Reasons toDelay
Buying aHomeCompliments of Ed Wohlfiel
Assuming you have the financialresources and the desire to eventu-ally own your own home, there arevery few good reasons to put off thepurchase. You can miss out onyears of appreciation if you do.
The main thing you want toavoid when buying a home is beingput in a position where you willhave to sell it too soon. If you haveto sell a home before it has appreci-ated enough to cover the costs and
commissions of selling, you couldfind yourself in a financial bind. This is especially true for thosewho buy a home with a down pay-ment of ten percent or less.
Real Estate commissions tradi-tionally run around six percent of ahomes sales price. The sellers clos-ing costs generally come to aboutone and a half percent. You can seehow this can easily exceed the firstyears appreciation. If you made aminimal down payment, you couldactually have to come up with cashout of pocket to sell your home.
New to the Area A very good to reason to delay
buying a home is if you have just
moved to an unfamiliar area orregion of the country. It makessense to rent for a number ofmonths before deciding on exactlywhere you want to live. Often whenpeople buy a home immediatelythey find that they might havemade a better decision if they hadwaited awhile.
Uncertain Job FutureYou could be right out of college
or expecting a promotion and atransfer. Or your company hasannounced an impending"restructuring." If any of theseapply, it might be best to wait tobuy a home. When you have a moreaccurate picture of what your nextfew years will be like, that will be
the time to buy.
Marital ProblemsReal estate agents see a lot of life
unfold before their eyes. One of thesaddest occurs when former clientsdivorce and are forced to sell arecently purchased house. It hap-pens all too often when a family inturmoil decides that buying a newhome may help resolve their prob-lems. Perhaps it is inevitable thatsuch problems occur, but selling ahome before it appreciates can cre-ate an additional financial burdenin an already difficult situation.

Space, comfort, gorgeous rustic elegance and waterfront livingall on a beautiful all-sports lake near Gaylord. What a fabulous
way to enjoy living in the north!
This three-bedroom, two bath lakeside abode features just over
2,000 square feet of well-planned, wonderfully appointed living
space. A centerpiece of the design is a large and open great room,
kitchen and dining area highlighted by a soaring cathedral ceiling,
a stunningly beautiful wall of windows framing the westerly
lakeside views, and the northern interior elegance of rich, tongue
and groove walls and ceiling finishes. The space is anchored by a
magnificent wood-burning fireplace with a grand fieldstone sur-
round and wood mantel.
Other highlights of the home include a huge wrap-around
raised deck that extends across the rear and side of the home, a
lower level walkout that features a large family room area and two
of the homes three bedrooms. A main level laundry room pro-
vides much appreciated convenience, and ample extra storageshould never be an issue as this property also features a detached
three-car garage.
As wonderful as this home is, the allure of the 177 feet of all-
sports lake frontage this property offers is certain to be a much
valued attribute that will bring the new homeowners countless
hours of recreational and relaxation enjoyment. A dock, 18-foot
pontoon boat, and even a paddleboat are all included in the list-
ing price.
And the very attractive listing price for this fabulous year-
round or vacation lakeside get-away is just $230,000.

Located just far enough off the beaten path toembrace a gorgeous, peaceful wooded setting, yetonly about ten minutes from downtown Gaylord,Michaywe Inn the Woods restaurant provides theperfect setting to enjoy a delicious dining experiencethat is both comfortably casual, and memorably ele-gant.
The menu offers a moderately priced and nicelyvaried selection of traditional American cuisine, highlighted by freshly prepared soups and salads, specialty sandwiches and burgers, house favoritesincluding New York Strip steak, hearty Beef Pot Roast,Baby Back Ribs, Great Lakes Perch, and Whitefish.Homemade pizzas and a selection of tasty appetizerssuch as Bacon Wrapped Scallops, FlatbreadBruschetta and Boneless Buffalo Wings are also avail-able.
Chef John Kaye, who learned his culinary craft atOakland Community College and apprenticed at theprestigious Orchard Lake Country Club, oversees thekitchen at Michaywe Inn the Woods, and has accu-mulated nearly 20 years of experience as a chef inleading area resorts.
He states, We take a food-first approach here atMichaywe Inn the Woods. Flavors, textures, season-
ings and freshness are our priorities. We purchase asmany of our ingredients locally as possible, and weeven have our own herb garden right here on thegrounds. We believe that the little details make thedifference for our guests.
The Michaywe Inn the Woods setting is simplysuperb, with a wall of windows along two sides of themain dining area beautifully capturing the views ofthe surrounding woodlands, the graceful walkingbridge arching over Lake Michaywe, and the open
fairways of the Pines Golf Course. Outside dining isavailable, as are two large banquet rooms that areregularly utilized for wedding receptions, rehearsaldinners and business or organizational meetings andgatherings. Michaywe Inn the Woods also features aseparate lounge area with a full selection of wines,
beers and spirits and flat screen televisions strategi-cally placed for optimal guest viewing.
The facility is open year round with the exceptionof a two-week period in early April for spring-clean-ing. Hours of operation are Monday throughThursday, 4 pm until 9 pm, Friday 4 pm until 10 pm,Saturday noon until 10 pm, and Sunday from noonuntil 8 pm.
Michaywe Inn the Woods offers a truly uniquedining experience in a beautiful northern Michigansetting, he adds. We firmly believe that after visit-ing us the first time, guests will return again andagain.

