SUNDAY 20TH OCTOBER 3pm to 5pm: CHARLOTTE HAWKINS This afternoon, Charlotte’s Young Classical Star is the French pianist Lucas Debargue, who celebrates his 29th birthday later this week.

Debargue began taking his first piano lessons at the age of 11, but stopped when he was 15 as he became more interested in literature. At the age of 17, he undertook a degree in Arts and Literature at Paris Diderot University but quit in 2010 to return to the keyboard.

Upon meeting teacher Rena Chereshevskaya, Debargue decided to focus his energy on becoming a professional musician and prepare for competitions. Five years later, he won fourth prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition and the Special Prize at the Moscow Music Critics’ Association for the musician “whose incredible gift, artist vision and creative freedom have impressed the critics as well as the audience”.

This afternoon, Charlotte showcases Debargue’s new album, released earlier this month, featuring the music of Domenico Scarlatti. 7pm to 9pm: DAVID MELLOR October is Live Music Month on Classic FM and tonight, David Mellor presents the third of four special programmes celebrating the great orchestras of the world, captured live in concert. So far, David has featured the very best of British ensembles and ‘The Big Five’ from America and tonight, he showcases the great orchestras of Germany and Austria with an evening of Austro-German music.

Among the highlights is a live recording of Herbert von Karajan leading the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in Beethoven’s Symphony No.5; Bruckner’s Symphony No.7 performed by Staatskapelle Dresden; and concert recordings from the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. 9pm to 10pm: EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT CLASSICAL MUSIC with CATHERINE BOTT What are the Gramophone Awards – and why are they so prestigious? Tonight, Catherine Bott celebrates one of the highlights of the annual classical music calendar with expert recordings, and an explanation of why they're so important. Catherine begins with a recording of Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty conducted by last year's Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Neeme Järvi. We’ll also hear music recorded by the winners of the 2019 awards, announced last week, alongside powerhouse soprano Lise Davidsen singing music from Wagner’s Tannhäuser and Alison Balsom playing Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto.
