Week 8 Term 2, 2019
MEALS ON WHEELS Charli and Phoebe joined Mrs Druitt to deliver Meals on Wheels to members of the Denman community on Monday morning. Every month our student leaders volunteer their time to assist the Denman Hospital Auxiliary with this fantastic community program. This week infants students created some beautiful artworks to deliver to residents. While they were out in the community, the girls dropped in to see Mrs Towler at the Denman Multi Purpose Service to pass on some of the artwork to our friends at DMPS.

SPELLING BEE Parents and community members visited DPS on Tuesday to watch our super spellers in action at the 2019 Spelling Bee finals. Students displayed great confidence and knowledge throughout the finals. Stage 1 was a tightly contested competition. Mrs Fuiono almost ran out of words for the final two participants after they progressed all the way to Round 10. Stage 2 finalists were tested with some difficult words in the early rounds, but demonstrated great patience to ensure a terrific battle between Year 3 and 4. Year 5 and 6 finalists didn’t disappoint in the last competition of the day. As their families and peers watched on students were challenged by some tricky words including aviary and equitable. Winners and runners up in Stages 2 & 3 will now progress to the Regional Spelling Bee Finals in Term 3.

BEANIES 4 BRAIN CANCER DPS participated in the SRC fundraiser to support Beanies for Brain Cancer Day last Thursday. Students traded their hats for beanies for the day and made a gold coin donation, and/or purchased official Mark Hughes Foundation beanies (MHF). The MHF is a Newcastle charity formed by Mark and Kirralee Hughes following Mark’s diagnosis with Brain Cancer in 2014. The foundation’s mission is to raise much needed funds for research, create awareness and support brain cancer patients and their families. Brain cancer is the leading cause of cancer related deaths in children and adults aged under 40 in Australia!