By Tom Ogren
Some years ago I wrote several articles touting
the use of local honey to help alleviate seasonalpollen allergy/hay fever symptoms. I wrote thatI had seen local honey used numerous times
with very good effect, that it was relatively safe, was inexpensive, and that the honey itself also
had other health benefits that might be good for
people with allergies.I wrote that the honey used ought to be raw
honey, unheated, unpasteurized, and that the
more local the honey was, the more it was apt tobe effective. The theory works like this: the pol-
lens you are most likely to be allergic to, arethose found in the area where you live and work,
the pollen grains coming from local trees,
shrubs, grasses, vines and flowers in your ownimmediate area.
The local honeybees, the bees that live and
harvest pollen and nectar in your own neighbor-hood, they are collecting the exact same kind ofpollen grains that you would be most allergic to.Small amounts of this same pollen (and otherpossible local allergens associated with flowers)will be found in the honey these bees make.
Allergy therapy is roughly based on three con-cepts:
1. Avoidance: Avoid what is triggering yourown allergies - hence the prime importance ofallergy-free gardening. It makes NO sense toplant highly allergenic plants in your own yard;doing so will just over-load your immune systemwith allergens.
2. Immunotherapy: Verysmall amounts of the allergensare taken over a long period oftime, allowing the body tobuild up resistance to the aller-gens. This is the same thing anallergist does when they give
someone allergy shots. This isalso the same thing that canhappen when local honey isused over a prolonged periodof time.
3. Antihistamines, drugs:This, unfortunately, is the mostcommon way of dealing withthe problem of pollen allergies.Doctors prescribe billions ofdollars worth of prescriptiondrugs to stifle the effects of theallergies. Many millions of dol-lars worth of other similar non-prescription drugs are simplybought over the counter, againto damper down the hyperimmune system, to get relieffrom the allergies.
Lets take a quick look at the
three concepts of how to deal
with pollen allergies, at the good and bad pointsof all three.
Avoidance is the best, by far. There are no neg-
ative side effects from simply avoiding whateverit is that makes one feel bad; it is the utmost ofcommon sense. Many city streets and a multi-tude of city parks, schools, commercial land-scapes, and especially front and backyards ofhomes, worldwide, have been landscaped withplants that will over-produce very largeamounts of highly allergenic pollen each yearand they will trigger allergic reactions. Overtime, the allergies to these allergenic local plants will get worse, not better unless changes aremade in the local environment unless the mostallergenic plants are replaced with allergy-freeplant choices.
Immunotherapy is often very effective, but itis typically quite expensive and many insurancepolicies do not cover the expenses then too, overtime, the effects of the allergy shots tend to wearoff, and they need to be repeated. Nonetheless,if one can afford these shots, I do recommendthem. Local honey does much the same thing,
but it costs much less, and also has other healthbenefits from the raw honey itself.
Antihistamines, drugs: When an allergicresponse is triggered, the bodys immune sys-tem goes into overdrive, attacking the pollen asthough it were a more dangerous substancethan it actually is. The physical result of all thisover-action on the part of the immune systemresults in itching, runny and sneezy noses, andof course, more mucus production. The allergydrugs put a damper on the immune system andthus reduce these symptoms caused by thishyper-activity.
But, at what cost? It has been long known, and well documented, that allergies are protectiveagainst cancer. Yes, having allergies protectsagainst cancer, as does having asthma. Whywould this be?
At any given time any one of us may have can-cer of some form or another somewhere in our
bodies, but most of the time our own immune
system will attack the cancer and kill it off longbefore it ever gets out of control. When someonewith allergies comes in contact with allergenic
pollen and their immune system is kicked intogear, the immune system is not just fighting theallergens, it is also attacking any cancer cellsthey may have, realized or not. Thus, an occa-sional over-active immune system is actually ablessing, even if it may not feel like it at the time.
Now, consider the allergy drugs, and the effectthey have: these drugs are designed to shutdown this same protective immune system. I would advise anyone fighting cancer of anykind, to avoid taking any kind of allergy medi-cine. Furthermore, I would advise any one tak-ing allergy medicine on a regular basis, to tryand find a way to stop their dependence onthese drugs. From my research I am increasing-ly led to believe that antihistamines can openthe body up more to attack from cancer cells.
So, what is a person with severe pollen aller-gies to do? For starters, if you are taking Allegra,Claritin or similar drugs on a daily basis duringpollen season, I would advise that you skip sev-
eral days each week to let your immune systemdo its work. I would also advise that, if possible, you see an allergist and get the allergy shots.
I would strongly advise going to the closestfarmers market and buying some local rawhoney, and then to use it daily, in smallamounts. ** Please note, that those individualswith the most severe allergies can get an allergicresponse (including anaphylaxis) from the localhoney itself. Because of this I advise people tostart out with very small amounts of the localhoney perhaps as little as a quarter of a tea-spoon a day or less. If this triggers an allergicresponse, such as itching in the back of thethroat, then you will need to take an even small-er initial dose. Over time the amount of localhoney taken daily can, and should be, increasedbut it makes sense to be cautious in the begin-ning, and to carefully monitor your ownprogress.
Lastly, and perhaps this should be first, andnot last, you should allergy-free your own yards, and tryand get your neighbors to dothe same. Likewise, peopleshould demand that their owncities pay attention to the aller-gy potential of the street treesthey plant. It makes no sense atall for a city to plant trees thatwill cause allergies (often maleclones) when they couldinstead plant trees that areevery bit as beautiful, but thatdo not produce allergenicpollen.
As always, another caution isin order: local honey shouldnot be given to babies underthe age of one.

