60 Minutes segment includes Rotary's partnership with Gates Foundation to eradicate polio Rotary International News -- 4 October 2010

Rotary International's partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to eradicate polio was mentioned in a segment of the news program 60 Minutes, "Gates Foundation: Giving a Fortune Away," which aired 3 October. The news story focused on the work of Bill and Melinda Gates, through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, to improve education and maternal and child health, and to prevent deaths from AIDS, malaria, and polio. The video and transcript are available through CBS News. Rotary staff worked closely with the producers of 60 Minutes during the filming of the portion on polio. On 21 March, the 60 Minutes team filmed at a World Health Organization polio vaccine distribution center in Wazirabad, India. The crew followed India PolioPlus Committee Chair Deepak Kapur, Rotarians, and health workers through Sri Ram Colony, Karawal Nagar -- a densely populated area near Wazirabad -- to shoot polio immunization activities.. The Gates Foundation has awarded Rotary US$355 million in challenge grants to support immunization campaigns in developing countries, where polio continues to infect and paralyze children. As of 30 September, Rotarians have raised about $146 million for Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge -- Rotary's response to the Gates Foundation grants. Andrew Wright's club was so excited about their use of Twitter that they made two videos extolling its virtues, which they posted on YouTube. Wright, of the Rotary Club of Cary-Kildaire, Cary, North Carolina, USA, said the club uses the social networking site to contact Rotarians and Rotaractors all over the globe. But the really exciting part of it is being able to link up with other clubs on projects. "We asked the question would anyone be interested in partnering with our club on an international service project," Wright said. "Within minutes of asking that question, we had a positive response from a club in India. The opportunity could be huge for us." Wright's club is just one of many who have used social networking as a valuable tool. Rotary International now has a presence on several sites, including Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Twitter. As of 12 February, RI had 18,418 fans on its official Facebook page. Like many Rotarians, Todd Laurie, of the Rotary Club of University Hills, Denver, Colorado, found that demands from his professional life often took a toll on his ability to keep in touch with other members of his club.

"I was already fairly active on LinkedIn. When LinkedIn added the group dimension to their Web site, it felt like a great opportunity to find other Rotarians with whom I would be able to connect," he says. After searching the site for and recruiting other members who listed Rotary as one of their interests or activities, Laurie started several online discussions about member retention and club identity. Rotarians responded enthusiastically. "I was connected again!" exclaims Laurie. "And the ideas that were being shared were invaluable. So much information and so many ideas were quickly being communicated across the globe." In less than a year, Laurie's forum had attracted more than 1,500 Rotarians. Many were joining as a way to help them meet up during their travels, get involved with Rotary club projects and grants programs, and learn about guest speakers for their club meetings. The forum eventually formed the basis for RI's official LinkedIn group. Laurie says the best part of social networking is its ease and global appeal. "The almost real-time communications, the ease of finding and connecting with other Rotarians from around the world, the realization that Rotary really is this big and we are all part of the same Rotary family -- awesome."

New lottery e-mail scam Rotary International News - 15 October 2010

There are several e-mail scams that target Rotarians.

Please be aware of the following scams:

An e-mail scam regarding a promotional prize awarded by a fake department at The Rotary Foundation has emerged. The sender, who claims to be the manager of a Promotions/Prize department, informs recipients that they won a lottery promotion, with a lump sum payout of US$1 million. The e-mail gives out a reference number of LP/26510037/10. The sender uses the name Jerry J. Blake.

A scam regarding employment opportunities at Rotary International has emerged on Craigslist. Please be aware: any and all job listings asking to contact a "HR Manager Charles Baldwin" are fraudulent and are NOT related to RI career opportunities. Please look out for the scammer's Yahoo messenger ID: charlesbaldwin2008, as well as, any e-mail coming from the address of hr@eaglescomputers.com. The e-mail scam reads: Hello, The entire board and members of The Rotary Foundation wishes to inform you that your resume has been received and we find you qualified for the job. An interview will be conducted online and that would be the final process regarding this job. This is a work-from-home job offer from Rotary International NB:You are requested to download and set up a Yahoo Instant Messenger Account (http://www.messenger.yahoo.com ) and add the online HR Manager Mr Charles Baldwin on his yahoo i.d charlesbaldwin2008. A request via e-mail for a $5 donation to list your Interact club on a Web site. This Web site is not affiliated or in any way associated to Rotary International.

Rotary International does not solicit funds through e-mail, nor does it ask that personal information be updated by e-mail or other electronic means. RI encourages Rotarians and Rotary clubs to avoid becoming victims of such scams by deleting any e-mail that appears suspicious.
