In the land of Israel, during the Temple era, every farmer would take the first fruits of a tree to Jerusalem and give it to the priest, the kohen, standing next to the altar. This mitzvah, called bikkurim, was an expression of gratitude to G‑d for the abundant produce and the opportu-nity to live in the land of Israel. But, in addition to handing the fruit to the priest, the farmer was obligated to make a verbal declaration. This statement was a short summary of Jewish history from the times of Jacob until the con-quest of the land of Israel. The declaration empha-

sizes G‑d’s kindness and the miracles that affected our des-tiny. While it is true that actions speak louder than words, there is an element of appre-ciation that is expressed more by our words than our deeds. Actions express dedication and commitment, but cannot convey warmth and emotion. When you give a gift to a friend as thanks for a favor, a well-written card strengthens the connection and generates more closeness than the gift itself. As parents, spouses or friends, it is not sufficient to just do things for another per-son. Our love and care must be articulated with warmth and affection. We cannot ap-preciate a kindness done to

us in our hearts only; we must express it with words of ac-knowledgement and thanks. Strong communication fuels the relationship and keeps the spark alive. Tell those close to you how much you appreciate them every day. Set aside a few minutes to pray and thank G‑-d for all of His blessings. -adapted from www.chabad.org

Happy Birthday, Universe Every year, our sages taught, with the cry of the shofar the entire universe is reborn. And so, at that time, with our resolutions and our prayers, we hold an awesome power: To determine what sort of child this newborn year shall be—how it will take its first breaths, how it will struggle to

its feet and how it will carry us through life for the twelve months to come. In truth, it is not only once a year: At every new moon, in a smaller way, all life is renewed again. And so too, every morning, we are all reborn from a nighttime taste of death. And at every moment—in the smallest increment of time—every

particle of the universe is projected into being out of absolute nothing-ness, as it was at the very begin-ning. Which is why there is always hope. Because at every moment, life is born anew. And we are the mas-ters of how this moment will be born. By Tzvi Freeman

Moses continues his talk to the Jewish people, he reminds them that when they enter the Holy Land they will have to bring bikkurim, the first produce of their fields and orchards, to the Holy Temple, and there they should thank G‑d for all the good He does and has done for them. This week’s Torah portion men-tions the mitzvot of the tithes which must be given to the Levites as well as to poor people. Moses reminds the Jew-ish people that they are G‑d’s chosen people and that they too chose Him as their G‑d. The portion continues with a list of blessings which G‑d will re-ward the people with when they follow the Torah’s laws, and then the “tochachah,” which means

“rebuke,” which includes a list of not good things that will happen if they abandon the Torah and G‑d’s com-mandments. This week’s Torah portion ends with

another reminder to follow G‑d’s commandments

Directions: 1. In a large bowl whisk together flour, baking

powder, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, salt and allspice. Make a well in the center and add the rest of the ingredients. Using a strong wire whisk or an electric beater on low speed, mix until you get a thick, smooth batter.

2. Pour batter into well-greased pans. This recipe makes quite a lot of batter, so depending on the size pans you use, you may have some left over. You can pour the leftover batter into another pan, or into a cupcake tin and make some honey

cupcakes. 3. Bake at 350° F until a skewer comes out clean, approximately 50–60 minutes for a bundt pan. Oven temperatures vary tremen-dously, and the type of pan you use also influences baking time, so do the toothpick test rather than relying on the clock.
