WINTERWINTER Clean UpClean UpSPECIALSPECIAL It’s this Moment

Comes a time on Christmas Eve

When all the gifts are bought

And wrapped and tied with shiney

Bows and placed beneath the tree.

Shops are closed,

locked up tight.

Even merchants hurry home

On this enchanted night.

A glass of wine perhaps a kiss

Beneath the mistletoe.

Evening fades as night begins

And children dream of gifts.

Late that night stillness comes

Magic spills over the land

As every creature of the earth

Feels the promise of The Son.

Humblest home and greatest hall

Are wrapped in a mother’s love.

It’s this moment I hold most dear

When peace fi lls the hearts of all.

Merry Christmas Everyone!

For serious shoppers and hardcore bargain hunters, bat-tling the crowds and enduring the endless lines on Black Fri-day are simply traditions that usher in the holiday shopping season. For the rest of us, the idea of rising at 3 a.m. on the morning after Thanksgiv-ing and heading out into the night to compete for gifts and assorted holiday goods with thousands of zealous consum-ers is nothing short of a night-mare. But for the truly squea-mish, whose goal is to avoid even the hint of a crowd, there are indeed ways to pur-chase every gift on your list without encountering hordes of holiday shoppers.

The most obvious strategy for avoiding the masses is to shop online. According to surveys conducted by public opinion pollsters Rasmussen Reports and BIGresearch, in 2010 nearly 64 percent of American adults did at least a portion of their shopping on the Web. Increasingly, people of all ages are opting to shop

Holiday shopping minus the crowdsonline not only to fi nd better prices, but because purchas-ing via the Internet is conve-nient, fast and enables con-sumers to perform quick and accurate product and price comparisons. And with so many online retailers offering free shipping during the holi-day season, many consumers see little reason to step inside a brick-and-mortar establish-ment.

However, even diehard e-shoppers recognize that there is something to be said for choosing a gift on site and in person; for taking the time to see and touch an object to determine its suitability. Whether you’re heading out in search of a dazzling dia-mond or a set of new dish-towels, here are some tips for avoiding shopping crowds:

* Shop all year round. It’s harder to sidestep the throngs of holiday shoppers during the peak season between Oc-tober and late December. By picking up gifts throughout the year, you can take advan-

tage of sales and avoid full parking lots and long lines. What’s more, year-round holiday shopping means that your gift budget gets spread out over the course of an entire year rather than a few short months.

* Shop when the crowds are elsewhere. The busiest holi-day shopping periods are in the late afternoon or early evening and, of course, on weekends. If you can shop at lunchtime or take a few hours off during the workday, chances are good that stores will be far less crowded. Oth-er good times to shop are dur-ing popular televised sporting events or television shows.

* Shop with purpose. If you know what you’re shopping for and have a good idea where to get it, there’s a great-er likelihood that you can get in and out of the store quickly -- and without blowing your budget on unnecessary items that catch your eye.

* Ship through an online re-tailer. Billing address and the shipping address are two dif-ferent categories when buying from an online retailer, and holiday shoppers should take advantage of a retailer’s will-ingness to package and ship gifts for you. Many online retailers will even gift-wrap items for you and include a personal note as well.

* Protect the gift. For those

who won’t be using an online retailer, be sure to protect the gift, especially if it’s fragile. Use bubble cushioning and packing peanuts when send-ing fragile items through the mail. If sending multiple items, wrap each item tightly in bubble cushioning but leave some space between the items for peanuts.

* Carefully pack perishables. When sending perishable

items, always send them via next-day delivery and never ship them near the end of the week, such as a Friday or Saturday. Items shipped on Friday and Saturday should be able to withstand a few days of being in transit. But when sending cheeses, fruits or any other perishable items, it’s best to do so early in the week and choose next-day delivery.

Shipping gifts more than just timing

People shopping for toys and presents this holiday season who are also trying to be conscientious of buying American or Canadian may want to pay more attention to the items they are getting. According to research by the U.S. Census Bureau, for the 2010 holiday season, $5.1 billion in toy imports originated in China. China was the leading country of origin for stuffed toys coming into North American ports, as well as for a number of other popular holiday gifts. These include roller skates ($37 million), sports footwear ($218 million) and basketballs ($32 million). China also is the leading supplier of ice skates, with Thailand and Canada ranking second and third for manufacture. Artifi cial Christmas trees and decoration are also big business for China. The U.S. imported $488.5 million worth of Christmas tree ornaments from the country last year and $28.2 million worth of artifi cial trees. There are some locally made toys, however. The U.S. has over 700 locations that make everything from games to dolls to children’s vehicles. California leads the nation with the most domestic toy/game production locations.

