Dear Parents

Term 3 is continuing to race by with a variety of events, experiences and opportunities at

Orange Public School.

In sport our school is still heavily involved in the later stages

of the PSSA Team Knockout competitions. This week we

were very proud of Girls Touch team who were narrowly

defeated by Calare in a very tight game that went to a drop

off, with a final score of 2 - 3. Miss Pitts reported the valiant

effort by all girls, with Calare having a strong home ground

advantage. We have also had Sam Hill, Will Robinson and

Nick Chopping away playing Touch in the State

Championships and look forward to hearing about that on

their return. Girls Basketball head off to West Wyalong and

Boys Touch will also have results to report by the end of this

week.

P&C are holding a disco on Thursday for K-2 4.30pm-6pm and for 3-6 6.30pm-8pm in the

Community Hall. We thank the P&C for their ongoing work in fundraising for our school

and I am sure the children are very excited about this event.

In the classroom, our focus on improving in Mathematics is continuing. Teachers are

training in Explicit Instruction and setting learning goals with their students and sharing

success criteria, to be able to deliver timely feedback for individuals on work as they

complete it. Teachers are also getting more interested in varying the type of texts they

analyse with their students in our increasingly digital world. Many teachers are

experimenting with Visual text samples to increase students ability to find and decode

information.

Our Boost Program (in class component of LaST-Learning and Support Team) that targets

small groups of students in 30 minute lessons 3 days a week, for 4-5 weeks is starting

to gain traction. Teachers are identifying groups of students to access specialist teachers

to work in small group situations. It is commonly misunderstood that Learning and

Support is only to target deficits in learning, but it is our responsibility as a school to

continue to work in innovative ways to be able to enhance the learning of all students.

We have been developing this model over the last year and the feedback from students is

really positive. They seem to enjoy being invited to work in small and different student

groupings, for a variety of English and Maths focussed tuition, with close and convenient

access to a teacher for feedback on how they are going as they complete tasks.

In other areas of learning Year 3 have enjoyed their Netwaste Workshops learning more about Biodiversity.

Kindergarten were involved in Healthy Ears instruction which is always a necessary and valuable learning tool for

teachers and students alike. Multiple authors are also visiting both libraries to encourage reading and the students

interest in a variety of different series available for borrowing. Our children involved in the Music Program are still in

preparation for a variety of ensemble performances at the Music element of the Orange Eisteddfod coming up.

Thank you to Mrs Sawyer and her 'band' of merry tutors for all their work in this preparation.

Last week saw the end of the Dance element of the Orange Eisteddfod with

our 4 groups competing across the 3 stage sections. It was great to watch

the groups enjoying this performance and critique opportunity and I was so

very proud of their performance, attitude and behaviour in this very formal

and competitive setting. Congratulations must go to Mrs Bird for her

groups, Year 1 placing 3rd and Stage 2 and Stage 3 both placing 2nd.

Congratulations also to Mrs Fisk for her group, Year 2, receiving very highly

commended. Some of these dances have been prepared with a duel

purpose. There will be further opportunity to appreciate the skill of their

teachers through the students execution of their routines in our School

Musical, coming up in Week 8 Term 4.

We all look forward to Mr Tom's return next week.

Have a great week

Western Region Band Camp

Year 6 students, Hamish and Eloise Milne attended the Western Region Band Camp

during the last week of Term 2. We interviewed them on their experiences.

Where was the camp?

Eloise: It was at the Lake Burrendong Sport and Recreation Camp.

What sorts of things did you do there?

Hamish: On top of playing music for a few hours every morning and afternoon, we

participated in many sport/rec activities, such as rock climbing, archery and fencing.

Approximately how many students were involved?

Eloise: About fifty.

How many songs did you learn and was there a performance at the end?

Hamish: We learned about five songs and travelled to a number of schools to perform them, including Bletchington

and Wellington schools.

What was your favourite part of the experience?

Eloise and Hamish: The musical benefits!

How did the experience help you as a musician?

Eloise: It was great having new and challenging music to try.

What impact did it have on you socially?

Hamish: It helped us work as a team and we made new friends with student musicians all over the Western Region.

Eloise: We also had to adapt to a new environment without our parents.

Would you recommend band/vocal camp to other students in the future?

Hamish & Eloise: Yes. Definitely!

Boys PSSA Football (Soccer)

Last Wednesday our boys’ football team travelled to Dubbo to compete in the Western Final. The game conditions

were difficult but were able to work as a team to score the first goal. A mix up in defence had Dubbo South quickly

equalise. Despite opportunities neither team was able to put the ball in the back of the net. This strong defence by

both teams meant that at the end of extra time the scores were still locked at 1-1. School knockout rules state that

the team that has had the most corners will be deemed the winner. Unfortunately for us Dubbo South had been

awarded more corners. I wish to congratulate all the boys on their commitment by attending training sessions after

school and their sportsmanship throughout. Thank you to Jacinta Milne for all the support you have given me

throughout the season. I have thoroughly enjoyed coaching the boys.
