As we Govites know, Gove has a massive social media presence and nothing happens

unless it’s on the "Gove Notice Board". If bread goes up 5c it’s on the board. If

someone gets bad service at a local restaurant - they name and shame... But

fortunately, they also speak up when they are pleased..

I was at this duty working but also as a volley with Shaun and Mal and it did look

pretty horrific - a 6 year old smashing into a stationary kart along the straight at

probably 60k's, then going flying out of his Kart - poor little fella …

Below is a summary of compliments that we received, which shows just how vocal our

Gove mob are, about anything at all really...

Thanks to Shaun and Mal (Vollies) who were on duty with me - it would have been a

nightmare without them, and the job showed how seamless the 2 arms of St John are

able to work together.

Please pass on my thanks to Mal, who was tagging along as an observer at the duty -

he was very helpful. With the amount of eyes on us from the crowd - he did a great

job to block it out and remain focused.

the Go Karts at Hidden Valley. Quiet night there as we

didn’t treat anyone but listened to the chaos at

Apology An apology for not putting out Vollie News last week,

but I do have a good excuse. On the Wednesday, I was

at Royal Darwin Hospital undergoing cataract surgery

in my right eye. I won’t burble on about this life

changing procedure, but I am still amazed at just how

bright and clear and colourful my world has become.

Now for the other eye …

Paramedic “Barbie & Ken” Dolls – Brian Ch’ng

Photos from the Paramedics Australasia Conference in

Canberra which I attended in late October. Here we see

barbie dolls which were shown off at the gala dinner as a

bit of a joke.

The punch line was “sick of all those fire fighter and

police toys and no paramedic ones … well, introducing

BLS Barbie and K.E.D. Ken”

Hoax emails

While researching material for this week’s newsletter

I came across reference to “cough CPR” on a St John

Ambulance UK Facebook page. Having received and

deleted this rubbish email some time ago, I refreshed

my memory by looking it up on the Hoax Slayer

website. This is what they had to say:

Subject: IMPORTANT read this! Cough CPR

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this mail

sends it to 10 people, you can bet that we'll save at

least one life.

Read this... It could save your life!! Let's say it's

6.15 pm and you're driving home (alone of course),

after an unusually hard day on the job. You're

really tired, upset and frustrated. Suddenly you

start experiencing severe pain in your chest that

starts to radiate out into your arm and up into your

jaw. You are only about five miles from the

hospital nearest your home. Unfortunately, you

don't know if you'll be able to make it that far. You

have been trained in CPR, but the guy that taught

the course did not tell you how to perform it on

yourself.

HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE

Since many people are alone when they suffer a

heart attack, without help, the person whose heart

is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint,

has only about 10 seconds left before losing

consciousness. However, these victims can help

themselves by coughing repeatedly and very

vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before

each cough, and the cough must be deep and

prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep

inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be

repeated about every two seconds without let-up

until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be

beating normally again. Deep breaths get oxygen

into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze

the heart and keep the blood circulating. The

squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it

regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack

victims can get to a hospital. Tell as many other

people as possible about this. It could save their

lives!!

Hoax Slayer gives a detailed analysis of this very bad

advice, which they sum up as:

The information in the message is in no way condoned

or recommended by medical authorities. Spreading

such misinformation is counterproductive and

potentially dangerous. Using the procedure outlined in

the message in place of immediately seeking medical

help could actually cost a life rather than save it.

http://www.hoax-slayer.com/survive-heart-

attack.html

Some of the comments in the UK Facebook thread:

NP: Experiencing chest pain? Grab your pogo-stick,

and Hop For Your Life! The up-and-down motion has

been proven by Doctors to provide enough energy to

your heart to sustain you until you have bounced to

the local Emergency Department.

MC: I think you'll find that the medically approved

technique is to punch yourself repeatedly in the chest

at a rate of 100 bpm. You should also carry a bicycle

pump with you at all times so that every 30 punches,

you can deliver two pumps of air to your mouth.

MC: (For the one poor misguided soul who I know is

sitting at their computer taking notes, we're NOT

being serious.)

Sidenote: is it theoretically possible for someone to

give themselves a precordial thump before they lose

consciousness?

PM: Other sidenote: Best deliver the self-punch to the

face and die in unconscious peace.

DM: … how would they know they were having a

cardiac arrest until they lost consciousness?

MC: Theoretically as they're on the brink of blacking

out? Alternatively they could position themselves

such that something would deliver the impact as they

lose consciousness...I have a small contraption in

mind involving a curtain rail, some string and a large

bag of flour.

