Literature’s badass women

female characters have stayed with me long after I have finished books that they are featured in. Maybe it’s because their struggles and triumphs are relatable as a woman myself, or maybe it’s due to the intimacy with which I have

come to know them. By no means are these books The Feminine Mystique (Betty Friedan) but these characters inspired change beyond their time, kicked ass, and made being a woman that much cooler. The books featuring these female protagonists have earned a special place on my bookshelf and with International Women’s Day just around the corner (8 March), I thought I’d roundup a few of my favourite literary heroines.

Nancy Drew

the Nancy Drew Mystery Stories were not strictly literature but one of the first fictional heroines I was

exposed to. The school library was always fully stocked of the series and I devoured them all. Nancy was a teenage girl, not much older than my friends and I, but not just your ordinary teenager. She was an amateur sleuth; devoted to solving crimes and getting herself into dangerous situations. I think Nancy inspired us all (including US Supreme Court justices) to pursue adventure, use logic and deductive reasoning and to have this great determination to succeed. Nancy was an independent, clever and witty woman who relied on her brains rather than sex appeal. This message was important in the 1930s when the stories first came to life, but still resonates with women today.

stieg Larson’s Lisbeth Salander heroine of the Millennium Series

is my favourite female protagonists in fiction. Lisbeth shuns all stereotypes and is a troubled, anti-social, black-clad, skinny version of (my other favourite superhero) Batman. The formidable Lisbeth takes on many roles: hacker, activist, criminal, vigilante and kicks the proverbial in each one. In the series Lisbeth is institutionalised, framed, beaten, raped and even buried alive. But she keeps coming back, unforgiving and determined, with one goal in mind: to protect other women from their male abusers. The success of Stieg Larson’s Millennium series is richly de-served due to its fierce and fearless avenger who survives and goes to brutal lengths in righting wrongs. For that, Lisbeth Salander is unforgettable and my favourite literary heroine.

if you have read Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy you would have

loved the feisty, charming and young heroine Lyra Belacqua (later becomes Lyra Silvertongue once she has defeated the King of the Polar Bears) who forcefully drives the plot forward. Lyra is a ballsy girl who is strong and uncompromising but also bright and compassionate as she sets out to rescue her friend Roger who is kidnapped by the Gobblers (General Oblation Board). She has an intense interest in learning about and exploring the world.Pullman created a heroine that eventually goes onto save the world.

Lyra is unafraid to question authority, is morally flawed making her more human and she rejects the identity and role society ascribed her. I loved reading the His Dark Materials trilogy when I was younger and would happily re-read it now as an adult.

it should come as no surprise that Harry Potter’s smartest wizard

friend has made the list. Hermione is classically heroic in that she is by Harry’s side along with Ron in fighting Voldemort. But she is no ordinary side-kick—far from it, Harry and Ron wouldn’t be able to get where they are or do the things they do, without relying on Hermione’s intellectual and emotional smarts. She holds her own in the Harry Potter series and even carries her two best friends through some dangerous situations. Hermione anticipates and prepares for every situation the trio may and do find themselves in, and even stands by Harry when Ron briefly abandons him. She casts complex spells and puts her feelings on hold (for Ron) and focuses on the task at hand: ensuring evil doesn’t prevail. Hermione is courageous and incisive with leadership qualities that we can all learn from, and one of my favourite characters from Harry Potter.

here was a woman who was witty, intelligent, brave, independent and

unafraid to speak her mind at a time in society where women were meek and obedient. She had strength of character, she did not adhere to the submissive role of women typical of that society and she did not care for the economic class difference, also typical of the 19th century. I think we can all draw inspiration from Jane Austen’s well-loved Elizabeth Bennet who will forever have a place on lists like this one!

in Sofia from The Colour Purple ,Alice Walker created a female character that broke away from traditional female roles. Sofia is

strong, sassy and doesn’t stand for any unfair treatment. Sofia is capable of doing physical hard labour, in fact better at doing it than Harpo who does not relish manual labour. She doesn’t find an equal in Harpo because he is unable to match her strength of character or even treat her as an individual. Sofia is far from the submissive wife Harpo wants her to be and when he tries to assert himself on her, she literally fights back and hurts him. She is a proud woman who refuses to be treated unfairly which leads to a long period of humiliation and suffering. But Sofia’s spirit remains unbroken. Sofia isn’t the only strong female character in The Colour Purple but she stood out to me because she is rebellious, brave enough to leave a husband who clearly doesn’t deserve her, and confronts the

social order of the racist community she is living in. Sofia inspires me today as much as she did when I first read Alice Walker’s masterpiece.

Foha Raza: Who, in a nutshell, is Nyla?Nyla Asghar: In a nutshell, I would say I am a perfectionist, which involves being very hands-on. I like to micro-manage everything which is why, sometimes, I over-stress. But, I guess that is where the perfection part comes in. I am very organised and very responsible. FR: That must be something that really helps you out with your work then?

