WEEK OF 11TH NOVEMBER 2018

SUNDAY INTRODUCTIONS

First Reading 1 Kings 17:1-16

Elijah was a real historical figure, who lived in the ninth century BC and was significant in his day. As often happens, legendary stories are used to capture the power and importance of the heroes of old. What do you think the writer is trying to get across?

Second Reading Hebrews 9:24-28

What is the meaning of Jesus’ death on

the cross? The writer of Hebrews con-trasts the repeated sacrifices of the Temple with the once-and-for-all offer-ing of Jesus’ faithfulness.

Gospel Mark 12:38-44

In this culture, to be a widow meant to be without support and protection, very poor and vulnerable. And yet, this is precisely the figure Jesus picks out for special praise and commendation. Thought for the day Money can easily distort our attitudes and values. It is tempting to react more warmly to those who give more generously—we all do it. It is easy to overlook the motive behind giving and focus, not on the giver, but on the gift. We do have the expression that it’s

the thought that counts. Usually, though, such proverbial wisdom is employed to help me/us be consoled when some expectation was not real-ised. Thus, this apparently consolatory thought acknowledges the tendency to the opposite, the attraction to the gift as such!! The Lord, however, reads our hearts.

Fifth National Collection for the World Meeting of Families

While I am acutely conscious of the many financial demands facing families and parishes at this time, your support for this collection on November 10th/11th would be greatly appreciated.

The overall cost to the Church in Ireland for hosting the World Meeting came to €19.4m and to date €15.4m has been raised by way of local church collections and other donations. However a deficit of €4m remains.

Pope Francis presided over wonderful events in Dublin and in Knock—The Festival of Families and the final Mass in Croke Park. He visited the Capu-chin Day Centre, the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes and presided over an inspiring event in the Pro-Cathedral. He also met with survivors of abuse and above all he came to encourage the gift and fruits of faith in family life.

Here in Dublin this collection will replace the normal second collection for Share. +Diarmuid Martin Archbishop of Dublin

THE DEEP END: The Widow ’s Mi te

In today’s Gospel, Jesus is courageously speaking out against the hypocrisy of the reli-gious leaders of his time. He is encouraging all his followers to engage in a reality check. The hypocrisy of the scribes is in total contrast to the humility and generosity of the widow in the second part of the Gospel. She gives not of what she has to spare, but everything she has. She is freer than the others. We can be quick to make judgements about anoth-er person’s commitment based on what we see happening on the outside. Those leaders who acquire the best seats and show up in all the frills may not actually be all they appear to be.

Jesus is urging us to look into the person’s heart for what is there is far more important than all the trappings on the outside. The widow gives everything and this does not have to be about money. We might recall those today who give us their time, their support, who pray from the heart and give of themselves expecting nothing in return. We might thank them, pray for them. We can also look into our own hearts today and challenge our moti-vations for what we do. Can we give more of ourselves to God or to someone we love? A listening ear, ‘wasting time’ with people, looking at how we spend our money. Jesus calls us to search our hearts and the hearts of others in today’s gospel. The widow models Jesus’ way of discipleship in contrast to the those in positions of leadership and power.

November Altar List of the Dead

Envelopes are available at all church doors

Apostolic Workgroup

Apostolic Work provides Mass kits to priests in poor parishes in developing countries. The kit includes vestments, alter linens, chalice and ciborium in a light metal box for travel.

If you would like to consider subscribing to a Mass kit or helping with a donation of any sort please contact the Parish Office.

Each Mass kit can be dedicated to the memory of a loved one with an engraving on the chalice so they are continually remembered in Mass. A donation of €350 will cover the cost of a complete Mass kit and a simple inscription. We would also welcome anyone interested in becoming a sewing member of the group.

Members of the group will be displaying the kits in Holy Cross on the weekend of November 17th/18th if you would like to see what’s involved.

“A church child safeguarding policy has three aims: a recognition of the darkness, a search for renewed hope, and an awareness that the work of safeguarding and the work

Archbishop Diarmuid Martin at the National Safeguarding Conference, Kilkenny this week. Many thanks to all those who have completed their Gard Vetting forms where rele-vant. It is Parish Policy that all those involved in Ministry are correctly vetted.

November is our month of Remembrance & Prayer

WE REMEMBER THEM

From Gates of Prayer, Reform Judaism Prayerbook In the rising of the sun and its going down,

We remember them;

In the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter,

We remember them;

In the opening of the buds and in the warmth of summer,

We remember them;

In the rustling of the leaves and the beauty of autumn,

We remember them;

In the beginning of the year and when it ends,

We remember them;

When we are weary and In need of strength,

We remember them;

When we are lost and sick at heart,

We remember them;

When we have joys we yearn to share,

We remember them;

So long as we live, they too shall live

For they are now part of us as

WE REMEMBER THEM

The Dublin diocesan social support

agency Crosscare has taken charge

of the Skoda Rapid saloon car that

was used by Pope Francis during

his visit to the World Meeting of Families in Dublin in August.

The saloon was handed over to

Crosscare chief executive Conor Hickey by Skoda manager Cathal

Kelly on Friday. The vehicle was

donated to the charity to help its

work with homeless families.
