Parent Teacher Interviews

Many teachers have sent out invitations for our parent teacher

interviews. This is a time where you get to hear firsthand about the

learning, goals and growth of your child. It is also a chance where

you get to have input about your child as a learner, after getting to

be a part of this during the ‘Learning at home’ period.

It is also an opportunity to strengthen partnerships with your child’s

class teacher. We will be using the online booking system again to

allow parents to select a time that suits them best. If you have

missed the communication about your parent teacher interviews,

please contact your child’s class teacher.

Teachers and parents share a common goal at parent teacher

interviews: ensuring that students succeed. To ensure you make

the most of your time with the class teacher, remember the “BE

HEARD” principles:

One Word Can Make Such A Difference

Do you know the power of ‘Yet’? You may also have heard the

phrase ‘a growth mindset’. Let me you provide a short synopsis of

this concept.

Yet is a tiny word with potentially big potential to motivate. It can

change your outlook from having a fixed mindset in relation to your

own potential to one of a growth mindset. Compare the example “I

am not good at reading” to “I am not good at reading….. Yet”. It

can turn pessimism into optimism and it can change negativity into

hope. With the power of ‘yet’, you can embrace challenges and

take ownership of improving, learning and growing from an

experience.

The key principle is that if you want to get better at something, it

takes effort. “I’m not great at golf…Yet.” I know if I want to get

better, I need to take lessons and practice, practice and practice. It

is unlikely I would ever be able to become a professional golfer, but

I know I can improve if I want to put in the effort.

How we interpret challenges, setbacks, and criticism is a choice.

We can interpret them in a fixed mindset as signs that our talents

are fixed and non-malleable. Or we can interpret them in a growth

mindset as signs that we need to increase effort or try a new

strategy and choose stretch over easy. Positive self talk and belief

is a key ingredient for being able to take on challenges and

overcome setbacks. Self talk also has an impact on our wellbeing

and of course, our mindset.

Think of the potential:

“I’m not great at drawing…Yet”

“I don’t know how to write code…Yet”

“I don’t know much about this growth mindset stuff…Yet”

On Friday, 4 September 2020, (Week 8) there will be a PUPIL FREE DAY.

Students do not come to school on this day, however OSHC will be operating as

normal from 7:00am until 6:00pm.

Changes to Bus Services

Brisbane Bus Lines changes came into effect this morning, Wednesday 26 August 2020. Please see further in the newsletter for all

changes and more information should these changes affect your family. If you live on or near the bus route, why not consider catching the

bus to school if you don’t already. A great way to avoid the traffic at school drop off and pick up times!

Father’s Day Stall

A reminder that the Father’s Day stall will be held tomorrow morning, Thursday 27 August 2020 from 8:30am, outside the Library

in the back undercover area (oval side). You can pre-pay an amount on QKR (up until 11:00pm tonight) and your child will be issued a

voucher to spend on a gift. Otherwise children can bring cash tomorrow (up to $10). There are lots of gifts to choose from!

Another reminder that school photos will be taking place in Week 10, on Wednesday 16 and

Thursday 17 September. If you haven ’t already ordered your photos online, please go to

photos, these can also be ordered online or via a sibling envelope at the front desk.

lovely presents to choose from for their special Dad/Stepdad/Grandad/

carer!

Thank You!

Thank you to all the class Parent Reps who met last week to

discuss the topics currently on your mind. We held two meetings,

one in the morning and one in the afternoon, both having great

discussion.

Parent reps should have now emailed you the important points

gained from the meeting. Thank you to our School Council Chair

Amanda Holding for skyping into our morning meeting, and for our

School Council Secretary, Felicity Magee, for attending our

afternoon meeting. Amanda and Felicity shared with us exciting

information about the 4 year Strategic Plan roll-out.

What does it mean to be a good citizen?

Good citizens make our world safer, more equitable and more compassionate places to live.

Citizenship is one of our school values and essentially is about making our world a better place to

live. Being a good citizen means being socially aware, making responsible choices and positively

contributing to your community.

