Pompspoils a royal love story

Super heroesare oh so slowBloody and violent from the

outset – hence the 18 certifi-cate – Zack Snyder’s stylish

adaptation of Alan Moore and DaveGibbons’ celebrated graphic novelpulls no punches as its transports usback in time to a very differentvision of the mid 1980s.Relations between America and theSoviet Union are strained and thereis a clear and present danger ofnuclear attack.Nixon is clinging onto power in theWhite House and costumed heroesare part of the fabric of a society inthe thrall of fear and paranoia, reflected in the symbolic DoomsdayClock which edges closer to mid-night as tensions increase betweenthe superpowers. In this politically charged climate, adeadly conspiracy involving themasked crime-fighters unfolds, which could have far-reaching impli-cations for the future of mankind. Many years after the so-calledMinutemen – Captain Metropolis,

The Comedian, Dollar Bill, HoodedJustice, Mothman, Nite Owl, TheSilhouette and Silk Spectre –watched over humanity, a new teamof heroes has taken up the mantle. The Comedian (Jeffrey DeanMorgan) is the last of the old guardstill standing and he is joined by DrManhattan (Billy Crudup), Nite OwlII (Patrick Wilson), Ozymandias(Matthew Goode), Rorschach (JackieEarle Haley) and Silk Spectre II(Malin Akerman). When one of the team is murderedin the film’s bone-crunching openingsequence, the remaining membersunravel layers of mystery shroudingthe crime. In the process, Silk Spectre II clash-es with her lover, Dr Manhattan, theonly member of the team blessedwith actual superpowers – he canglimpse the future – after an accidentin a nuclear lab.

“You know how everything in thisworld fits together except people,’’she rages. “What am I, some kind ofpuzzle to be solved?’’The argument drives her into thearms of Nite Owl II and an exceed-ingly raunchy sex scene – shot in yetmore slow motion – to a soundtrackof Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah’.Watchmen is clearly a labour of lovefor Snyder, the writer-director of300, working from a screenplay byDavid Hayter and Alex Tse, and headheres closely to the source text.Pacing is incredibly slow, even inthe action sequences, which relyheavily on slow motion. It is little wonder the film runs to anuncomfortable, buttock-numbing 162minutes.There is no doubt that Snyder canorchestrate mayhem on a grandscale. The break-in to a prison is masterful-ly executed and myriad computergenerated special effects are seam-lessly melded with live action.

However, the final half hour, densewith philosophical navel-gazing, isespecially heavy going despite a verysimple, straightforward mystery asthe central dramatic thread with anobvious master villain. The script is littered with occasionaltongue-in-cheek one-liners, like onecharacter laughing off suggestionsthat Ronald Reagan could becomePresident: “This is America. Nobodywants a cowboy in the WhiteHouse!’’Yee hahaha!

WATCHMEN (18)Rating: 6.5/10

Violent thriller that’s full of suspense

THE YOUNG VICTORIA (18)Rating: 6/10

SURVEILLANCE (18)Rating: 6/10

OF all the love stories that have defined theBritish monarchy, none tugs the heartstringsquite like Victoria and Prince Albert.United amid political storm in 19th centuryBritain, the queen and her first cousin weath-ered disapproval to effect change including theabolition of slavery and educational reform. When Albert succumbed to typhoid at 42, thequeen was plunged into mourning. The Young Victoria traces the romance fromthe initial sparks of attraction to marriage, revealing the private frustrations of the youngqueen as she attempts to walk a minefield ofpolitical intrigue and stringent social etiquette.“Some palaces are not at all what you think. Some palaces can be prisons,’’ rues Victoria(Emily Blunt, left) in voiceover as she stepsinto the glare of the 1838 coronation.

Jean-Marc Vallee’s film then rewinds one yearwith the princess at the mercy of her mother, the Duchess of Kent (Miranda Richardson),and scheming advisor Sir John Conroy (MarkStrong), who won’t allow her to descend stairsunaccompanied for fear she might tumble.Ambitious Whig Prime Minister, LordMelbourne (Paul Bettany), cleverly persuadesnaive Victoria to install him as private secre-tary to control affairs at Buckingham Palace. He fills the royal quarters with allies such asthe Duchess of Sutherland (Rachael Stirling),and keep her at arm’s length from rival, SirRobert Peel (Michael Maloney).Everyone wants to manipulate Victoria for

their own ends, apart from Albert (RupertFriend), who helps the princess in outwittingthe schemers, telling her she must stop being apawn in other people’s games and take control. The Young Victoria has a similar look and feelto The Duchess, boasting gorgeous sets andcostumes and a haunting orchestral scorei.Produced by Sarah Ferguson - look out for afleeting appearance by Princess Beatrice in theopening minutes - the film adheres closely tofact, albeit with an attractive cast. There is also the fanciful addition of Albertusing himself as a human shield to take a bul-let for his beloved as they ride through Londonin an open-top carriage. The pomp and pageantry tend to obscure theemotion in Julian Fellowes’ script, despite thebest efforts of Blunt and Friend.

SUPER HEROES: Matthew Goode asOzymandias and Jeffrey Dean Morganas The Comedian

FILMMAKER Jennifer Lynch follows1993’s controversial Boxing Helena.withher second feature, a thriller of murder anddeception set on one of those never-endinghighways loved by her father. David.Graphic violence and moribund humourprove she has inherited his appreciation fora world on the brink of insanity.Cop buddies Jack (Kent Harper) and Keith

(Josh Strait) get their kicks by terrorisingmotorists and stealing their wallets. The traffic stop turns sour when serialkillers, who have been running amok inthis barren landscape, unexpectedly gate-crash the roadside party.

Many hours later, local police captainBillings (Michael Ironside) and his offi-cers begrudgingly welcome FBI agentsAnderson (Julia Ormond) and Hallaway(Bill Pullman) to interrogate the witnesses. The FBI agents sift through the web oflies to edge closer to the shocking truth.Surveillance effectively builds suspense, accentuated by discordant music.
