We are limited to only one room, the Auditorium, for any meeting/activity with 10
individuals. Also, the Auditorium is the only space that permits live and recorded
broadcasting on 972.
Kim Rivers is handling all requests for any activity/meeting to be aired on 972. Kim may
be reached on x7393
Tiffan’e Markham continues to reserve meeting room spaces for meetings not requiring
a Zoom connection or 972 live broadcast. Tiffan’e may be reached on x4778.
In the past, we have not maintained a calendar for the Creative Arts Room or the
Interfaith Chapel as these rooms were designated for specific uses per the
committee. These rooms are also two of the larger spaces and we will work in
partnership with the Creative Arts and Interfaith Chapel committee chairs’ in reserving
these spaces for non-committee purposes. In addition, the Game Room, is being
utilized by Marketing for appointments. Terri Mosley is handing the reservations for
this space and may be reached on x7703.
Please remember, Zoom and Outdoor gatherings (if the weather permits and we have a
warm winter day) are the safest options to gather together as we continue to navigate
through the pandemic.

On Here? Was Christmas really banned in Massachusetts until the 1850s? How did the

Christmas? How did Santa go from a 4th century Turkish bishop, to a tiny elf, to a life-size
grandfatherly figure dressed in red? What role did Coca-Cola play in this? Where does
the Yule log fit into Christmas? Why are so many Christmas songs like “Rudolph” written
by Jewish composers? What’s with the recent trend of upside-down Christmas trees?
And is there really a “War on Christmas?” During this talk, Professor O’Donnell will take
on these and many more Christmas-related questions.

Ebenezer Scrooge, an elderly miser who is visited by the ghost of his former business
partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. After
their visits, Scrooge is transformed into a kinder, gentler man.

CollingtonPresents: Our resident piano master Peter Basquin has prepared a recital of
Romantic piano masterpieces, all of which are in three-quarter time. These works--
Chopin's Mazurkas Op. 59, Ravel's Valses nobles et sentimentales, and Chopin's Andante
spianato and Grande Polonaise brillante--illustrate the variety of expression that can be
developed from such an apparently simple dance rhythm. Saturday, Dec. 12, 3 pm,

From the COO, Megan Barbour:
MedStar Center for Successful Aging Outpatient Clinic at Collington- Renovation
Coming!
Collington has exciting news to share with the community! We are scheduled to start
renovations on the outpatient clinic space on December 21st. This venture was part of
the first conversations with MedStar Center for Successful Aging in 2018. During
contract negotiations the MedStar and Collington teams developed a plan to renovate
the clinic space to improve customer experience, higher quality care during
appointments, and to better support the MedStar Center for Successful Aging model of
care. When the partnership was confirmed in June of 2019, finalization of the clinic
space renovations was also occurring between MedStar and the architect. Involved in
the process were Dr. George Hennawi, several members of the MedStar team, Rob
Reigle, Justin Reaves, Megan Barbour and resident Dr. Peter Fielding. While COVID
required a pause on the renovation planning, Rob Reigle led efforts in working with the
architect to present multiple potential contractor bids for the project. The firm selected
is Kalmia Construction.
15
PLEASE, DON’T FORGET YOUR MASK. Courier, Dec 14- 20, 2020
During construction, the MedStar team will be temporarily relocated to apartment 262,
next to the Finance office suite. MedStar will begin seeing patients in this location on
Friday, December 18th.
Phoebe Graham, Social Worker, and Natalee Zimmerman, Activities & Wellness
Manager will relocate temporarily to apartment 216. This space is down the hall from
the current 262 space, on the way to the main dining room.
At this time, we expect to complete construction mid to late February. Rob Reigle,
Director of Information Technology and Special Projects is serving as the project
manager for the clinic renovation. Throughout the project Rob Reigle will work closely
with the MedStar and Kalmia teams. Renderings of the clinic construction are being
printed and will be shared at next Friday’s Community Meeting and will be on display at
the clocktower.
We apologize in advance for any inconveniences caused during the construction. We
hope that you will join us in our excitement of the renovation of this space that will
result in a better physical environment to support our residents health, safety, and
wellbeing.