From our youngest Prep students to our graduating Year 6’s, we strive to empower all students as

citizens of their local community and of the wider global community.

3 Ways to Encourage Good Citizenship

Know thy impact

Good citizens make the connections between their own actions and its impact on other people and the environment. Being

aware of how your decisions have an impact is an important first step in citizenship. This can range from understanding the

consequences of littering to reflecting on where the family might spend their holidays.

Empathy for others

As humans we like to categorize ourselves into groups. We each belong to many different groups and these groups can be

helpful to boost our sense of belonging. However being able to recognize the similarities rather than the differences you share

with other groups is an important part of building empathy. Our best citizens are people who can put themselves in the shoes of

someone else and work towards making a positive difference.

Critical thinking skills

Good citizens seek to solve problems or find better alternatives. To do this they require critical thinking skills. Not all information is

trustworthy and some sources of information or messages are intended to mislead or confuse people. Critical thinkers evaluate

information and ideas carefully to make their own reasoned judgments.

Road Safety Week

Help Keep Our Roads Safe In Samford

This week is Queensland Road Safety Week, running from Monday 24 until Friday 28 August 2020.

It is an important reminder that when we’re behind the wheel, driving safely should be our number

one priority. Did you know that half of all serious crashes in Queensland are a result of dangerous

habits such as not giving way, running red lights and tailgating?

The Fatal 5 (speeding, mobile phone distraction, drink driving, fatigue and not wearing a seatbelt)

also contributed to over one third of serious crashes where people were seriously injured or lost their

life, from 2014 to 2018.

What can we do? Let’s show our support by kicking those bad driving habits and make our roads a

‘The 5 Secrets to High School’ presentation

On Monday, 7 September 2020, we are privileged to have Bec Sparrow attend Samford State School to give her ‘5 Secrets to High

School’ presentation to our Year 6 cohort. As our senior students are getting ready to begin their journey into high school and navigate

their tween years, this session will give them helpful strategies to guide them through this time.

The 5 Secrets to High School

Is whether or not you enjoy high school based on luck? Or can you actively make choices and decisions which will greatly improve your

chances of having a positive experience? In this talk, I go through the five things students can do to have a more positive experience in

high school. From choosing supportive friends and avoiding drama cyclones to allowing yourself to be ‘seen’ … this talk is especially

useful for students in Year 6.

Bec Sparrow will help students understand:

The importance of finding true friends who share you values and bring out your best.

The need to be resilient and how to teach yourself to be more resilient.

Why it's crucial to work out your values and what you stand for.

Understanding the destructive nature of gossip and how to avoid drama cyclones.

The benefit of allowing yourself to be 'seen' by your school and the benefits of joining in and being part of the school community.

Over the past 26 years Rebecca Sparrow has earned a living as a travel writer, a television publicist, a

marketing executive, a magazine editor, a TV scriptwriter, a radio producer, a newspaper columnist and as

an author. She is the author of three best-selling novel. Since 2009 Rebecca has focused on writing non-

fiction books for teenagers to help them navigate those tricky high school years.

Do You Have A Story?

Australian author, Gina Dawson, is seeking help from the Samford

and surrounding communities in relation to her new book project.

She is in the early stages of creating a book of true stories about

Wellbeing, Therapy, Assistance and other kinds of Working Dogs,

and how they have changed people’s lives.

Do you have an inspirational story about how a Wellbeing, Therapy

or Assistance Dog has changed a life? If so, Gina would love to

hear from you. Likewise, if you know of someone with a Working

Dog and has a story to tell, please contact Gina by email at

Gina has published seven books, three of which aim to educate

children about the wonderful work of Assistance and Therapy Dogs

Design Thinking Process

This week students participated in their second workshop with

Michael from STEMPunks. Their task has been to develop Samford

State School’s own ‘Design Thinking Process’ for the new

Makerspace.

Students applied STEM skills in Coding, Sensors, Electronics, 3D

Design and Art to create interactive billboards representing their

Design Thinking process. A great mix of creativity and innovation!

Game Time!

