Learning Update - Follow us on twitter @egertoncpschool for learning updates and highlights from the classrooms. Reception Class have been busy learners this week! They have continued to show a love of stories by reading lots more Julia Donaldson stories including The Highway Rat! As the weather has improved, the children have been busy on some outdoor play adventures that included building boats and being creative with the den building resources. Our biggest success this week has been our first class assembly. The children were all superstars and we were very proud of their achievements so far in Reception Class. Year One has had a busy, busy week of new topics starting. In Maths, we have started to look at 3-D shapes, learning to recognise and name them and say what properties they have. In English, we have started to look at non-fiction texts and how they are different to fiction stories. We had our first lesson looking at The Beatles, and have loved listening to some of their songs. The children have loved going into our new music studio in class, playing instruments and writing their own songs.

Year Two have had a brilliant week of learning! Following on from World Book Day, the children have produced some creative collages of ‘The Land of Goodies’. They have used these to create some imaginative stories that showcased their much improved writing skills. In Maths, the children have consolidated their understanding of division and confidently used inverse. During ICT lessons, they have produced some posters showing how we can Stay Safe Online. In Science, the children have started to investigate what pants need to grow. A great week, Year Two! In English this week, Year Three have enjoyed sharing different examples of Greek myth stories. They have noted that many of the different Gods appear in more than one of the stories. In Maths, the children have been working on the Geometry skills, where they have been learning about different types of lines, including Parallel, Perpendicular, Horizontal and Vertical lines. The children have been thinking about the plants that they eat as part of their Science learning this week. They have grouped different fruits and vegetables according to what part of the plant that they would normally eat. In English this week, Year Four have been identifying the features of letters and looking at the use of possessive apostrophes. The children have enjoyed working with decimal numbers in maths, and they have worked diligently when calculating numbers to 2 decimal places. In our science topic electricity, we have been learning all about simple circuits and completed practical activities to consolidate our learning. The class showed excellent knowledge about castles in history, and they were able to articulate why castles were so important once the Normans had invaded England. Well done Year Four on another fantastic week of learning! This week in English, Year Five have been distinguishing between fact and opinion in different pieces of text including autobiographies. The children have then looked at using a variety subordinating conjunctions including ‘since’. They have explored how certain conjunctions can be used in a variety of ways. In Maths, the children have been using pictorial aids to help them begin to use short division. We have been extremely busy in Year Six this week. During English, we have been working on summarising pieces of texts

and we have begun our new novel, ‘When a Monster Calls’. In Mathematics, we have simplified fractions, and we have

compared and ordered fractions with different denominators. For our Ancient Egyptian topic, we have investigated the

importance of the three seasons in Ancient Egypt, the role each season played in the production and harvest of food, and

the effect the actions of the River Nile had on Egypt at that time.
