•  Aluminium fascia and metal deck roof are angled to allow storm water to flow into box gutter

•  Backing rod is used to fill up the gap between the cavity so it allows the application of the joint sealant

•  Soldier bond brickwork are bricks arranged vertically in a structure

•  Weep holes are required to prevent moisture inside bricks

•  Flashing used to prevent penetration of water through the brick wall

•  Metal deck below box gutter is installed to support the box gutter as metal tray will not be able to withstand the weight of the storm water it carries

Primary structures: Rafter- supports the weight of the roof

Secondary structures:

Bricks- supports load of the fascia and provide enclosure Tertiary structures:

Metal deck under metal box gutter- required to support the weight of storm water as metal tray will not be able to withstand the weight

Where and why things go wrong Many failures in buildings are usually caused by air leakage or water-related elements around the enclosure of a building which leads to condensation and eventually growth of molds. This is why the use of insulation is extremely essential in buildings as it prevents air leakages which causes condensation. Weep holes are also important as they allow moisture to escape to prevent condensation inside bricks.

Sustainability and environmental analysis Bricks are considered to be relatively sustainable as they are:

reusable durable locally produced bricks have little embodied energy no toxic emissions produced during manufacture

However, there have been concerns about the guarantee of quality bricks (Greenspec 2013). Earthwool products are also environmentally friendly because:

it uses a technology which reduces its embodied energy made using recycled glass bottles other materials used are renewable (Knauf Insulation)