SM: … are you part of SJA's R&D Department? If so I

would also like to join in developing that contraption.

This week in history: 31 October – 6 November

Northern Territory News – Friday 6 November 1959 St. John snag on subsidy

The Darwin branch of the St John Ambulance Brigade has struck a snag in its application for a building subsidy.

The building site at Parap is in the name of the Adelaide (headquarters) brigade.

Under subsidy regulations no grant can be made to a body with holdings in other states.

The Darwin branch has written to its Adelaide headquarters for title to the land.

The Darwin brigade is believed to be seeking an £1800 subsidy. Already it has over £2000 in hand.

Brigade officers attend sporting meetings and conduct children’s first aid classes.

Centralian Advocate – 4 November 1960

STRETCHER FOR FIRST AIDERS

A portable stretcher has been donated to the

newly formed Alice Springs St. John Ambulance

Brigade by the Northern Territory Medical Service.

Dr. C. Webb, Director of Health for the Northern

Territory was responsible for the gift.

It is the first piece of equipment acquired by the

Brigade so far.

Twenty four persons, including four children,

attended the Brigade’s first instructional evening in

the St. John Hall on Monday night. It was an increase

of eight on the inaugural meeting a week previously.

Dr Iceton, the honorary surgeon, lectured on

anatomy and certificated men Reg Priest, Stan Carn

and Ron Shepherd assisted in the demonstration of

primary bandage slings.

Northern Territory News – Wed 6 November 1968

St. John chief promoted

Mr Morris Setton, divisional officer of the St John

Ambulance Brigade, Darwin, has been promoted to

superintendent.

This was announced yesterday by the Deputy

Commissioner of the St John Ambulance Brigade in

the Northern Territory, Dr. W.A. Langsford.

Mr Setton replaces Mr Barrie Fricker, who is

transferring to reserve officers.

Dr. Langsford said Mr Fricker’s transfer would

enable him to devote more time to training activities

for which there was a growing demand.

He has had a wide experience in training and was

for a time associated with the training branch of the

order, the St John Ambulance Association in Victoria.

Northern Territory News – Thursday 4 November 1976

Long service recognition

Deputy Commissioner of the St John Ambulance

Brigade in the NT, Dr Colin Mills, last night presented

long service medals to Training Officer, Mr T. Stal (left)

and Corps Staff Officer (Cadets) Mr Grant Keetley. Mr

Keetley came up through cadet ranks and was

superintendent of the Darwin Combined Cadet

Division from 1963-1973. He is the first Territorian to

receive a long service medal. Most of Mr Stal’s 12

years of service was in Adelaide.

Litchfield Times – Thursday 31 October 1985 PARACHUTE JUMP FOR 50TH BIRTHDAY

Last Saturday, 26 October, family and friends of

Humpty Doo resident, Brian Maden weren’t too sure

if they would be celebrating Brian’s 50th birthday or

taking part in a ‘wake’.

To celebrate his 50th, Brian made a parachute

jump over Batchelor. The jump was no trouble for

Brian who in past years, prior to getting married,

made numerous parachute jumps.

Brian gave up skydiving for insurance reasons

when he married his lovely wife, Joyce. In the days

before marriage, Brian had participated in champion-

ships held at Massachusetts, USA. He conducted his

own parachute club on King Island in Tasmania and

jumped regularly at Melbourne. Brian was Australia’s

‘accuracy champion’ in 1964.

These days, Brian is … a popular member of the

Palmerston and Rural Ambulance Brigade …

Contributions for Vollie News

It isn’t easy producing a weekly newsletter,

especially in times when contributions dry up and I

need to be inventive for material to fill the pages.

You can help by sending in your stories and photos

for publication. Stories can be about your Division’s

activities, public duties attended and just about

anything else you can think about. They can be fact,

fiction or good old fashioned BS – it doesn’t matter

so long as they are entertaining.

Contributions from interstate and international

members are especially welcome. We are very

interested in the greater St John Ambulance outside

the Northern Territory.

Please send in your photos as they enhance a story;

photos without stories are also wanted, but please

tell us something about them. Some photos speak

for themselves, but not all.

Photos should be full resolution, but not necessarily

top quality. I have photo enhancement software

(Adobe Photoshop and Corel PhotoImpact) that can

work wonders on less than perfect images. They

can’t work miracles, though.

The absolute deadline for contributions is 8.30 PM

Thursday, CST.

DON’T send contributions through third parties as

many do; they may not be passed on.

Please send contributions direct to:

[email protected] or

[email protected]
