Weekly Newsletter 11/21/2019 Weekly Newsletter 11/21/2019 November 21, 2019 Good Afternoon Smithville Warriors!! As many of you know the staff at S.H.S work very hard to provide a good experience each day. I am always looking for creative ways to share wonderful things about our staff! If you would like to share a shout out here here is a link where you may do so. I started my week off in a Restorative Practices Workshop, Monday and Tuesday. I am pleased to say that our high school is definitely moving in the right direction when it comes to the process of restorative practices. There are basically two goals for restorative practices which include: Building a caring community Repairing the community when there is harm done One of our main focuses here at Smithville High School is building strong relationships so that our students have a safe and inviting environment to learn. We do a great job with that but would love your feedback if you feel we can improve on that. Here Here is a link to provide feedback of any kind to help us live the “Better Together” theme. The second goal of repairing harm within our learning environment is what we are slowly integrating into our practices. The ultimate goal is to include students in this process with hands on involvement in school discipline, peer mediation and restorative conferencing. For now, we will continue to train the staff and bring in students for input and feedback while we learn ways to help repair the relationships that are harmed. I am excited to move forward with restorative practices and help our students work through the repairing process when an issue occurs. Here Here is an article that will share how restorative practices work for educators. As always, please try to implement our Character Strong Connection piece. This week it includes sharing what you are grateful for. This is a known strategy to help students with depression as well as anxiety. I have also included some articles to help identify when your teen might be showing signs of stress. Character Strong Connection: Character Strong Connection:

Lauren Milby-Palma: I overheard her in the hallway with a student. Her words were, "Okay, what canI do to help?" It was small but it spoke volumes to the student and reminded me how simple andeasy those words are - and how much it means to the students.

- Shirl Nichols: Shirl is building an awesome program for business students. They are learning such real-world skills. Recently, I heard some of her students in the hallway making business calls to connectlocal employers.

- Katy Minnix: Katy is doing an awesome job leading the freshmen Warrior Time. She is so organized, every week. She goes above and beyond her role, along with the Character Strong lesson she alsoincludes additional activit ies and resources that we can use to support the lesson. My students arebenefitt ing so much from it this year!

- Ryan McCluskey: I want to give a shout-out to Ryan McCluskey for making the teacher surveys thisyear. I know it likely took a lot of time. They were quick and easy to use in the classroom. I think thedata means so much more now that we can separate the surveys by block.

- Mitchell Kline: Mitchell Kline has a club that meets on Thursday after school in his classroom. If youhaven't walked by during this time you should, he has created a really awesome community for kidsto be a part of. It 's called Pair O Dice Game Club. On a Thursday afternoon/evening you can hearchatter, laughter, and all-around fun. His room is usually packed and kids every week.

- Petra: This is a few weeks late but Nugget Day was a hit with my students. Who knew 1 nuggetper kid would make them so happy! Thanks for all you do in coordinating leadership andstuco events.

- Debbie: Thanks for making coffee for everyone every single morning!

Thank you to Michelle Atkinson for greeting our students each morning as they enter the frontdoors.

Shout out to Jen Lee for helping clean some white boards in the foreign language area last Fridaywhen we were short handed. You rock!

Nurse VisitsNurse Visits

Our nurse, Debbie Wilmes, strives to keep all our students healthy here at the High School. To help her with this, please remind students that if they do not feel well throughout theday, they should go to the nurse BEFOREBEFORE calling or texting their parent. If a student is ill,we do not want them in the classroom potentially contaminating other students. The nursewill then take the students temperature and discuss the ailments and notifying parents ifneeded. You can contact nurse Debbie at 816.532.0405 or by email [email protected]