Imported holiday gifts

Over the last few years, daily deal sites have grown enor-mously in both popularity and membership. The largest of these sites -- Groupon, Living Social, Woot and Eversave -- are all expected to draw large crowds of virtual shoppers on the hunt for gift deals this holiday season. These deal-of-the-day Web sites and the many others that have sprung up recently offer consum-ers opportunities to purchase deeply discounted gift certifi -cates that can be redeemed at both local or national compa-nies. And with so many con-sumers still on the lookout for savings this holiday season, daily deal sites are an attrac-tive source for great gifts on a tight budget.

Typical deals offer 50 per-cent off the retail price of the goods or services and become valid once the number of deals purchased reaches a predeter-mined threshold. Registration is free and the daily deal offers for everything from food, fi t-ness and fashion items to salon services, sporting events and weekend getaways are deliv-ered via e-mail and localized to each user’s market area.

For those consumers who want the best shot at deals offered on multiple sites, but don’t want to spend hours reading multiple e-mail offers, PriceGrabber has launched deals.pricegrabber.com, a one-stop shopping site that allows users to look through hundreds of deals offered by more than 20 daily deal Web sites via a single e-mail each day. Other deal aggregators -- sites that gather information on deals offered by multiple companies--include Dealery, Dealnews and Yipit.

Giving daily deals as gifts generally works two ways. The purchaser either presents the gift certifi cate itself or uses the deal to purchase the actual gift item. Either way, there are

Daily deals make great holiday gifts

few, if any, drawbacks to daily deal shopping, particularly if you have access to multiple sites in one daily e-mail. There are only two things to keep in mind when purchasing daily deal vouchers as gifts:

Note the expiration date. Most daily deal certifi cates have an expiration date, which is often one year from the date of pur-chase. Especially when pur-chasing activities, accommo-dations or services, make sure that the person receiving the gift will be able to use it with-

in the specifi ed timeframe.

Read the offer carefully, in-cluding the fi ne print. Some offers come with conditions. For example, a yoga studio or hair salon might limit the use of the vouchers to new cus-tomers or specify that the deal can only be used for particu-lar classes or stylists. In most cases, however, daily deals are straightforward and don’t require more than one read to decipher.

“It has been a pleasure serving the Clifton Park and Halfmoon communities — and beyond! — for over twenty- ve years. Each year we are welcomed into your homes bringing homemade homebaked goodness and orchard-fresh apples,” says Diane Lindsey of Lindsey’s Country Store.

The purchase of the orchard by Jim and Jeanne Lindsey in 1970 began a family tradition that is being carried on to the third genera-tion. Lindsey’s Idyllwood Orchards, 267 Sugar Hill Road in Rexford, was the very rst “Pick-Your-Own” apple orchard in the area. They offer over 40 varieties of apples and farm-grown vegetables at the orchard and the country store. About 8,000 gallons of apple cider are produced annually at their cider mill, in small amounts and is UV-treated to maintain freshness.

Lindsey’s Country Store began as a seasonal apple store that grew as then teen-daughter Diane began to formulate her muf n recipes. Customers requested more, the store grew and the Signature Custom Muf n Gift Baskets were created. Now there are 48 avors of muf ns baked fresh everyday. Additionally many baked goods and 27 avors of pies are offered.

Lindsey’s Country Store is open year around and offers their muf n baskets, pastry platters, pies, baked goods, apple cider donuts, apple cider and a variety of gifts and greeting cards. They work with personal and corporate accounts, deliver locally and ship within the US.

Great gifts are great for a multi-tude of reasons, but bad gifts tend to have a lot in common. The worst gifts are not only a poor fi t with the recipient’s personality, lifestyle or interests, but also send a negative or critical message. Just plain bad gifts tend to fall into three categories: The useless, the thoughtless and the tasteless. And while the lists of awful items for men and women may be different, they nevertheless fall into one of these diagnostic categories.

If you’re considering purchasing gifts in any of the following four categories for the man or men in your life, think again.

Clothing: While this sounds in-nocent enough, when the clothes don’t match a man’s style, it can be construed as a suggestion that you don’t like what he wears or want him to up his fashion game. If you don’t have a clue about what the men in your life actually like and will wear, make another choice.

Household bric-a-brac or deco-

Gifts from bad to worstrative elements: Items in this cat-egory include everything from a new dish rack to artsy decor items. Such items might send a negative message similar to new clothes, and many men are territorial about their homes and resist outside (i.e., female) advice on decorating. So unless you know exactly what he wants or needs, go back to the drawing board.