NA: Absolutely. My personality speaks in my work when it comes to quality and finishes. I personally give a lot of attention to every piece that I make from production to end. that is the year we decided to move to Islamabad. And as my entire maternal family is in Lahore, I thought that I could go to NCA. But my mother wanted to keep me close to her. Also, at that time NCA’s hostel had a terrible repute so my parents weren’t very keen, which is where my art school dream was destroyed (Laughs). But after I got married, I joined NCA for interiors. And the same year I graduated, I did my first exhibition from home and that took off very well. FR: So, five things that no one knows about you. NA: I am a great chef. Only the people who have had my food know that about me. I design clothes for close family and friends only. I don’t do it commercially. I love dancing.I paint. I don’t know if this is something that is relevant but a lot of people don’t know my age. Nobody believes me when I tell them that I am turning 38.

While flipping through women’s magazines from

time to time one comes across articles or features like “What a Man Wants in a Woman”, or “Five Qualities Men Look for in the Lady of their Dreams”, or “What Drives them Insane” and so on and so forth. And while such lists for women are really lame with points such as, “a woman just wants a man who can treasure her” or “who makes her feel safe”, the “What a Man Looks For” list is usually more superficial (and hence, entertaining!). I love when men are surveyed about what they find most attractive about the opposite sex and almost always, some guy will say: “Hands— my girl must have beautiful hands!” Great, the one thing we cannot

fix with make up or plastic surgery. What if you’re just born with large, chubby hands—no amount of manicures is going to cure that! Are you then forsaken? However, this post is not about men’s lists. Rather, I thought that I would come up with my own superficial, highly frivolous, and completely subjective list of what women find (and don’t find) attractive in the opposite sex. So let us begin.

1. A man must have impeccable hygiene. See it’s really back to the basics for us girls. Good hygiene lays the foundation for anybody’s likeability. This means no tea stains on his teeth because he definitely brushes his teeth regularly with an electric toothbrush no less. If he flosses—that is an added bonus! All this then leads to

The author, affectionately referred to as Sunshine by her loved ones, recently moved to London from New York. She is enjoying settling in while discovering

baby is no longer an excuse!), parenting, decorating, and anything really that

tickles her fancy!

Orthodontic work can be expensive and hence, if the teeth are a bit askew it is unfair to have that as a requirement, but if a man is brushing his teeth regularly and visiting his dental hygienist every six months, a few crooked teeth here and there will not matter. We don’t ask for much. Of course, impeccable hygiene also means that a man should never have hair creeping out of um, unexpected places, like the nose or the ear. That is definitely not attractive. Attractive men

most definitely own nose trimmers. They also keep their

nails trimmed and do not have dirt under their fingernails. I personally think there is nothing wrong with a man getting a pedicure every so often.

3. A man who chooses to shave his head when faced with a receding hairline or hair loss shows decisiveness and courage, which is very attractive. A man who tries to hide his bald spots by combing over them with the little hair that he has left like Donald Trump or Nawaz Sharif, shows desperation and denial, and is a tad unattractive.

4. A man who talks too much is definitely not attractive. There is a reason Batman is the ultimate super hero for everybody. Nobody wants to hear a man yapping away about

his various achievements and endearing qualities. Let others do that for you. Meanwhile, you just sit back and remain your mysterious, brooding self, which is oh so attractive.

5. Women get a bad rap for being gold diggers. While I cannot deny that some may be in it for the Cha-ching, Cha-Ching, I think what is more common and plausible is that women are attracted to successful men.

Men who know what they want and work hard to get it and then are recognized for their hard work. Such men are dependable. Now if like Van Gogh some guy is only

recognized as successful posthumously, although extremely intuitive, women are not in fact clairvoyant, and hence, that is of no real use to anybody. Unless of course he leaves all his scribbles in his wife’s name, in which case… Cha Ching!

Monday Mondays can be depressing when

your weekend has been very happening. But this Monday was fun because I went to my village

for 2 days. One of us (brothers) has to go regularly to check

on our lands and our beautiful inherited Haveli. I love going

there in winter. Both days of my trip were devoted to detoxing!

I came back to the hectic life of Lahore, which I actually really

like.

TuesdayI was invited to Super Cinema for the premiere of Bachaana staring my favorite Sanam Saeed and Mohib Mirza. The movie was very entertaining with beautiful songs and it’s a must watch. I met lots of my friends there, had a great time watching the movie with all the who’s who of Lahore! It feels great thinking about how far the Pakistani cinema has come!

WednesdaySometimes you just want to relax, chill and let the social scene take a break. So when I’m relaxing I think a lot about my mother as she has always been my inspiration. She always had flowers in the house,

dressed beautifully with gorgeous shoes, antique shawls and a dupatta on her head. We had a formal way of life where dinner was served on the table with wonderful linen, silver cutlery, starched napkins and food was served in fine bone china. My parents’ lifestyle reflects in the way I live and

how my wife runs the house.

FridayThe most interesting day of the week is always the one when I’m styling a wedding event and I give my 100 percent to it. We love producing beautiful wed-dings. A lot of time, thought, creativity, effort and detail goes into every element. We often get asked which of our wed-dings is our favorite one. But it is like choosing between your children; you just can’t. Each and every one of our weddings has been unique and special.