As a group, the children and an educator discussed how they could make a new board game. After some

brainstorming the children came up with a number of options – educator monopoly (all the educators’ faces on

the board), memory game (with pictures of each child, favourite food etc.), and then our final choice ‘Smap’.

The children chose to create and play the game called – SMAP. It is a fusion of snap and memory.

The rules for ‘Smap’ are as follows –

1. Lay all cards upside down.

2. One person selects a card and turns it over.

3. The next person picks up the second card and turns it over.

4. If there is a match, the first person to touch the card wins that hand.

5. The game continues until all cards are matched.

6. Whoever has the most cards at the end wins.

So the children began drawing pictures on the paper. From here, we photocopied the drawings to create a pair and then laminated them.

Then it was time to begin our game.

Spread a little kindness

In Term 1, we introduced a new section into the newsletter called the ‘Attitude of Gratitude’. We asked you to share what you are grateful

for. It was fabulous to see lots of parents emailing through with words of kindness and support. These messages of appreciation were

shared anonymously in the newsletter and created a boost of energy and positivity among our school community.

We are hoping to make these gratitude shout outs a regular feature of our school newsletter. So if you find yourself thinking... wow, I’m

grateful for (you fill in the blanks here…..!), please make the time to share your gratitude so we can all appreciate it together. You can do

this by emailing gratitude@samfordss.eq.edu.au. Your message of gratitude will then appear anonymously in the Iron Bark Press.

The practice of sharing messages of gratitude is something that the staff at Samford have been doing for the past several years. We have

built a culture of gratitude by taking the time each week to put into words the people, places and things we are grateful for. While reading a

message of appreciation is uplifting, it can feel even more rewarding to send out a message of gratitude for someone else. So do yourself

a favour and take a moment to put into words what you are grateful for.

Samford Kindergarten Tours

It is the time of year when we would generally open our kindy for future and prospective families, to visit and meet staff and ask questions

in relation to their child’s attendance at Samford Community Kindergarten.

Unfortunately this year we are unable to host an Open Day as we have done in the past, however, we are currently offering private

tours of the kindy on Friday 28 August, Monday 7 September and Friday 11 September, 2020.

If you have not been through our kindy before or have not attended during the last few years, we would like to offer you an opportunity to

visit during a normal day and see first hand the benefits our kindy can offer your family. These visits will be a duration of half an hour

maximum and allow you to meet the staff and possibly speak to a current parent about their experience. If you are interested in booking a

visit, please call or email Claudine to arrange a suitable time.

Competitions Details: Entries must be handed in to the Library by Friday 4 September 2020 Entries must be clearly labelled with:

your name your class the name of your Curious Creature

You can create your model out of whatever materials you like e.g. cardboard, clay, Lego, paper-mache, etc. Models should be no larger than 50cm x 50cm. The competition is open to all Samford SS families. One entry per student.

The Moreton Bay Region Youth Art Awards are open to residents of the Moreton Bay Region who are of school age or children attending schools in the region. The competition is divided into two categories, 2D and 3D works, and entries are grouped by school grade level. The awards are open to individual entrants and collaborative school entries. Prize money and trophies are awarded to winning entries in each grade level and art category, while trophies and certificates are awarded to place getters. If your child is interested in entering this competition, find out more on the Youth Art Awards page.

Nominate a Year 6 student

who is making a difference in their community

The Fred Hollows Foundation is calling for nominations for the Fred

Hollows Humanity Award, which recognises Year 6 students who

demonstrate compassion, integrity and kindness towards others.

Parents, teachers, principals and community members around the

country can nominate a child in Year 6 who is making a difference at

the Fred Hollows website before COB Friday 11 September.

A Junior Ambassador from Queensland will be recognised and

extend their humanity by allocating $5,000, thanks to Specsavers, to

one of The Foundation’s programs to end avoidable blindness.

To support the return to play, Sport and Recreation have opened a new round of FairPlay vouchers.

FairPlay assists families by providing vouchers of up to $150 to eligible Queensland kids towards sport and active recreation membership, registration and participation fees.

The program is open to Department of Human Services Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card holders with children aged 5 to 17 years.