Important Information – Vaccination Strategy
December 9, 2020
On Monday, December 7th, Collington team members participated in a call with CVS pharmacy to learn more about the Center of Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) and the State of Maryland’s COVID-19 vaccination plans. While we recognize that this is a fluid situation, we wanted to share a summary of Collington’s probable Vaccination Strategy, which is based on those plans. With this information, there are several points we would like to emphasize: 1. As we get closer to the vaccine being approved, we are seeing more and more
of the public feeling complacent and not following precautions. However, we
must continue to be vigilant with following our health bundle of hand
washing, wearing masks, social distancing and staying home if you are not
feeling well.
2. We will continue to protect ourselves and our Community with COVID-19
precautions even after residents and team members are vaccinated.
3. The following plans are subject to change as additional information becomes
available.
Partnership with CVS pharmacy The Maryland Department of Health has chosen CVS pharmacy for each Nursing Home and Assisted Living Facility in Maryland to partner with on the vaccination. Collington is very familiar with CVS as CVS Omnicare is Collington’s partner pharmacy for the Creighton Center, and annually CVS hosts the flu clinic for Collington team members. CVS pharmacy will provide Collington with three potential dates when their teams will be on site to administer the vaccine. CVS pharmacy shared that their goal is to be here between December 21st and January 4th, but those dates could change based on federal and state approvals, vaccination quantities available, and vaccination distribution plans from the providers.
2
While there are several promising vaccines for COVID-19 being developed by Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson and Novavax. The specific vaccination that CVS receives for distribution will be based on state jurisdiction. Once CVS sends us the dates for the vaccination clinic, those dates will be communicated to all team members and residents as applicable, along with consent forms that will be required to be completed, and vaccination information. Insurance cards will be required for the vaccination clinic. There will be no cost to the individual receiving the vaccination. The cost of the vaccination will be covered but the federal government and insurance will be billed for the administration of the vaccine. Any persons who are not covered by insurance, will have the vaccine cost covered by the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration. On Friday, December 4th, Collington completed a request from the Maryland Department of Health to ensure that all eligible facilities were registered appropriately with the CVS Vaccination program. It was noted in that request that Maryland Department of Health wanted to ensure our independent living residents were registered as well. However, on the call yesterday with CVS, it was noted that this vaccination clinic will focus on nursing home and assisted living residents and may not include independent living at this time. While we are awaiting additional information to clarify that statement, it was mentioned on the webinar that future opportunities for vaccinations will be available for independent living residents. While this gives us a glimmer of hope for a return to a more social future, we need to be aware that the vaccine will not lead to an immediate or rapid end of the pandemic, nor will it eliminate – at least not for a while - the need to maintain social distancing, wearing a mask and other mitigation measures. It is still not known if the vaccination will give full immunity to the disease or if asymptomatic transmission may occur even if a person has been vaccinated. The duration of protection will only be known after months of post-vaccination surveillance. This is where we will continue to see changing guidelines by the local and federal governments. The CDC is making vaccination recommendations based on input from the federal Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which is made up of

medical and public health experts. ACIP has published its recommendations, and decisions are now being made by governors on how to prioritize vaccinations within their states. State of Maryland Vaccination Plan On Monday, December 8th, Governor Hogan shared that doses of the coronavirus vaccine could start arriving in Maryland as soon as next week. The first vaccinations have been reserved for hospital workers and nursing home residents and employees. The two major providers are Pfizer and Moderna. Governor Hogan also announced that Maryland plans to have multiple priority groups who will receive the vaccine:
• Phase 1A includes health care workers, residents and staff of long-term care facilities and first responders.
• Phase 1B adds in people at “significantly higher risk” of severe CoVID-19 illness.
• Phase 2 will allow person in critical and essential infrastructure roles and those who are at moderately high risk of severe COVID-19 illness.
The last group will be the general population. Will vaccination be mandated here at Collington? This is still being considered, but at this time, the thinking is that the vaccine will not be mandated for residents or team members. It is, however, strongly recommended. This may change if there is a mandate at the state or federal level. Information gathered so far points to required mask wearing and universal precautions for an unspecified time period of time once vaccinations have started – regardless of whether you get the vaccine or not. It is safe to assume that we will all be wearing masks throughout 2021. This also means that many of the precautionary measures to mitigate community spread may remain in place for team members, residents and visitors, such as self-quarantining if exposed or traveling to a “hot spot.” These or additional infection prevention measures may

continue to be recommended by entities such as the CDC, CMS, and MD DOH and will then be implemented at Collington. Declination of a Vaccine If a Collington resident or team member declines the vaccination during the CVS vaccination clinic, they may have to wait until the final Phase of distribution due to allocations and logistical issues with vaccination programs. Education We will provide more education on the vaccine and its rollout as it becomes available. Below is a list of some information website regarding the COVID-19 vaccine and COVID-19.

December 2020
Dear Residents,
The foundation comes to you the residents, once a year, to ask for your financial
support. You are central to our mission, vision, and the purpose of our work.
Supporting residents: Through Food Truck Friday: To build community morale
Awarding grants to resident projects
Supporting Team Members: Through continuing-education scholarships
Reaching out to help our community neighbors: Through grants and supplies and
Christmas gifts.
This year the foundation board of directors accepted our first administrative grant
proposal because we thought there was a compelling and overarching need to
update and upgrade our WIFI system. When first installed, it was never intended
to accommodate today’s usage. We’ll all get the service we need now and into the
future.
Please make your contribution to the foundation. First-time donor gifts will be
matched! Thank you.