SundayFestivals are always very interesting and full of fun. They

remind me of my childhood and the times when I used to go with my mother and friends to Bahbud in Islamabad. And so I really enjoyed going to the Festival of Life which my gorgeous friend Sara Shahid had organized for Shaukat Khanum. At the event, I met some amazing people like Rabia Butt, Amina Raja, Ali Azmat & his wife Fariha Ali and many more. I was very happy to see that so many people were participating in such a great cause. I salute all the people who are out there and working for different charities and helping society in such a big way.

ThursdayMy friend Nadya Malik, the supermodel,

is currently in town for her much awaited lawn campaign with my favorite designer

Faraz Manan. I called her and we went out for coffee. We had a lot of fun talking

and bonding. She got married in 2006 and I was the lucky person who designed

all her wedding events. All 3 events were beautiful and not because I had organized it, but because a beautiful

person was getting married. What I enjoyed the most was the marriage

ceremony at the beautiful Lahore Cathedral. It is a beautiful church and I always wanted to do a wedding there. Thank you Nado for fulfilling my wish!

SaturdayThe Celebrity Lounge shoot with two talented fashion personalities Cybil Chaudhry and Asimyar Tiwana at the Ather Shahzad Studio was very interesting. The theme was all black and both looked absolutely glamorous in Rani Emaan couture and an Armani suit. The concept of the shoot was for the promotion of the show on social media but before it went viral I wanted to share this with my readers!

We love ourselves an outfit that doesn’t look

over thought, is occasion appropriate and stylish at the same time. Enter Arjumand in a cool T, sweats and that

waterfall jacket.

It’s impossibly hard to pull off dungarees in this town, but we think Natasha Monnoo

What is there not to love about Florence?

The epitome of a renaissance city, still vibing what we can call modern re-naissance energy. The city sleeps, breathes and feeds ART.

DittaArtingianale has the best corner in Florence, where it sits discreetly without attracting any superficial attention. You walk in through the tall industrial doors to find a hidden pleasure spot; brewing coffee, roasted beans, classic music, a relief to all your senses. You’ll see the baristas slowly pouring the magic into a cup, and you’ll know what to expect.

It offers an escape from the pizzas and pastas of Italy, with a refreshing menu of food and beverage, focusing on source and quality of the prod-ucts. You’ll find a variety of teas, and cocktails also. My favorite was the Fig Marmalade and French Toast with filter coffee. Yes, it serves specialty coffee, but after my experience I think it’s safe to say it offers specialty flavor and service also. You will not leave disappointed!

Given the immense pool of talent in our country it comes as no surprise

that the Red Bull Music Academy decided to make its first stop in Pakistan, this time in the cultural center of the nation ‘Lahore’. For the first time in the history of Pakistani music the Red Bull Music Academy, a global institution committed to fostering creativity in music, conducted an Info Session aimed at bringing the local music scene closer to the Academy. Hosted by the Academy team member Nick Dwyer in the sprawling metropolis of Lahore, the Info Session kicked-off at the famous Haveli Barood Khana with Dwyer sharing insights and forgotten tales from over a decade of being involved in Red Bull Music Academy’s worldwide activities. Local Academy alumni Tollcrane and Noahs Heark along with the musicians who had flown in to Lahore from different parts of the country to attend the Info Session were indeed the highlight of the event. The invited musicians took this opportunity to

understand the Academy and its Application Stage better from Nick Dwyer and the local alumni (Tollcrane and Noahs Heark) who have had the great honor of representing Pakistan at the prestigious Red Bull Music Academy Session; Tollcrane Tokyo Session 2014 and Noahs Heark Paris Session 2015. “It was indeed an interesting session” said Daniel Panjwaneey who is popularly known as Alien Panda Jury. “Nick Dwyer helped us understand the Application Stage better and further motivated us (musicians) to apply. We should definitely have more Red Bull Music Academy Info Sessions in Pakistan” further added the young musician from Karachi.Another musician ‘Danish Lochner’ found the Session to be very informative, he said “The Session gave us a detailed overview of the Red Bull Music Academy and its Application Stage. Not only this but also answered our queries and presented a clear picture about the Academy. After the

attending the session all I can say is that one should definitely apply for this once in a lifetime experience!” Each of the musicians at the Session was given the opportunity to introduce themselves and showcase their style of music to all those present. Nick Dwyer was excited to share that good collaborations are expected between the musicians but most importantly the Info Session aims to lead these young artists to learn more about the Academy. ‘If you are in anyway involved in making music than you should apply for it and hopefully we will see another promising artist representing Pakistan at the Red Bull Music Academy Session in Montreal this year,’ he said with a confident smile. The Red Bull Music Academy Info Session ended with a promise to return with another exciting session in a different city of Pakistan. Also, with a hope to see a fifth Pakistani participant at this year’s Red Bull Music Academy Session in Montreal due to take place later this year.
