Saint JOHN BOSCO
January 31
Born on 1815 on the island of Sardinia, Italy, Saint John's theory of education combined catechetical training and fatherly guidance, seeking to unite the spiritual life with one's work, study and play. His service to young people started when he met a poor orphan in Turin and he taught him in this way, drawing other young boys also. He was ordained a priest and opened the Oratory of St. Francis de Sales, an institution for boys that had its’ own printing press, publishing religious and catechetical pamphlets. St. John's preaching fame spread and his apprentices banded together beginning the order of the Salesians in 1859. Their activity concentrated, as it does today, on education and mission work. Later, he organized a group of Salesian Sisters for girls. For St. John, being a Christian was a full time effort, searching and finding God in everything we do, letting His love lead us.

Weekly Message on the Readings for the 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today, following the recognition by John the Baptist of Jesus as the Messiah and “Lamb of God”, Jesus journeys and selects his apostles, leaders of the new “Twelve Tribes.” The apostles are different from the Lord’s disciples. Disciples, people who follow the teachings of the Lord, lack the specifically appointed mission of “being sent.” Thus, Paul, who was originally chosen by Jesus, later claims he is an “apostle” because the Lord sends him to the Gentiles. As apostles, Jesus sends and commissions his apostles to spread the Good News. Whether disciples or apostles, all are called to be children of God and heirs of His kingdom. This “Lamb of God” will inaugurate the New Creation with the establishment of his apostles as the foundation for his Church.
This reconstitution of Israel is discovered in the first reading of today. The prophet Isaiah depicts the fall of the Northern Tribes to the Assyrians but also professes a time of reclamation when God will restore what was lost. This reversal will take place under the auspices of the Anointed One who will bring the Glory of God and His Light to fill the darkness of the land. This particular passage indicates the inclusion of Gentiles in this new kingdom or New Israel, which early Christians believed was accomplished in Jesus. Since the Messiah was predicted in numerous cultures, the apostolic message from the apostles and followers of Christ, his disciples, was readily accepted.
This acceptance is found in the second reading from St. Paul to the Corinthians. Corinth, a hot-bed of pagan rituals, was a site that received numerous missionaries. Being in the crossroads of the ancient world made Corinth a prime target for evangelization. In today’s reading, the effect of this proselyting was the formation of various groups claiming to have received the “true” message from various preachers. Each sub-group claimed to have more authority than the others. Paul puts a stop to this fractioning of Christianity by reminding all that Christ is the crucified One and He is the One to follow. Paul’s message is clear. It is the Light of Christ that Christians are to follow and only Christ is the head. The individual claims of others to be the true faith is only a claim for individual glory which is contrary to the Gospel. These arguments are the tools of Satan who uses hubris, excessive pride, to destroy the true message of God who humbled Himself as an example for us to follow. Paul’s intent is to crush man’s divisiveness through pride and substitute the humility of Christ for unity.
Finally, today’s Gospel by Matthew poignantly refers to
Isaiah’s prophecy to affirm Jesus as the Messiah. Due to many others claims, especially the emperors, for that title, Matthew attaches Biblical proof that Jesus is the One. Why does Matthew mention this prophecy during this period of Jesus’ life? There are three reasons. First, the prophecy dealt with the exodus of ten of the twelve tribes after their Assyrian defeat and their diaspora. This destruction and scattering were prominent in the minds of the
Jews. The fact that the Messiah would reconstitute the twelve tribes for the new Exodus went without saying. It is not surprising, then, that Jesus would begin selecting his twelve Apostles within this region to form the new “Tribes”. These apostles would be the leaders of the tribes of the New Israel that would be constituted of both Gentiles and Jews. Secondly, to fulfill Isaiah’s prophecy, Christ’s presence and light had to start in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. This region of Judea had become a hotbed due to John’s arrest and execution. It was appropriate that the Light for all would start in the region where preparation for the Lord’s Way had begun. In addition, the region chosen by Jesus was greatly populated with Gentiles and all prophecies had indicated that the Messiah would be a great light to all nations. Thus, appropriately, the Light would begin to dispel the Darkness in a region where turmoil was prominent. Clearly, Jesus saw that his ministry was to establish the kingdom for all and his reconstitution of the twelve tribes along with the New Exile would begin in the North.
As we begin our journey with Christ, once again, to His cross and resurrection, the memories and signs that He gave remind us of our calling as his apostles and disciples in our age. Just as Jesus drew others to him, we, too, are called to witness to the Kingdom of God and draw others to Christ, the Light. We must remind ourselves that we have been called and sent by the Lord to preach to those lost in our world. This evangelization must take place through our actions and our words. We must proclaim the Gospel to all we encounter so that the fulfillment of God’s salvific plan is accomplished. Like Christ, our mission may not be easy. We will encounter resistance, plots, and people that are determined to stop us and crucify us in our efforts; however, we must remember that our faith in the Father and in the promise of Christ will bring ultimate victory. For as Jesus said, “…you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and gates of Hades will not prevail against it….”
