NEW DPS ENROLLMENT PROCESS FOR 2012‐13 SCHOOL YEAR
Denver Public School’s new SchoolChoice (http://schoolchoice.dpsk12.org) enrollment process will allow students to list
their top five preferences on one form, instead of having to complete separate applications for different types of
schools. All traditional, innovation, magnet and charter schools will offer SchoolChoice enrollment, beginning with the
January 2‐31, 2012 enrollment period. DPS is also hosting Regional Expo Events to give families the opportunity to learn
about the new SchoolChoice process as well as research elementary, middle and high school options. Learn more on
page 6.

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING IN THE LMC?
ALLAN CUTLER, Bromwell Teacher‐Librarian and Technology Teacher
[email protected] | 720‐424‐9365
The Library Media Center has been very busy with multi‐tasking/multi‐media projects, online math practice, an author's
visit, learning to use the library online database, and of course checking out great books!
5th Grade has been studying online safety, digital literacy, and "netizenship" (being a responsible online citizen). We are
using a curriculum from Common Sense Media and working with the district's Common Sense Media Representative to
master smart and safe online behaviors. Check out www.commonsense.org to see more.
4th grade has been going deep with a multimedia study about plate tectonics. This project expands upon the 4th grade
geology curriculum. Students are using web links that lead them to sources of information that they can skim and scan
for answers to questions about the history and science of plate tectonics. Ask them who Alfred Wegener was and more
for some insight below the surface of the earth. To go deeper, take a look at www.geology.com and click on plate
tectonics!
3rd Grade is getting spaced out with a compare and contrast study of the solar system. Using questions about the eight
recognized planets, studying the kidsastronomy.com website, and utilizing a graphic organizer software called
Inspiration, the 3rd grade astronomers are reading and recording planetary information like distance from the sun,
diameter, periods of rotation and revolution, known number of moons, and planetary surface! This project draws on
many learning skills and strategies taking kids to the boundaries of their abilities and beyond.
2nd Grade continues to master the use of LION (Library Information on the Net), our library database. They are learning
to look up books by keywords, subject, or author, find call numbers and availability, and locate books independently in
the library. The use of online information sources to access books is an essential skill for all 21st century students. They
are also mastering math skills with MathScore. If you haven't already, go with your child to
bromwell.co.mathscore.com and see what the score is!
1st Grade is using the graphic organizing software, Kidspiration, to show what they know about coin values, creating
equivalent values, and money math. This expands on the 1st grade curriculum and their study of money, math, and
making meaning of numbers. They are also beginning to use MathScore – check it out at: bromwell.co.mathscore.com.
We are also reviewing and building on word processing skills learned last year to get ready for more word processing.
Kindergarten got the year started by working through all the interactive phonetic and phonemic lessons on StarFall.com.
This has reinforced and introduced students to concepts about print that they will work with this year to become fluent
readers. We have just begun a new unit on the essential keyboard and typing the alphabet, called S.A.T.'s (Super
Alphabet Typing). This will lead to keyboard fluency, learning about punctuation, and beginning to use the tools of word
processing.
This week, local author, Helene Harris, met with students to talk about being an author and to read from her book, Pass
the Colors, Please. Her book focuses on using color in making healthy eating choices. It’s available for sale through the
library. Contact me if you would like to get a copy for home. 30% of the book sales will be donated to the library!

That’s a lot and I haven't mentioned activities like Everyday Math Games at www.emgames.com, ALL the students
working on MathScore, 5th graders using the new laptop cart to create podcasts and papers for their studies with Ms.
Duran and Ms. McKim, and kids loving to check out books every week! All the students are learning so many and much
needed skills for citizens of the 21st century, as well as developing a timeless love for a variety of types of literature.
Lastly, I could use some more volunteer help in the LMC shelving books at any and all times, but especially early in the
week. Contact me ([email protected]) if you’d like to help.
THANKS to those parents already helping! You are the best!
