Podcasting Take Two ldquoNetflix for Audiordquo is how Scrippsrsquo DirDigital Solutions Group Rob McCracken described podcasting last week (CAW 127) as Country Aircheck explored the reach and appeal of the growing medium This continuation of that story examines what podcasting could mean for radio and content professionals how Scripps is

working to be at the forefront of the medium and just how much fun podcasting can be Whole New World Programming vet and former KMPSSeattle PD Ed Hill has been coaching podcasters since 2012 and is so bullish on the medium that hersquos building his own network Early to the fold are The Warren Brothers who sat down with him at Nashvillersquos Blackbird Studio over the summer to create a pilot show thatrsquos expected soon

ldquoIf radio wants to turn this to their advantage theyrsquore going to have to create a dedicated teamrdquo Hill says ldquoA lot of these guys see podcasting as an accoutrement they donrsquot see it as a new frontier Podcasting is the future of all mediardquo Scripps views its radio and podcasting businesses separately but does see some synergies ldquoTheyrsquore not totally clear yet but we are having conversations on how our stations can use podcasting to experiment with content grow their audiences and increase time spent listeningrdquo The company also has plans to offer a training program beginning in Q1 for its broadcast radio and TV employees who are interested in becoming podcasters ldquoIt wonrsquot be a mandaterdquo McCracken notes ldquoJust a comprehensive resource for those who want to start a podcastrdquo Fun Of It Speculation about the future aside most every podcaster will tell you that theyrsquore having fun ldquoBeing able to sit down at the end of the week and talk about whatever we want is almost therapeuticrdquo says Silverfish DirProgramming Patrick Thomas ldquoAnd liberatingrdquo adds Big D ldquoThe podcast

Columbiarsquos Maren Morris puts an industry spin on the artist interview I loved listening to KPLXDallas growing up It was also one of the first radio stations I ever got to visit The first time I heard myself on the radio it was obviously very emotional I resisted taking a video because I really just wanted to soak in

the moment It never gets old Luckily there have been no scary moments on my radio tour so far but my favorite memory has been seeing beautiful parts of the country while listening to every NPR and TED Talk podcast in existence My favorite person to travel with is my friend Laura because she makes me laugh when things go wrong Every time Irsquom at a truck stop I buy gum And if Irsquom ever in a Buc-ees I grab Beaver Nuggets (donrsquot ask) Irsquod love to have dinner with Jeff Buckley He was so young when he died and in his prime and wrote some of the most beautiful lyrics Irsquod also love for June Carter and Kurt Cobain to be in attendance Irsquod describe my project as new music with an old soul Itrsquos fun relatable heartbreaking but doesnrsquot take itself too seriously My last impulse buy on the road was almonds The most redneck thing Irsquove done lately I wrote a song about the Powerball lottery My road essentials are hand sanitizer throat spray my Bose headphones and Altoids My least favorite interview question is ldquoWhatrsquos your favorite song on the albumrdquo because I never know how to answer All the songs are my babies Irsquod love to be stuck in Paris because I find it so beautiful and creatively inspiring
