MARKET WRAP
Indian market ends up despite negative global cues, Markets witness FII’s inflows.
Food inflation falls to 8.06% w/w while primary articles inflation eased to 10.87%.
Global equity markets ends down on weak economic indicators, DJIA down 2.5%.
Indian equity market ended positive despite negative global cues as it witnessed FII’s
inflows complimented by declining trend in inflation. Nifty added 41 pts to end at 5516
after making a weekly high of 5608 while Sensex rallied 110 pts to end the week at
18377. Markets upside was capped by Friday’s sell off due to weaker U.S & Euro
markets. Bank nifty future gained 1.15% or 123 pts to end at 10761. In frontline
stocks, Tata Motors tumbled 6.2% while Hindalco, Cairn and M&M shredded 3 - 5%.
India’s food price inflation declined on weekly basis as it came down to 8.06% vs.
8.55% in previous week while Primary articles inflation eased down to 10.87% vs.
11.60% in the previous week. Fall in food inflation was on the back of decline in prices
of pulses by 9.22% y/y and wheat by 0.77%. The centre’s Fiscal deficit in April worked
out to be 18.1% of budget estimates as it stood at Rs. 74611 Cr. India’s HSBC PMI
edged down to 57.5 in May vs. 58.0 in April due to slower expansion rate of new orders.
Global equity markets ended down due to series of weaker than expected economic
indicators that signaled economic slowdown in DM’s. DJIA ended down nearly 2.5% &
Nasdaq ended down 2.3%. Jobless claims came up at 422k while ADP Non-farm
employment change saw sharp decline to 38K. Unemployment rate was up at 9.1% vs.
9.0%. In Euro zone, FTSE was down 84 pts, CAC 60 pts & DAX 55 pts as German retail
sales was down at 0.6%, French consumer spending in negative at (-)1.6% and GBP
manufacturing down at 52.1 vs. 54.4.
