).

Today, we read how Joseph’s relationship with

his brothers develops…

Bible Reading:

Grab a Bible and turn to Genesis 37 v 12-36

Do you remember why we read the Bible? Because the Bible is God’s Word, and

therefore every time we read the Bible, God actually speaks to us – how

incredible is that!?

Why not pray right now that God would speak into your heart as we read

together, and that we might see Jesus and know Him more?

Give Genesis 37:12-36 a read and we’ll go through it together!

You can also read it here: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+37%3A12-36&version=NIV

Video Story:

Before we go through the passage, let’s

watch that story to help us picture it better!

Our video story today is in two parts – you’ll

need to watch them both! Together, they

cover our Bible reading. Their taken from

the film, ‘Joseph: King of Dreams’ – have you seen it??

Bible Study: Keep your Bible open at Genesis 37 v 12-36

Here are some questions to focus in on as we go through our passage together:

• In v13-14, what does Joseph’s father (Israel) say to him?

• As Joseph approaches his brothers in the distance, what do we learn about his

brother’s intentions? (v18)

• Sorry what…!? So Joseph has gone from being bullied from his brothers to

them planning to kill him… Do you think Joseph is deserving of this? Do you

think Joseph has done anything wrong?

• In v20, what do the brothers say they are going to do with Joseph?

• Are all Joseph’s brothers against him? Check out v21… Who decides to speak

up for Joseph? What does he suggest in v22?

• After the brothers commit their horrible actions against Joseph (remember

they don’t actually kill him) – what does Judah (brother) say in v27?

• How much did they sell Joseph for?

• So Joseph has now been bullied, stripped of his robe, almost killed and now

sold off by his brothers – how do you think Joseph might be feeling right now?

• Do you remember Joseph’s dreams about his brothers? Do they seem to be

outworking? Remember – they were from God, who keeps His word!

• In v29, who goes back to find Joseph? (He is the youngest of all the brothers).

• As if the brothers haven’t done enough, what do they do lastly in v31-32?

• How did Jacob, Joseph’s father, react to this in v34-35?

• So, not only did Joseph’s brothers sell him to the Midianites, what do they

then do with Joseph inv36?

Next week we are going to discover what

happens with Joseph while he’s in Egpyt!

Joseph Now, do you remember we said that as amazing and crazy as Joseph’s story is,

what’s more amazing, is that Joseph’s story points us to Jesus?

How does Joseph point us to Jesus?

If all the Bible is about Jesus (and it is), then how can

someone who lived like 1000 odd years before Jesus

actually point us to Jesus and be the intention of the

story?? This is something we’re going to look at every

week as hear about Joseph!

Here’s a short exercise for you:

Take 2-3 mins (or longer if needed) and list, either in your head or on paper, all

the things you think link Joseph and Jesus together from our story today

Here’s my thoughts about the links between Joseph and Jesus from our passage:

- Joseph’s father sent him to reach out to his brothers / Jesus’ Father sent

Him to reach out to the whole world

- Joseph’s brothers betrayed him and plotted to kill him behind his back /

Jesus was also betrayed and had people around him who plotted to kill him

- Joseph was stripped of his ornate robe / Jesus was stripped of his clothes

- Joseph was sold for 20 pieces of silver / Jesus was handed over for 30 pieces

- Joseph’s robe was dipped in blood, that was used for a sacrifice / Jesus was

sacrificed as the perfect lamb

Jacob wept for his son, Joseph / God the Father wept for His Son, Jesus

So there you have it – a bigger picture of how Joseph’s story actually points

forward to the Lord Jesus – how cool is that!

Now, why is this important?

Why does any of this matter?

And what has it got to do with us?

Maybe you have friends or people close to you who have betrayed you or gone behind your back

and you've been left out, just like what happened to Joseph.

Well friends, we have a God who understands how we feel. And knows how we feel. How do I

know that? As we’ve just seen, Jesus, God's own Son who Himself was and is God, actually went

through this same concept.

We're told in the book of Luke (22:4-6), that Judas, one of Jesus's 12 disciples, went to some of the

authorities that were trying to imprison and kill Jesus and discussed with them how we he would

betray Jesus and hand Jesus over to them in the exchange of money, of all things!

We forget that Jesus chose Judas after praying all night. They spent every day together for three

years, talking, eating together, laughing. Jesus sent him out on missions. Judas shared in miracles

with Jesus, and yet Judas turned on his friend, his brother and betrayed Jesus.

You may be tempted to leave places you are in where this happens, or to turn your back on some

of those people; I know I felt that, but don't give up. You are walking where great people have

walked before. They are remembered as great because they did not allow the betrayal to stop

them. Instead they learned how to turn their pain into greater use for God.

It's comforting for us that Jesus can empathise with us, because he has been there and come out

the other side, and if we try and look to God for His greater plans, as Jesus did, we too will come

out the other side and bring glory to God.

Judas's money-making scandal, combined with Jesus' obedient submission to God, transformed

the world as we know it - Jesus longs for each one of us to know Him and stand with Him - and he

has made that possible by coming to earth completely as a human, living a perfect life and then

dying a perfect death on the cross, and rising triumphant 3 days later, so that you and I can

actually have a relationship with the one true, living God - the same God of Joseph and the same

God of Jesus – how awesome is that!?

So we’re gonna spend some time thanking God in prayer

(scroll down)

Well done! (You’ve finished)

We’re praying for you, we miss you, we love you – keep being

thankful for the positive things and seeing Jesus in everything

Scott Rushby, TBCYouth, April ‘20©

This week, our wider church family started a 4 session series on Prayer,

based on these 4 points – today they’re thinking about PAUSE.

I want to encourage you to spend a bit of extra time on that section today.

P – PAUSE – take a minute in silence, and bring your worries and thoughts

to God. Are you finding daily time to pause and meet with God? What

does physical rest look like for you in this time? What about mental rest?

And Spiritual rest? Pausing is really important

R – Reflect – Jesus knew He would be betrayed. He knew He was heading

to the cross. He went through with it because He knew you by name, and

He wanted every chance to save you – why not take a moment to ponder

that…

A – ASK – Do you have things you want ask God for? Peace, comfort, joy

maybe in this time? Are there things you want to ask God for about other

people around you?

Y – YEARN/YES – To Yearn for God means to actively want Him more. How

can you actively try and seek Jesus more this week? Why don’t you ask for

God’s help with that
