STREETS OF SHAME
These are officially the most crime-ridden streets in the country… is your address in the top 10?The Source: The Sun.
The reason I picked this story is because it’s nearly entirely focused around the representation of regional and national identity. Living in one of the postcodes listed among this story immediately pegs you as a criminal. There’s not much to this story other than what the headline says. The list goes:
Ellison Street, Newcastle with 104 crimes
Heathcroft Rise, Leads with 166 crimes
Dyson Hall Drive, Liverpool with 111 crimes
Taplin Drive, Manchester with 158 crimes
Buchanan Drive, Sheffield with 143 crimes
Bache Hall Court, Chester with 113 crimes
Bentmead Grove, Birmingham with 84
Warden Street, Bristol with 79 crimes
Chevy Road, London with 244 crimes
Picton Place, Cardiff with 70 crimes.
The list is only comprised of residential areas, rather than big streets with crime hot spots such as nightclubs. I also find it slightly funny that one of the places on that list shares my surname. The most criminal neighbourhood in London looks surprisingly innocent. In my opinion, The Sun was wrong to post this article because it could affect employer’s decisions drastically. Imagine if you were going to hire someone but read this article the day before and their post code matched one of these. It could sway you away from a possibly very valuable worker over something they cannot control.
