WEEKLY CITY NEWS Amalgamation – what it means for you Support for our fight to save the City of Ryde from being split in two is gathering momentum. I have written to every resident and ratepayer outlining the Council’s case against this devastating proposal that would see the City of Ryde wiped off the map, the community split and your voice on local matters lost. This drastic proposal (no other local council area is targeted in this way) completely disregards our proud history, unique identity and strong financial performance. It is also at odds with what you, the residents, have told us - that you ‘love living in Ryde’. But, if Ryde is split and absorbed into two mega-councils (of 558,000+ people to the west and 365,000+ to the north), I have absolutely no doubt that rates will significantly increase, services will be cut, customer service levels will drop and your local voice will be drowned out. In other words the ‘local’ will disappear from ‘local government’. We currently have a population of around 105,000 people living in 16 harmonious, co-existing suburbs. You are represented by a group of 12 Councillors who you can speak to directly about local matters. These Councillors are residents, just like you, with understanding and experience only a local can have. We also have a team of dedicated staff whose knowledge about the area and Council procedures enable them to respond quickly and efficiently to the vast majority of enquiries at the first point of contact. Again, that’s what ‘local’ means. Our alternative proposal to the State Government is to explore the formation of a joint ‘regional’ organisation of neighbouring councils. This regional alignment would see the City of Ryde not only retain its identity, voice and history, but partner more closely with neighbouring councils to our north and east in a way that would address the State Government’s criteria of size and strategic capability and demonstrate that both the City of Ryde and the region under this model are sustainable and Fit for the Future. In coming weeks you will be invited to be part of an informed community debate to discuss the positive and negative impacts of such an alignment to ensure that the City of Ryde is in control of its future. If you would like more information on this important matter, please visit Council’s website: www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/fitforthefuture or call our Customer Service Centre on 9952 8222.
