Thank youThank you so much to everyone who has sent cards, flowers,(chocolate!) and messages for me both before and after myrecent operation. I am very well at present (awaiting results) andsincerely appreciate everyone’s concern.
My experience has been a wake up call for many other womenthat I know and I feel that I must say that it really emphasises theabsolute necessity for our use of the NHS Breast Screeningservice. We all think that we check ourselves regularly andbelieve that we will report any other symptoms too, but it is alltoo easy to put off ‘bothering’ our doctor or to self diagnose withGoogle. I could not feel my tumour and had decided that a smallchange in appearance was not significant, so without amammogram would still be ignorant of a stage 2-3 cancer. Also,if you are over 70 you will not be called for screening, eventhough you are more likely to get cancer than youngerpeople, you are entitled to attend screening but it is up to you torequest it. Once again my experience has resulted in several ofmy older friends and relatives finding out that their lastscreening was much more than three years ago. I urge everyoneto take responsibility for their own health, take time to checkyourself and don’t rely solely on automatic reminders becauseone day they may not come and if you are a man, it is entirely upto you whatever your age. Thank you again everyone and GodBless us all! Lesley Booker

WEEK ST MARY BONAVENTURES WINovember Meeting Report
It wasn't a case of "Cider with Rosie" but cider with RobMeredith, plus a selection of his Heritage apples. Rob camealong as our guest speaker and both entertained andeducated us as to the enormous range of English apples stillgrown in this country and many of which hark back toVictorian times, such as Blenheim Orange, Ribston Pippin andthe Cornish Gilly Flower.
In times past, different varieties of apples grew each seasonin this country, so we'd have a natural selection to choosefrom throughout the year.Rob informed us that most commercial orchards have longgone, so we now import fruit from abroad from countriessuch as South Africa, New Zealand and Chile. Once upon atime we could choose from many of the 5,000 recorded typesof apples once grown in our own country and in fact, theWest Country has ideal weather for producing great fruit.
There has been a resurgence in old varieties and Rosemoreand Cotehele are planting new heritage orchards to saveancient examples such as Pendragon and the CornishHoneypinnick and will be holding "Apple Day Festivals" tocelebrate their work.
Rob has his own orchard where he has planted 50 trees overthe years. He and his wife also made, and sold, apple juiceand cider from their fruit but now produce just enough fortheir own consumption. He painted a rather lovely, tranquil country setting when de-scribing his orchard, complete with hens freely roaming be-neath the branches which are full of beautifully scented blos-som in the spring.

News from the ChapelThe November ‘Rendezvous’ cafe style service was led byPeter Daniel on the theme of ‘Looking back, looking forward’and included a song from the musical War Horse which was aSankey hymn, a quiz, a sketch based around Jesus telling thedisciples to fish on the other side of the boat, and a shortmessage about trying new things.Worship Lunch on 27th October was well attended as usual. It included a service of worship at tables, led by JeremyWard, followed by a two course roast lunch. On the 3rd
November, Peter Parsons talked about the writings of C SLewis at our evening Cafe Church, and certainly inspired atleast two people to go out and buy some of his books!Stratton Young Farmers have again elected to hold theirannual Carol service at Week St Mary, at 7.30pm on the 18th
December. This is a fairly informal service, is open to all andis usually well attended by villagers as well as the YoungFarmers. On the 22nd December Bright Sparks, the children’s musicand drama group, will be leading the morning service at10.30am. It will feature a drama called ‘Four leggedChristmas’, looking at the Christmas story from the point ofview of the animals involved, together with a number ofmodern Christmas songs. In the evening there will be atraditional candlelit Carol service. Bright Sparks are alsorehearsing for ‘The Wizard of Oz’, to be performed on 8th and9th February 2020.

Community Shop Volunteers MeetingsFollowing the success of the spring volunteers meeting at
Box Tree House, the shop Management committee thoughtthat shop volunteers may appreciate a regular opportunity toget together to hear about new things happening in the shop
that they need to know about and to feed back any newideas and comments that they might want to share.
These sessions will be run by Committee Members Lesleyand Louise. They will report back to the Management
Committee who will further discuss any matters that arebrought up and then pass on appropriate suggestions to the
Shop Managers for their consideration. We plan to have the first meeting at The Cottage, Week
Green on Tuesday 3rd September at 7 pm and the next oneon 10th December. All volunteers will be welcome and anychanges to this plan will be notified by email and a notice on
the volunteers’ rota board in the shop.
The Magazine Teamwould like to wishALL of our readers
near and far the very bestMerry Christmas
and aVERY Happy New Year

Rob and other volunteers are responsible for the planting ofthe Community Apple Orchard in Bude at Neetside wherewild flowers have also been grown and are enjoyed by allwho have seen them.We were fortunate enough to sample slices of the fruit thatRob had with him on the night and each had its own particu-lar taste, with some sweeter than others, but all compli-mented the cheeses, biscuits and glasses of cider we also en-joyed on the night."Pomology" is the name given to the science of growing fruit.Perhaps one I could actually get my teeth into!
This month's meeting is a social gathering with-out a scheduled guest speaker, held in the WSMMSR on Thursday 12th.Doors open at 7pm.

We look forward to welcoming regularguests and new.
Christmas Tree on the SquareFor around ten years the Parish Council has organised the
lighting of a Christmas tree on the square on the firstSaturday in December.
Firstly, we decorated trees that had been donated andplanted and in the last three years a cut tree. It has beendifficult in December gales to keep a tree upright and tidyuntil Christmas and whilst it has been largely valued it has
not been universally popular for a variety of reasons. We have decided not to put up a tree this year.
If any organisation has a burning desire to take it on, pleaselet us know but we tend to feel a break of a few years would
enable the initiative to come back reinvigorated inthe future.
We would like to thank the donors of the two planted treesthat unfortunately, did not survive the site conditions, the
Parish Church and Chapel who alternately organisedrefreshments and carol singing and Phil and Hilary Dorren
who have generously supplied the electricity.