Michigan 45th nation-
wide for flu vaccina-tion coverage of chil-
dren 4 and under
No matter how healthy someone may be,
everyone has a chance of getting a severe case
of the flu, young children and adults alike.
Last year, 20,000 children with the flu were
hospitalized; 115 children in the U.S. died
from influenza-associated illness, including
six from Michigan.
Its tragic that so many children died from
a virus that has a safe and effective vaccine,
said Joshua Meyerson, MD, Medical Director
for the Health Department of Northwest
Michigan. Many of these deaths could have
been prevented through vaccination. We say,
Everyone. Every year because everyone age
six months old and up should get an annual
seasonal flu vaccine.
Infants younger than 6 months are too
young to be vaccinated. Meyerson says to
protect them from the dangers of influenza
by making sure parents, siblings, grandpar-
ents, babysitters, and anyone in close contact
with infants are fully vaccinated. Its also
important for pregnant women to get vacci-
nated against the flu, as the vaccine protects
both the mother and unborn baby.
The good news is that there are a number of
places where childrenand adults--can getthe flu vaccine. The Health Department of
Northwest Michigan is launching a series of
Community Immunization Clinics next week,
in partnership with several school districts.
In addition to seasonal flu shots and nasal flu
mist, many other immunizations will be
available. To schedule an appointment at any
of the Community Immunization Clinics
scheduled in Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet, or
Otsego counties, call the Health Department
of Northwest Michigan at 800-432-4121 dur-
ing regular business hours.

The charge for flu vaccine at Health
Department clinics is $25; charges for addi-
tional vaccines vary. We can bill Medicare,
Medicaid, and several private health insur-
ance companies for immunizations, said PatFralick, the Health Departments Director of
Family & Community Health. Fralick said the
Health Department does not turn away any-
one age 18 or younger for inability to pay for
immunizations required for school. She
noted anyone under age 18 must have their
parent or guardian accompany them for
immunizations.
Fralick highly recommends making
appointments at the Community
Immunization Clinics. We do quite a lot of
preparation to make sure people can get in
and out as quickly as possible, she said.
When we know how many are coming, we
can bring plenty of vaccine and have ade-
quate nursing staff. We can also identify any
other vaccines individuals may need by
checking Michigan Care ImprovementRegistry in advance and give them at that
same ap pointment.
"Not only is it important
for our patients to get vacci-
nated, but it's also critical
that physicians and other
health care providers get vac-
cinated," said Meyerson.
"Annual immunization of
health care professionals
protects employees, their
families, and their patients,
and it may reduce influenza-related deaths
among persons at high risk for complications
from influenza."Getting a flu vaccine is easy, and it is the
first and most important step you can take in
protecting yourself and your loved ones from
getting the flu, said Meyerson. While flu
seasons are unpredictable, flu vaccination is
the single best way to protect against influen-
za, especially for those under 5 years of age.
The Health Department of Northwest
Michigan is mandated by the Michigan
Public Health Code to promote wellness, pre-
vent disease, provide quality healthcare,
address health problems of vulnerable popu-
lations, and protect the environment for the
residents and visitors of Antrim, Charlevoix,
Emmet, and Otsego counties.
For more information about flu vaccine,
visit www.cdc.gov/flu. To schedule an
appointment at a Community ImmunizationClinic, call the Health Department at 800-
432-4121 during regular business hours.
