MEMORIAL DAY PRAYER

D ear Heavenly Father, as we remember those who have made

the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, we think of how they have followed in the footsteps of your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Please hold our service men and women in your strong

arms. Cover them with your sheltering grace and presence as they stand in defense for our freedom and protection. We also remember the families of our troops and ask for your unique blessings to fill their homes with your peace. Send your Holy Spirit upon them for the strength to fill their lives. May the members of our armed forces be filled with cour-age to face each day and may they trust in the Lord's mighty power to accomplish each task. Let our military brothers and sisters feel our love and support this Memorial Day and every day. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord. Amen.

REFLECTION ON THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

L ast Sunday’s Pentecost Liturgy concluded our annual celebration of all that God has done to accomplish our salvation through Jesus’ mission and ministry: from

Jesus’ Nativity and Baptism, through the Passion and cross, from Resurrection and Ascension to the sending of the Holy Spirit. Today on Trinity Sunday, we celebrate not what God has done for us, but who God is for us and how God’s self-revelation as Father, Son and Spirit draws us even deeper into a relationship of grace that be-gins in Baptism, is nourished through the Eucharist and will come to full flower in the joy of eternal life. Each year, for this celebration, our readings begin with God’s revelation to Israel.

We hear in the first reading how Moses urges the people to be filled with wonder at God’s love in reaching out to make them God’s chosen people. St. Paul declares to the Romans that in Christ, God has drawn even closer to us, adopting us as children, so that we can address God as intimately as Jesus did crying “Abba, Father”. In the Gospel, Jesus commissions his disciples, and us, to share with everyone the Good News of God’s personal love for them. A work and witness we will not have to do alone because Jesus has fulfilled his promise to remain with us by giving us his Spirit. “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to ob-serve all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

S olemnity of the Most Holy Trinity The fundamental dogma, on which everything in Christianity is based, is that of the Blessed Trinity in whose name we are Baptized. The Feast of the Blessed Trinity needs to be un-

derstood and celebrated as a prolongation of the mysteries of Christ and as the sol-emn expression of our faith in this Triune life of the Divine Persons, to which we have been given access by Baptism and by the Redemption won for us by Christ. On Trinity Sunday we remember and honor the belief of an eternal God, consisting of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Pope Gregory IX instituted Trinity Sunday in 828 AD. This day is notable for being the only major Christian festival that celebrates a doctrine of the church rather than an event in its sacred history. It falls on the Sun-day following Pentecost each year. The belief of one God in three persons is a distinc-tive of the Christian faith but the early church was plagued by contrary views. Trinity Sunday spread throughout the western church around the 14th century. The ordinal Sundays following Trinity Sunday are focused on Christian growth and discipleship after a long period of emphasis on the life and ministry of Jesus. The liturgical color is white. Images of the Trinity depict that there are three persons in one God. The Trinity is sometimes symbolized by a triangular shape formed by three overlapping oval rings or loops, each featuring one of the following images: the crown (Father) within the top loop; the lamb (Son) within the second loop and the dove (Spirit) within the third loop.

Other shapes depicting the Trinity include Borromean rings and the triquetra. The Borromean rings feature three overlapping round circles forming a triangular shape and in the center, inside all the circles is the word "unitas". The Borromean rings are named after the crest of the Borromeo family in 15th-century Tuscany. The triquetra symbol uses shapes similar to one of the oldest Christian symbols. In the triquetra, the three equal arches of the circle express the equality of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The union of the arches represents the unity of the Godhead. Their continuous form symbolizes eternity. Their interwoven appearance denotes the indivisibility of the Trinity. In the center of the triquetra is an equilateral triangle, one of the most ancient Trini-ty symbols and each pair of arches formed an ellipse, the symbol of God’s glory.

C elebrated on May 31st this Feast recalls the visit of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth as recorded in the Gospel of St. Luke 1:39-56. It

is the second mystery of the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary. Mary is pregnant with Jesus and Elizabeth is pregnant with John the Baptist. Mary left Nazareth immediately after the Annunciation and went “to the hill country...to a town of Judah”(1:39) to attend to her cousin Elizabeth. “When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.” (1:41-42)
