Quite out of the blue they said, “Isn’t Easter meant to be a Christian festival? So, we’d like you to take over the City centre and we’ll give you all the support we can.” Imagine the church leader’s delight that the secular York authorities were actually asking them to celebrate the risen Christ in the public square. It was bit of a downer when the Council’s first suggestion was that they could have a parade of Easter bonnets - but as Christian and community leaders worked together, Easter Sunday afternoon has now become one of the high points of Gospel proclamation in the heart of York, culminating in outdoor baptisms by our Archbishop. Mention Easter to many people and the first thing that comes to mind is chocolate. 10% of annual chocolate sales in the UK take place over Easter. We’ve come a long way from the first chocolate Easter egg produced by Fry’s in 1873. New products have included chocolate versions of Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit and Scrabble. The most expensive chocolate egg was one laden with diamonds and costing a cool £50,000! It’s great to have fun at Easter and a good time for families to celebrate together. But it’s so much more than that. It’s all too easy to tame Easter and so tame Jesus. We tame his teaching, sanitise his death and can be embarrassed by his resurrection. Yet if the Easter events are true, then nothing can ever be the same again. The Easter bonnets in York became a parade of crowns to give people the message that they are VIPs. So very important that Jesus died and rose again for them. Tim Hurren (Interim Minister)

Taming Easter = Taming Jesus A decade ago churches in York were approached by the local council about putting on a big city centre event. Quite out of the blue they said, “Isn’t Easter meant to be a Christian festival? So, we’d like you to take over the City centre and we’ll give you all the support we can.” Imagine the church leader’s delight that the secular York authorities were actually asking them to celebrate the risen Christ in the public

square. It was bit of a downer when the Council’s first suggestion was that they could have a parade of Easter bonnets - but as Christian and community leaders worked together, Easter Sunday afternoon has now become one of the high points of Gospel proclamation in the heart of York,

culminating in outdoor baptisms by our Archbishop.

Say it with Flowers You can now mark a special occasion, such as an anniversary or birthday, by making a donation towards the flowers in Church. The St Peter’s Flower Team makes stunning floral displays throughout the year and is willing to make an arrangement on the pedestal to the left of the altar just for you. You will also receive a mention in the Weekly News. Please speak to Sue Heapy for further details (07540 355305)

Dates for your Diary

Thursday 7th April at 7:30 pm – the licensing of our new Vicar, the Revd Dr Alan Garrow. Everybody is encouraged to be there as we set out on this new phase in the life of St. Peter’s Church. Wine, soft drinks and canapés will be served after the service. Sunday 10th April will be Alan’s first Sunday as our vicar. Services will follow the usual pattern, but 4.30 Afternoon Church will be in the Brostoff Hall rather than in Church. This is

because we have a Faith Lunch for everybody at 12:00 pm after Matins – if you would like to contribute, please complete a slip from the back of Church, and then pop it in the box today!

Harrogate Fairtrade Shop The shop in the porch of St Peter’s is looking for volunteers who are able to run a regular two hour shift, once a week, once a fortnight or once a month. You don’t need to have worked in a shop before as you’ll be given training. If you think you can help please contact Vicky at [email protected]

Wellspring Therapy and Training - Gardener Wanted Wellspring is a Christian charity in Starbeck, Harrogate, which offers counselling to the community. We are currently looking for someone to look after our small, but beautiful, patio garden. The work would take no more than 2 hours per month. We are flexible regarding days and times, but you would need to bring your own gardening tools. If you are able to help out, please contact An on 01423 881881 or [email protected]

Helping Hands Are you able to spare an hour or two each Friday morning to join our band of cleaners who polish and clean the church ready for Sunday services? If so, do come along on Fridays at 10:00 am. We are a friendly bunch and enjoy a coffee and chat afterwards.

Our Sri Lankan Visitor Our parish is linked with St Paul’s Church, Kandy, in Sri Lanka, and one of their congregation, Mangala Solomon, visited Harrogate last weekend. She came to the 9:30 am Family Communion and very much enjoyed the service, especially the Palm Sunday Drama and the singing and playing of the Music Group. Then after a traditional Sunday lunch, we went to Ampleforth

Abbey and on Monday morning she had breakfast with the Breakfast Club, before travelling down to London to catch her flight back to Columbo. Mangala wanted me to pass on her thanks to everyone at St Peter’s, who she said made her feel so welcome and very special!

A Devil of a Time! Thanks to Tim Williamson for sending in this photo of the Drama Group’s presentation on Palm Sunday during the 9:30 service. The old devils (Ian and Terry) were discussing how to distract the human race from the true message of Easter with two new recruits (Emily and Maddie). In the end, it was decided a few fluffy chicks, some cute bunnies and chocolate eggs would do the trick! Mention also must be made of Noah’s accomplished performance as the donkey who carried Jesus into Jerusalem. Well done all!

At the 9:30 Service we offer prayer with laying on of hands. If you would like this ministry, please come up to receive the bread and wine (or a blessing) in St Mary’s Chapel and wait behind in the pews there.

Syrian Refugees – Update Harrogate Borough Council has committed to welcoming at least 50 people under the Syrian Vulnerable Persons scheme - there will be no single people or unaccompanied children. This number is based on the 20,000 people committed to by the Prime Minister before Christmas and the population of Harrogate. The Council has about 3,800 homes, but most of these are unsuitable for resettling refugees because of their size (they own a lot of one bedroom homes) or location. HBC will do their best to accommodate Syrian families, but might not have the number of homes needed. They also have a legal duty to house homeless families and to offer housing to people in extreme housing stress from their waiting list, so they cannot put forward every dwelling which becomes vacant. Consequently, HBC are appealing to private landlords in the Harrogate area to ask them to make available homes they own. They are looking for 2 and 3 bedroom houses and flats in the Harrogate area let at Local Housing Allowance rents for at least 12 months. To be clear, HBC are not looking for offers of temporary accommodation, e.g. spare rooms or short-term lets, but for self-contained homes that can be available for at least twelve months. The first refugee families are expected to arrive in June. If you are able to offer accommodation under this scheme or have any questions please contact Alan Jenks [email protected] or telephone: 01423 500 600 (ext 56849)

Next Sunday 3rd April is TICTAC Sunday – Tins In Church; Tins At Church. St Peter’s gives out food parcels every day to those in need. Please, when you do your shopping this week, remember to pick up an extra tin or two to bring to Church next week to put in the hamper.
