PROJECT / FELLOWSHIP TOUR Campuhan College and Setia Darma House of Masks & Puppets On Wednesday, 28 January 2015 the RCBS Club journeyed to Ubud to visit the Campuhan College, Ubud (http://www.karunabali.com/index.php?section=2) and the Setia Darma House of Masks and Puppets Museum, Mas (http://www.setiadarma.org) for its monthly Project / Fellowship Tour.

Members and Guests first met at the Campuhan College around 14:00 and were warmly welcomed by I Wayan Rustiasa, the Founder, Ni Luh Warsini, the Director of the Yayasan Karuna Bali, IGA Putri Meiyani, the School Director and Philipus Yusenda, the School Program Manager. After Pak Wayan introduced himself, he told the visitors that he and Pak Philipus were proud members of the RC of Bali Ubud Sunset. Rtn. Philipus is currently the RCBUS President.

After telling a heart-warming story about why he wanted to setup a training center and later the Yayasan Karuna Bali, Rtn. Wayan shared with the visitors the Foundation’s Vision and Mission.

Following this, Rtn. Wayan showed two short films highlighting the school’s programs and accomplishments during the past nine years.

Once the films were finished, Rtn. Wayan took a moment and sincerely thanked the RCBS for helping to support one of their current students, 18 year-old I Komang Wisnu from the island of Nusa Penida.

The Yayasan Karuna Bali is able, through its extensive contacts overseas, to provide one-year student scholarships to 24 students studying a variety of subjects from English Language to Graphic Arts. The RCBS is supporting Komang by paying his monthly living expenses (IDR 850,000).

Before departing, the members had an opportunity to tour the School’s facilities, observe some students learning and ask a number of pertinent questions.

Following the tour of the Campuhan College, the members drove south of Ubud to the village of Mas to visit the well-known Setia Darma House of Masks and Puppets.

The House of Masks and Puppets was initiated by Mr. Hadi Sunyoto, a businessman and cultural enthusiast, who spent seven years collecting masks and puppets from different regions around Indonesia.

Concerned with the lack of appreciation and awareness towards the disappearing traditional art form of masks and puppets in Indonesia, he decided to create a space to collect, preserve and spread the knowledge of the art form of masks and puppets. As a result, the House of Masks and Puppets was opened in 2006.

The collection currently consists of approximately 6,900 items, of which 1,300 are masks from Indonesia, Africa, and Japan; whilst the other 5,700 are puppets from Indonesia, China, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia. Although the House of Masks and Puppets has several objects from other countries, the collection mostly consists of items from various regions in Indonesia.

In addition to this extensive collection, the House of Mask & Puppets Setiadarma has a number of facilities that are available for hire and is suitable for different purposes, including performances, trainings, weddings, family/school/group outings and film production.

The facilities include exhibition rooms, a conference hall, meeting rooms, performance buildings, an indoor theater, a 500 seat outdoor amphitheater and a coffee shop.

Following a very informative one-hour tour, the members drove a short distance to the very quiet Semar Warung, Mas for a pleasant and relaxing dinner together before heading back down the mountain to lively Seminyak.
