Kindergarten

Welcome back families!I hope everyone had a great Winter Break and that our Kindergarteners are ready to get back to learning! In reading, on Mondays, I will be sending home books for children to read at home every night. The books that I am sending out are the books that we will be working on for that week. It is very important that you are practicing reading with your children every night for at least 20 minutes. Also, I will be sending home sight words that children should be practicing at home. It is very helpful if you make flashcards out of the sight words as the children love to make it as a game to learn their words. On Fridays, we will check to see which words they have learn to send home a new list of words for the next week.

1st Grade

Welcome back families,For the next few weeks, in math, we will continue to practice with 10 groups as they begin performing simple addition with tens and ones. We will apply this knowledge to the real world by learning about coins. Later in our units we will be adding two-digit numbers.

In reading, we are learning about how authors write stories using characters, setting, and plots. We emphasize the learning of sight words I send home because it is a good way to build strong readers. Please continue to support your child in his or her education by emphasizing the need to be in school everyday and focus on their studies. Research has shown that absenteeism and negative attitudes towards learning have negative effects on the child’s overall well-being.\

Thanks for your cooperation in this.

Mrs. Perlas

In math, we are still working on addition, which most of our kindergarteners are doing great at. We have also started learning subtraction. The children have also been learning about 5-groups and now will be transitioning to learning tens in teen numbers.

It is very important to have your support and participation when it comes our children’s education. Please continue to encourage children to read and complete their homework every single night.

Also on Monday, January 28th, 2019 there will be the Quarter 2 Honors Assembly from 8:30-10:00 a.m. If you have any questions please feel free to ask!Thank you all,Ms. Gray

2nd Grade

Happy New Year 2nd Grade Families!

We are excited to have students back from Winter Break. Your scholars did an excellent job remembering our routines and expectations in their first week back. We will continue building on those expectations to continue pushing them to exceed their growth goals. We need your help in getting our students to that level. Please make sure that you are setting some time each night to work on the homework packets and read daily. Students should be bringing home several books each week. If they are not bringing anything home, remind them to clear out their book bags and take the paper copies home! Those books are theirs to keep. Please check on Class Dojo daily to track your student’s daily effort. When you reinforce Dojo at home, students respond positively. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me on Dojo.

Middle School ELA

Happy New Year! With the new year comes a new level of expectations and rigor in our middle school.

Students have been grouped differently this year, so please ask your student which group they belong to and ask to see a copy of their new block scheduling! Students in Groups 1 and 2 will be reading Bud, Not Buddy while continuing our dedication to informational reading and writing skills. Students in Group 3 will be reading Lyddie in connection to the historical fight for the rights of workers. Group 4 will be tackling To Kill a Mockingbird, along with a variety of nonfiction texts, in order to analyze what it means and what it takes to truly take a stand for something we believe in. Students will be much more likely to have homework, so make sure you are checking in with your student or connecting to our class through Google Classroom or ClassDojo for the most updated information.

I look forward to seeing all the growth in our students!Ms. Niki

Middle School Math

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday Break.

This new year I will be/have been increasing the amount of work students are expected to complete. Each time students come to my room for class they are given an immediate “Do Now” which they have only 10 minutes to complete, at the end of the time they must hand in whatever they have completed. We then move into “Math Sprints” where we work on skills such as multiplication or addition of fractions. Students have 1 minute to complete as much as they can. We go over the answers and students grade their own work, and then do another round. Students can note how their correct answers increased from the first round. This is not graded based on how much they get correct, but rather if they attempted the work to the best of their ability.

Afterwards, we move into our lesson for the day. Students are given a new packet each day, which they are expected to complete by their next math class. Each school day they are late with turning in their packets will result in a -10% for their maximum grade for that packets. (2 days late means the best grade they could receive is an 80% which is a low B). Of course I understand that things happen, and may prevent a student from being able to get work done. If this is the case I request confirmation from a guardian in the form of either an email, text, signed letter, or phone call.

I have been thoroughly impressed with the students’ dedication and hard work this year already. I look forward to seeing what our students can achieve this year.

If you have any questions/comments/concerns please feel free to reach out to me by either calling/texting/emailing me. (414-207-0997 or [email protected])

Project-Based Learning

Hello Lion Families!

I hope everyone had a refreshing break! Your middle school students certainly came back excited and ready to learn. We are exploring how the justice system works and how juries draw their conclusions by listening to the first season of Serial, the story of the murder of Hae Min Lee. As we follow along with the transcripts of the podcast, students are looking for evidence to support their theory of the case. Students will be having bi-weekly vocabulary quizzes (every other Wednesday) about words from the podcast. Look out for the homework packet!

If you have any questions or concerns do not hesitate to reach out to me at [email protected]
