Weekly Message from Deacon Rob on the Sunday Readings

A note from Deacon Rob: This week’s message is

based on the readings for the 7th Sunday of Easter

rather than on the Ascension readings as I purposeful-

ly wanted this message to prepare us for the feast of

Pentecost, next Sunday.

As baptized Christians, we are all called to be

witnesses, martyoi, of the Lord. This calling requires us

to pattern our lives after the One who was sent by God

to restore order to creation and bring mankind back to

his original state. To this end, Christians are

determined to martyr themselves by sacrificing the

way of the world for the life of agape – sacrificial love.

To be filled with this type of love, Christians must be

filled with the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, promised by

Christ. Today’s readings relate the history of this

calling from the death of the first Christian martyr,

Stephen, to culmination described in the Book of

Revelation.

The first reading from the Acts of the Apostles reveals

how the deacon, Stephen, meets his martyrdom.

Clearly stating that Stephen is filled with the Holy

Spirit, today’s account reveal how this Christian

deacon not only testifies to the Truth of the Gospel

before the Jews but he, also, patterns his life after that

of the Lord. Acts relates that Stephen boldly accuses

the Jewish crowd of unfaithfulness and resistance to

the Spirit. Seeing a Heavenly vision, the deacon

describes his vision which enrages the populace even

more. They drive him out and stone him; thus, allowing

him the privilege of pattern his death after the Lord’s

by asking forgiveness for his murders with a final

request for Jesus to receive his spirit. Thus, through

the power of the Advocate, the early Church produces

her first martyr who has given all for the Lord.

In the second reading from the Book of Revelation the

final desire of all Christians expressed – the Coming of

Christ, along with the establishment of the triumphal

kingdom. In John’s vision, Jesus speaks identifying

himself as the “Alpha and Omega” – the beginning and

the end. This statement reveals the Divine Intention

that all was created for Him and all exists through Him

and in Him. Christ is the Divine Source after which all

Christians are called to pattern their lives. Jesus

affirms His role as the morning star and as the long-

awaited descendent of David. The prognostication by

John affirms for all Christians who are guided by the

Spirit that Jesus will return soon and that His followers

should hold fast to their faith despite the threats and

enticements from the world. This witnessing will entail

the work of the Spirit as the early Church undergoes a

persecution that threatens their very existence.

Today’s Gospel reveals the final desire of Jesus. Christ

expresses a desire that His followers experience a

unity like He has with His Father. This prayer has

several dimensions affixed to it. First, the Lord wishes

that the disciples themselves remain united with each

other. Knowing the future problems that His Church

will experience, Jesus prays that their unity not be

destroyed and that they continue to spread the Gospel

to the ends of the Earth – bringing redemption to all.

Secondly, Christ prays that their unity unites them with

the Divine. This unity would allow the ultimate desire of

God to be accomplished – His desire to dwell with his

creation. Christ’s physical absence will be problematic;

however, through the Advocate, the Spirit, the Divine

Mission can continue through their actions and bring

to final fruition the reclamation of Creation. As a result

of this union with the Trinity, the newly founded Faith

will stand as an example to the already fractured world

of the agape love of Christ.

So, Holy Mother the Church desires us to focus on the

Will of Christ reflected in His prayer to the Father. As

we prepare to celebrate Pentecost, next week’s

Solemnity, the Church reminds us to accept the future

God has in store with the same faith that Our Savior

had. Holy Mother the Church tells us that the road will

be filled with obstacles and distractions. Like the early

Christians, we will be tested and asked to choose

between the Kingdom and the World; however, the

Advocate will be always be present and guide our

responses. We only have to listen to the Word and

follow His calling. If we do and are willing to be

martyoi, we are assured union with the Divine and final

victory in the end. Come, Holy Spirit, come!

SAINTS OF THE MONTH:

St. BONIFACE JUNE 5

St Boniface was an English Benedictine monk

who chose to devote his life to the conversion

of the Germanic tribes in the eighth century.

Paganism was the way of life among the tribes.

The pope was able to get a letter of safe

conduct for him from Charles Martel, a

powerful Frankish ruler and grandfather to

Charlemagne. St. Boniface was made regional

bishop and began organizing the whole

German church. He established many houses of

prayer which took the form of Benedictine monasteries. During a

mission of preparing converts for Confirmation, he and 53

companions were massacred. St. Boniface lived the Christian rule: to

follow Christ is to follow the way of the cross, in this case to heal the

household of faith.
