A Message from the Director

Dear Weinberg Families and Residents,

Welcome to Spring! Hopefully our crazy weather this year will begin to warm up and stay this way for a while! The last few months have been fun and busy. We had more families participate in our 2 Sedars for Passover this year than in years past and it was won-derful to see so many of our residents celebrating the holiday with those closest to them. We just had our first Weinberg specific Volun-teer Luncheon to honor those who dedicate their time to help out in many different capacities. Our volunteers help doing 1:1 visits, pass meals or coffee, run discussion groups , help in our creative arts and more! Volunteers assisted in the recent Fashion Show produced by residents—-clothing all made from recycled materials—-staff and residents as models—-what a lot of laughs! We also participated in the Breathe Deep Walk for lung cancer held this past April at Deerfield High School. We also had the Walk for Israel take place in our building and around the neighborhood for those residents who were interested. Emily Mysel, Social worker and Friend Center Manager was selected to be on the Panel Discussion at the Looking Glass Theater on Michigan Avenue for the Play “Still Alice” For those who haven’t read the book, this play is about a woman in her 50’s who is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. I thought the play was outstanding and the panel discussion after was very educational. A job well done to Emily! For more information or for tickets, please call 312-337-0665. Weinberg Community is currently being featured on the Highland park public Access television station this month. Feel free to go to our website, www.cje.net and look at our short clips on YouTube about our community! We are looking forward to a number of upcoming events in the next few months including our Memorial Day BBQ being held on the Gidwitz Patio, our participation in this years 4th of July parade in Deerfield, walking in the Alzheimer’s Walk and our various other pro-grams. Keep your eye out for our emails and flyers that we will be sending on our upcoming

events. As a reminder, we have our resident referral program. If any resident or family member refers a resident to either Gidwitz or Friend Center and the person signs a 1 year lease, you will receive a check for $750.00. Our best referrals come from you, so please think of us!

Feel free to call me with any suggestions at any time.

Jennifer Weininger– Director Of Weinberg Community for Senior Living

A few reminders: Please sign in at the front desk, and sign out when leaving—-we need to insist on this for the safety of our residents and staff. Please obtain a form at the front desk when going out of town, and indicate an emergency contact for when you are away. You can alternately call front desk to give the above informa-tion, and it will be sent to pertinent staff. If you have a private caregiver working for you, please make sure we are aware of this. If your family member is in the hospital and will be going to a rehab facility, please advise us, to guarantee continuity of care.

Community MitzvahsPlease share with us any recent or upcoming simchas in your

family so that we may share in your joy!

DEPARTMENT UPDATEWe are proud to share that Weinberg’s Life Enrichment Department spent numerous hours working on a recycled fashion show project featuring many of our residents and staff. They showed off their talent at our April birthday party (see front cover). Kudos to the Life Enrichment Department and our wonderful residents and volunteers!

GETTING TO KNOW YOUJosephine Levine

Jo moved to Gidwitz Place 1/15/2001 with her beloved husband Oscar. Oscar died 6 years later, after a marriage of 65 years. What a “kibitzer” he was a good guy! Jo was born in Ft Worth Texas, where her father worked as a peddler. A .story Jo recounted in Women’s Group remains with me; In Ft Worth houses were built on stilts because or water from streams. In the middle of the night Jo’s mother heard what she thought was a ghost

”woo-woo” as she woke her husband. Upon his inspection he found that a cow had become wedged under the house. He rounded up some men, and with a rope they extricated that poor cow.

A bit different was growing up in Albany Park, where she was part of a group of 20 something guys and gals. While on a date with a neighbor friend who worked for a New York “sharpie” who was in town visiting, this Sharpie became the third wheel on their date. This happened in 1941. Forward to 1942 a lovely wedding at the Midland Hotel in downtown Chicago, After one year of marriage Oscar was drafted into the Army and fought in the Battle of the Bulge, was captured and was MIA for one year. Then Jo received notification that Oscar was a POW liberated on Good Friday.

The couple resided in Chicago Oscar a manufacturer of shower curtains. They had 2 daughters, LK (Lynn) resides in Pine Bush NY in the Catskills and teaches calligra-phy. Vicki resides in Ft Sheridan. She has 3 children-Kim and twins Abbie and Kevin. Jo has 5 great grandchildren-inclusive of 2 sets of twins Cathcher and Dakota and Julie and Phoebe. Cameron is a brother to one set of twins. How Jo lights up when talking about her family!

Jo is a longtime part of out Weinberg Community, a joy to know, wonderful sense of humor, beautiful inside and out. We are so fortunate to have Jo with us.

Bridget Kelly

We have been fortunate to have Bridget Kelly on board with us for the past 6 years. A Deerfield resident, she graduated from Deerfield H.S. and has been active in the community for many years. Bridget has many talents and creativity is her forte. She was the cake decorator at Jewel Bakeshop, working 60 hours a week inclusive of Chef’s Kitchen as well. After the birth of her children, she did child daycare in her home. Her 5 children range from 17 to 31 years of age. How she glows when talking about her 2 grandchildren; Autumn Rose and Parker Lawrence. Bridget can be found on weekends at Deerfield Whole Foods, supervising the birthday cooking parties.

Her creative visions seem to have no end, from the Statue of Liberty done by Gidwitz residents to the Butterfly Project with Friend Center folks. In her spare time she takes painting classes at the Deerpath Art League in Lake Forest, and attends the Trinity Unity Church of Christ, where all are welcome. Bridget describes this as a lov-ing, supportive environment. We are truly blessed to have Bridget as part of our Weinberg Community family.

Meet Our Newest Staff Member

Ken Johnston

Director of Dining

Ken is the Manager of Dining Services , coming to the Weinberg Community several month ago, and initiated holding weekly meetings with Gidwitz residents to get their individual likes and dislikes, along with their suggestions. He has quickly become acquainted with the various personalities of residents and strives to make their dining experiences pleasant and gratifying.

Ken’s experience is impressive. He spent 2 1/2 years training at The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., next door to the home of FDR. He then worked at the Waldorf Astoria, Tavern on the Green in Central Park, and Win-dows in the Twin Towers. He comes to us from the James King Home in Evans-ton and was chef and manager of dining services at Condell. During his spare time Ken enjoys antiquing and gardening. When asked how he likes his position here so far, he enthusiastically responds “I love it!” Welcome, Ken!
