Principal’s Note
Hello and welcome to my Principal’s Note for Week 9.
Over the past weeks, it has been evident that all students
and staff have been making the most of every opportuni-
ty to learn, reinforce and enhance key concepts and un-
derstandings to ensure better outcomes and success in
the future.
Over the previous couple of weeks, I have challenged all
students to ponder over two questions in order to gain
clarity of the true purpose of specific learning activities.
These two questions “What am I learning?” and “Why am
I learning this?”, have been presented to students over
the past weeks to challenge deeper thinking about their
learning experiences. This aids in moving beyond sur-
face learning and developing deeper knowledge which
will ultimately allow students to transfer knowledge to
other areas. Successfully linking and making connections
between subjects and learning experiences is a clear
indicator that deeper knowledge has been acquired.
I look forward to continuing with our team to promote
greater learning outcomes for all students. Parents are
encouraged to speak with their child’s teacher to find out
how they can support learning at home.
Rewards Afternoon
On Thursday March 30, all students with 0-2 Detentions
or Office Referrals for Minor behaviour or 1 Major behav-
iour in Term 1 will be invited to attend and participate in
the Rockin’ Rewards afternoon. This end of term reward
activity is for those students who have consistently
demonstrated appropriate behaviour throughout Term 1.
Students with three or more Detentions or Office Refer-
rals for Minor behaviour, or one Major behaviour referral
for Term 1, will be engaged in a School Expectation Re-
fresher Workshop to reflect on appropriate behaviour
choices instead of attending the Rockin’ Rewards after-
noon.
Invitations will go out in the middle of Week 10.

Highest attendance for Week 8: Prep
98.46%!
Regular attendance leads to enhanced
achievement and learning progress. Let’s
ensure all students attend school to reap
the rewards of consistent participation and
engagement. Unless your child is ill, it is
expected that your child will be at school
learning every day of the school year.
I remind all families of the school’s high
expectations around attendance even dur-
ing the last weeks of school. All students are expected
to be in attendance until 3pm Friday 31 March.

munities to support and enrich a curriculum that is ap-
propriate for the educational needs of geographically
isolated primary and secondary school students. Com-
munity-based organisations within the Maranoa Re-

News
Welcome to another edition of The Green Patch Surat News. The end of Term One is here and what a busy term
we have had!! Each class has been involved in both kitchen and garden activities with great enthusiasm and ex-
citement. Here’s a snapshot of what has gone on over the term…
Prep, Year 1, 2 & 3 …..
In the kitchen we’ve
tried blueberry pike-
lets…soft boiled eggs
with fence posts…ham
and cheese toast fin-
gers and monkey tail
sandwiches…we have
stirred, cut, rolled,
spread, tasted and washed up…

In the garden we have made cress heads,
mini greenhouses, and foam box gardens
that have a garden girl/guy, made from a
plastic spoon, looking over our plants.
This week we planted some peas in our
garden at Prep…can’t wait to taste them.
Year 4
We have made blueberry
muffins and for our Design
and Technology task, we
have made some healthy
lunch dishes using old and
new technologies…practising
for our final task which is go-
ing to be a Mexican End of
Term Celebration.
In our gardening classes we planted
seeds and kept them in our class-
room until they became seedlings.
We then made some wicking boxes and transplanted the seedlings
into these special boxes. Come and have a look – they are under
the stairs at the kitchen end of the building. Some of our plants are
doing well.

Year 5 6
Our garden task for this term was to get the herb garden up and growing. Firstly we made a couple of wicking boxes and
transplanted the existing herbs – parsley, basil and a curry plant. We dug the soil over with garden forks and a hoe; topped up
the soil with cow, sheep and a little chook manure along with some mulch lucerne hay. We planted some other herb seeds in
seed raising trays – Italian parsley, curled parsley, coriander and nasturtiums. We left the garden for a few weeks, so we did-
n’t burn our little plants, while we waited for our seeds to grow. Mrs Pointon has been busy planting out our seedlings so
hopefully we will soon have a variety of herbs to use in the kitchen.
In the kitchen the first item we made was Pizza a la….
We had a pizza base and a variety of topping ingredi-
ents to choose from…so we made our own pizza.
YUM!! For the remainder of the term we have been
working on our Design and Technology task – Creat-
ing a safe and hygienic food production environment
in which to make a drink for a client. We have tested
a few different drinks…a green smoothie, appleade,
lemonade, a punch, to name a few…some were good,
others okay, and some not very good at all!
This week we visited the Timber Crate to watch a food
production environment in action so we could observe
and identify safe and hygienic work practices. We got to taste one of their delicious milkshakes. Delicious!
Year 7 8
We have been focussing on the kitchen aspect of the subject this term, in order to complete our Technology and Design task
of fusing two cultures to make a food parcel. We have made some food parcels…a meat pie and pasties. We have re-
searched a culture to learn about their foods and flavours. Last week we cooked up a cultural buffet so we could try some
different cultural dishes…we had Sweet and Sour Pork from China, Chicken Teriyaki from Japan, Vietnamese Rice Paper
Rolls from Vietnam, Canneloni from Italy, Ki Si Min from New Zealand, Lamb Biryani from India, Enchiladas from Mexico and
Spring Rolls from China as well.
In Agricultural Science, we are focussing on the garden – our task is to plan, and create a managed food production environ-
ment. As a class we have decided to plan and create part of an extension to our existing garden. This will provide enough
beds for all classes to work in the garden, an opportunity to include chickens in the future and other garden features. Each
student is to make a plan, then we will collaborate to come up with one plan and one part of the garden that we can produce.
Exciting times for our garden!
Year 9 10
In the kitchen we have been focussing on learning and improving our cookery skills. We have made some take home dishes
– apple crumble & crunchy topped tuna and rice bake; as well as some pizzas and scrambled egg on toast that we enjoyed at
school. Next week we are going to have a go at yeast cookery when we make some hot cross buns to take home for the
Easter holidays.
In Agricultural Science, we are working on preparing the garden beds for planting. We are going to follow a six bed crop
rotation plan to hopefully produce vegetables we can sell at a small garden market stall later in the year.
And to our surprise…rockmelons…accidental propagating…but so far so
good…here’s hoping they ripen before the frosts and we get to enjoy them…
Lots and lots of happenings at The Green Patch Surat, and Term 2 will be no different. Looking
forward to more of the same with each and every class…their enthusiasm and participation is truly
encouraging and great to be a part of.
Mrs Pointon
