WHAT DOES AN EMPLOYER EXPECT?10 work ethic traits:

• Appearance: Displays proper dress, grooming, hygiene, and manners.

• Attendance: Attends class, arrives and leaves on time, tells instructor in advance of planned absences, and makes up assignment promptly.

• Attitude: Shows a positive attitude, appears confident and has true hopes of self.

• Character: Displays loyalty, honesty, dependability, reliability, initiative, and self-control.

• Communication: Displays proper verbal and non-verbal skills and listens.

• Cooperation: Displays leadership skills; properly handles criticism, conflicts, and stress; maintains proper relationships with peers and follows chain of command.

• Organizational Skill: Shows skills in management, prioritizing, and dealing with change.

• Productivity: Follows safety practices, conserves resources, and follows instructions.

• Respect: Deals properly with diversity, shows understanding and tolerance.

BAD WORK ETHIC

An attitude that an employee demonstrates that

shows a lack of ambition and professionalism in the

workplace.

• Examples include:

1. Constantly absent or late

2. Taking credit for other’s work.

3. Using cellphones or text messaging in mid-

conversation or in a meeting.

4. Mocking race, gender, age, disabilities, sexual

orientation or religion

5. Behaving aggressively or bullying others.

6. Spending time avoiding work rather than doing it

A strong work ethic within the company serves as a behavioral model for the right way of working. It supports and fosters a productive working culture.

Employees with a strong work ethic are highly driven and often far exceed their peers in terms of achieving company goals.

WHAT IS BUSINESS ETHICS

• Business ethics is the behavior that a business adheres to in its daily dealings with

the world. The ethics of a particular business can be diverse. They apply not only to

how the business interacts with the world at large, but also to their one-on-one

dealings with staff and customers.

• A code of conduct defines how a company’s

employees should act on a day-to-day basis. It

reflects the organization’s daily operations, core

values and overall company culture. As a result,

every code of conduct is unique to the

organization it represents.

RESOLVING ETHICAL DILEMMAS AND MAKING ETHICAL DECISIONS

• An ethical dilemma is a problem in the decision-making process between two possibleoptions, neither of which is absolutely acceptable from an ethical perspective. Although weface many ethical and moral problems in our lives, most of them come with relativelystraightforward solutions. Ethical dilemmas are especially significant in professional life, asthey frequently occur in the workplace.

• Some examples of ethical dilemma examples include:

• Taking credit for others’ work

• Offering a client a worse product for your own profit

• Utilizing inside knowledge for your own profit

• Extended breaks

• Sexual Harassment/ Verbal Abuse/ Violene

• Threats

• Dishonesty

• Debate Moral Choices

• Use ethical reasoning to resolve the dilemma. Evaluate the rights of each party and your obligations to them. Treat each party fairly in resolving the dilemma. Weigh the costs and benefits of alternatives.

Exactly what is a professional image? Is it how youdress? Your grooming? The quality or cost of yourclothing? What creates an individual’s professionalimage?

“Your professional image is the image you project inthe professional business world.”

Professional image consists of personal appearancewith regard to clothing, grooming, manners andetiquette, personal behavior, and communicationeffectiveness.

The four main attributes of a professional image include:

• • Appropriate professional appearance.

• • Use of correct manners and etiquette.

• • Appropriate personal behavior.

• • Effective communications

Manners and Etiquette.

Your professional image is also communicated through your use of appropriate manners and

etiquette.

You should be familiar with the different protocols of behavior as they relate to social

manners and etiquette.

Some of these include:

• Making introductions and appropriate greetings.

• Being able to initiate and maintain conversations.

• Respecting the customs of others.

• Being able to express appreciation.

• Knowing appropriate dining rules and protocol.

• Extending courteous behavior to others.

• Knowing how to behave in difficult situations.

The importance and significance of a professional image should

not be underestimated. “The way you look may not make up for poor

performance, but it could give you a competitive edge
