A person from Ann Arbor is called...

... an Ann Arborite, and many long-time residentscall themselves townies. The city itself is oftencalled A (A-squared) or A2 (A two), and, lesscommonly, Tree Town. Recently, some youths havetaken to calling Ann Arbor Ace Deuce or simply TheDeuce. With tongue-in-cheek reference to the citysliberal political leanings, some occasionally refer toAnn Arbor as The Peoples Republic of Ann Arboror 25 square miles surrounded by reality, the latter

phrase being adapted from Wisconsin GovernorLee Dreyfuss description of Madison, Wisconsin.Ann Arbor sometimes appears on citation indexesas an author, instead of a location, often with theacademic degree MI, a misunderstanding of the ab-breviation for Michigan.

Ann Arbor is a city in...

... the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat ofWashtenaw County. It is the states seventh largestcity with a population of 114,024 as of the 2000 Cen-sus, of which 36,892 (32%) are university or collegestudents. The city, which is part of the Detroit-Ann

Arbor-Flint, MI CSA, is named after the spouses ofthe citys founders and for the stands of trees in thearea.

    Ann Arbor was founded in...

... January 1824 by John Allen and Elisha Rumsey, both of whom were land speculators. On May 25,1824, the town plot was registered with WayneCounty as Annarbour. The city became the seat ofWashtenaw County in 1827, and was incorporatedas a village in 1833. The town became a regionaltransportation hub in 1839 with the arrival of the

Michigan Central Railroad, and was chartered asa city in 1851. During the 1960s and 1970s, the citygained a reputation as a center for liberal politics.During the 20th century, the economy of Ann Arborunderwent a gradual shift from a manufacturingbase to a service and technology base, which accel-erated in the 1970s and 1980s.

    Ann Arbor is home to...

... the University of Michigan, established in 1837.

As the dominant institution of higher learning inthe city and one of the top public universities in theworld, the university provides Ann Arbor with adistinct college-town atmosphere. The university

shapes Ann Arbors economy signicantly as it em-ploys about 30,000 workers, including about 7,500 inthe medical center. The citys economy is also cen-tered on high-technology, with several companiesdrawn to the area by the universitys research anddevelopment money, and by its graduates. On theother hand, Ann Arbor has increasingly found it-self grappling with the effects of sharply rising landvalues and gentrication, as well as urban sprawlstretching far into the outlying countryside.

    Many Ann Arbor cultural attrac-

tions...... and events are sponsored by the University ofMichigan. Several performing arts groups and fa-cilities are on the universitys campus, as are muse-ums dedicated to art, archaeology, and natural his-tory and sciences (see Museums at the Universityof Michigan). Regional and local performing artsgroups not associated with the university includethe Ann Arbor Civic Theatre; the Arbor Opera The-ater; the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra; the AnnArbor Ballet Theater; the Ann Arbor Civic Ballet (es-

tablished in 1954 as Michigans rst chartered ballet

company); and Performance Network, which oper-ates a downtown theater frequently offering new ornontraditional plays.

    The Ann Arbor Hands-On Muse-um, ...

... located in a renovated and expanded historicdowntown re station, contains more than 250 in-teractive exhibits featuring science and technology.Multiple art galleries exist in the city, notably in thedowntown area and around the University of Mich-igan campus. Aside from a large restaurant scene inthe Main Street, South State Street, and South Uni-versity Avenue areas, Ann Arbor ranks rst amongU.S. cities in the number of booksellers and bookssold per capita. The Ann Arbor District Librarymaintains four branch outlets in addition to its maindowntown building; in 2008 a new branch building

replaced the branch located in Plymouth Mall. Thisnew branch is called the Traverwood Branch, andopened on June 30, 2008. The city is also home to theGerald R. Ford Presidential Library.

    Several annual events...

... many of them centered on performing and visu-al arts draw visitors to Ann Arbor. One such eventis the Ann Arbor Art Fairs, a set of four concurrent

juried fairs held on downtown streets, which began