Sentimental items: What a woman might call “sweet,” a man might want to store in the trash can. If you’re tempted to get your husband or boyfriend that cute teddy bear that reminds you of him, or fl annel

pajamas printed with those same teddy bears, forget it. And forget the book of syrupy love poetry, ro-mantic movies or T-shirts with sap-py sayings. He’ll be glad you did.

Psychology or self-help materials in any form or format: This is per-haps the biggest no-no of them all and sends the biggest “You’re not okay” message. So if you’re tempt-ed to buy your guy a book about improving communication skills, fi nding a better job or making better use of time, don’t. Enough said.

When gifting women, me should also avoid certain gifts.

Appliances: For most women, household appliances fall under the heading of “need” rather than “want,” unless it is a specialty item that you’re certain she has been yearning for.

Lingerie: The principle here is sim-ilar to why clothes are a bad idea for guys, but can lead to far more disastrous outcomes. Many men don’t realize that a gift of lingerie is often accompanied by an unin-tended message. If it’s too small,

she needs to lose weight. If it’s too big, you think she’s fat. If it’s too racy, you don’t think she’s sexy. And if it’s too plain, you don’t think she’s sexy.

Simply stated, unless you know the exact size and type of lingerie she favors or want to ruin any chances of peace on earth during your holi-

day season, move on.

Jewelry: Here again, unless you know exactly what the woman in your life wants, skip it. Not only is jewelry something that women pre-fer to choose for themselves, it can send a message (i.e., overly roman-tic or not romantic enough) that men don’t realize they’re sending.

Gym membership/fi tness equip-

ment: The big no-no. Under no

circumstances is it wise to present

the woman in your life with a gift

whose underlying message is “Lose

weight” or “Shape up.” The all-time

worst gift for women? A bathroom

scale. GG11B304

EYES ON HEALTH

DRY EYES (continued) If you think you have dry eyes, with symptoms such as foreign body sensations, redness, fatigue, or uncom-fortable contact lenses, talk to your eye doctor. Depend-ing on the severity of your dry eye symptoms, you and your doctor will devise a plan of action together. Here are some strategies that can help:- TAKE BREAKS and BLINK while reading or work-ing at a computer.- ADD WATER: Use a humidi er if the air is dry, and drink plenty of water to hydrate from the inside out.- AVOID EXPOSURE to eye irritants such as cigarette smoke and other forms of pollution.- Use over-the-counter ARTIFICIAL TEARS (liquid or gel), preferably preservative-free, as recommended by your doctor.- PRESCRIPTION THERAPIES: Talk to your eye doctor about available treatment options that may be right for you.

Defi ning black iceTraffi c reports often make mention of black ice during the colder weather. It can certainly sound ominous, and it’s often very dangerous. But what exactly is black ice?

Black ice is a thin coating of ice that forms on roadways and other surfaces. It often occurs from freezing drizzle, wind-blown snow or freezing condensation. Because black ice is so thin, the ice appears to be the same color of the sur-face material beneath the ice. Therefore, on asphalt roads, the ice can be nearly invisible and black in color -- hence the name. Unlike snow or ice that is readily visible, black ice is very hard to see, which makes it very dangerous for motor-ists.

Drivers should treat wet-look-ing roads with caution during the cold weather. What may appear to be water is often black ice. Traction is limited on ice, so spinouts and acci-dents may occur if the driver is not careful.

Many people mistakenly as-sume that New Year’s Eve is the holiday responsible for the most drunk-driving acci-dents. Although champagne and other alcoholic drinks are often free-fl owing on De-cember 31, New Year’s Eve holds a distant second place to Thanksgiving for the most drunk driving-related fatali-ties. This is perhaps because Thanksgiving is a family hol-iday, and many people often feel pressure to drink more when family are around to have a good time.

Rotary Club Christmas Tree SaleBALLSTON SPA – For more than 40 years the Ballston Spa Rotary Club’s main fundraiser has been selling quality Christmas trees. Tree sales will be held in the Curtis Lumber parking lot on Route 67 in Ballston Spa. Trees are sold daily from 10am-8pm. Dark green, long lasting, and fragrant, all trees are the very desirable Balsam Fir. The attractively shaped trees range in height from 6 ½ feet to 8 ½ feet and are priced at $40 or $45 each. There are also a limited number of taller trees, which are priced higher. Staffed with volunteers and sup-ported by local businesses, proceeds from the tree sales are donated throughout the year to local non-profi t organizations supporting those in need in our local community, and international projects promoting good will. This year the Ballston Spa Rotary Club will also be selling the “Rotarian Flavors of the World Cookbook”.
