We can use counters to help us add numbers together. Just remember to exchange when you have 10 of any value.

10 ones = 1 ten

10 tens = 1 hundred =

=

Example:

Home tip!You can use different objects instead of counters at home. You could use different coloured lego pieces to represent the different values.10 hundreds = 1

thousands =

Adding MoneyQuestion: £54.00 + £33.00 = £87.00 1. First, line up the numbers accurately so that they are in the

correct place value columns. In this case you need numbers in the ones column and the tens column. There is only pounds, and no pence.

2. Look at the hundredths column. YOU MUST ALWAYS START WITH THE SMALLEST PLACE VALUE COLUMN. There is nothing in the hundredths to add together so the answer is 0. 0 + 0 = 0

3. Then look at the tenths column. Again, there is nothing to add together so the answer is 0

0 + 0 = 0 4. Then look at the ones column and add them together

4 + 3 = 75. Then look at the tens column and add them together.

50 + 30 = 80.6. There was no exchanging involved so the answer is:

£54 + £33 = £87.007. Don’t forget to include the pound sign when you are writing your answer!

Task answers1. £10.00 + £29.00 = £39.002. £44.00 + £21.00 = £65.003. £6.00 + £52.00 = £58.004. £4.00 + £27.00 = £31.005. £15.00 + £64.00 = £79.006. £29.00 + £44.00 = £73.007. £10.00 + £21.00 = £31.008. £52.00 + £64.00 = £116.009. £15.00 + £27.00 = £42.0010. £6.00 + £29.00 = £35.00

Challenge answers1. £10.00 + £29.00 + £44.00 = £83.002. £52.00 + £4.00 + £21.00 = £77.003. £6.00 + £15.00 + £64.00 = £85.00

1. First, line up the numbers accurately so that they are in the correct place value columns. You also need to include a decimal point, as you are now adding pounds and pence.

2. Look at the hundredths column. YOU MUST ALWAYS START WITH THE SMALLEST PLACE VALUE COLUMN.

3. Add the hundredths column together4 + 8 = 12

Place the 2 in the answer box and exchange a 1, as you have 10 left over. This goes to the tenths column.4. Look at the tenths column and add them together. Don’t forget to add the 1, that has been exchanged.

5 + 3 = 8 8 + 1 = 95. LEAVE THE DECIMAL POINT WHERE IT IS!!6. Look at the ones column and add them together

2 + 3 = 57. Then look at the tens column and add them together

30 + 20 = 58. The answer is

£32.54 + £23.38 = £55.929. Don’t forget to include the pound sign when you are writing your answer!
