The idea of “Race” and slavery
• TAY: “Captain Thomas Phillips, master of a slave ship in 1694, did not justify his work with any such creed: ‘I can’t think there is any intrinsic value in one color more than another, nor that white is better than black, only we think it so because we are so.’2 For Phillips, the profitability of slavery was the only justification he needed.”• Slavery forced changes in racial ideology, as more Africans were
imported and slavery become permanent and worse, ideas about race necessarily changed as justification

blaming colonists, it is using documents and different perspectives to recognize historical complexity
